Special Circuit Judge Forrest Johnson sentenced Greta Brown-Bully to serve ten years in prison but suspended 8 years of the sentence and placed her under house arrest for two years. She pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of panhandler Larry "Caveman" Lee in Hinds County Circuit Court. She is the daughter of Hinds County Constable John Brown.
Manslaughter is a "50% crime." Thus Ms. Bully will probably serve not even a year under house arrest.
Kingfish note: More of the same for Constable John Brown and his thug family.

Is this for real? What a disgrace this city is.
In other words, black-on-black crime is legal.
You mean Jackson is a corrupt cesspool? Imagine that! Color me shocked
You gotta love family and friends.
Brazen special treatment. Yet another disgrace for this state’s judicial system, which is rotten top to bottom.
"She pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of panhandler Larry "Caveman" Lee in Hinds County Circuit Court." She was adamant about her innocence. What happened?
She didn't do it but really did it and now walks for it ? Helluva lawyer she's got .
That’s how pleas work. Both sides give a little even if they are right. A murder trial can be expensive so if you can avoid jail, just plead guilty to the lesser charge. There has to be a lot more to this story that we will never know.
Who was the Judge: Green, Kidd, Wooten or Peterson?
wow. another blessing in hinds county.
and then they wonder why there’s so much violence. duh!
And they are "shooting" for a new record 1:52.
Your racism is on full display here KF. You should never refer to an African American family as “thugs”.
@215 Special Judge Robert Johnson presided. I know reading is hard when all you want to do is bash the sitting judges in Hinds County
KF, the prosecutors aren’t stupid and chose the best option. Despite what you believe, this case was never a slam dunk and getting a Hinds County jury to convict Greta was never going to be an easy task. I do feel bad for Caveman’s family. But considering the local dynamics of the potential jury pool (actual facts be damned) this was the best our DA could hope for. Is this unfair and outrageous to normal Mississippians? Absolutely, but this is Jackson, not Rankin/Madison.
This has little to do with race, even though readers of this blog desperately want it to. This has to do with the scourge of the Mississippi judiciary: cronyism. Insider crap like this happens every day in every court, including the appellate courts.
And yet the DA Jody Owens still pressing a bogus charge against an innocent cop Anthony Fox with absolutely no evidence of guilt
@2:28 It was Judge Forrest Johnson a Special Judge appointed by the Supreme Court.
No time for murder? Where are the protests?
The judge was appointed by the MS Supreme Court for this case. Are the commenters here suggesting that judge and the state Supreme Court are corrupt and blaming that on Jackson/Hinds County? Not seeing much logic on display here, but I must be missing something.
Hey, 5:28. Read the first 5 words of the post. And I wonder why my students have trouble with literacy and comprehension.
@2:28 - you weren’t even able to read the 1st sentence of the post? Pathetic
Caveman probably didn’t deserve to get killed for this infraction but I bet if u add up the offenses…caveman got off light by getting shot.
RIP and I bet the thievery stops around her place.
Isn’t that what the lions share of y’all want? Be able to draw down on a criminal and murderate them with no license required?
If so, done and done.
Hinds County ... A Very Special Place ... to Conduct Criminal Activities!
3:07, et. al.: We don't know at this point what the D.A.'s case looked like, after the Hinds County Constables and the defendant's son finished tampering with the crime scene.
The charges I want to see are against the constables, which include the defendant's fathers, and against her son.
Greta is a successful businesswoman operating in the most difficult environment possible. She should be celebrated, not denigrated. Not sure what your problem is with her and her family KF but you definitely got it out for them.
So Greta overreacted and killed a homeless man. Big effing deal. A productive member of society gets to continue being productive and a welfare leech is removed. This is a win-win for society folks and if you can’t understand that, I can’t help you.
Friends with benefits.
"Your racism is on full display here KF. You should never refer to an
African American family as “thugs” .
Well 2:36 PM, there was nothing racist in that post.
If an African American family acts like thugs, they should be called thugs.
Same goes for White & Hispanic families that act like thugs.
(I didn't include Asian families, because I've never seen them act like thugs).
ISP aka House arrest is day for day.
First, I am glad that half of the people are here can read the judge was a special appointed Judge. He was longtime judge in Adams County and held that seat until he decided to retire. If he was a good judge then, he is a good judge now. We cant attack judges just because we dont like the outcome in a particular case.
As for the case, unlike some of you experts, I have tried murder cases. Murder cases where there are not witnesses are best cases to beat. Dead men dont testify against the defendant. The State understood that. She was a property owner on his premises and there was a person who did not have lawfully authority to be there at night. Regardless of the evidence some jurors, from any background, race or county, would never convict a person with fact alone. Regardless of what jurors say during questioning, we all hold our own deep rooted beliefs. The state was well aware of that.
For her to shoot with two guns and unload a clip, while in a car, makes no sense. Some jurors would convict on that alone. The defense attorney is experienced and knew that.
All of the above are the perfect receipt for a plea. She believes she is innocent but pleas to avoid possibly dying in jail. The State believes they could get a conviction, but knows a hung jury is possible so the parties cut there losses and make a deal. Happens in every county around here.
In chambers...
Defense counsel: Motion to fix your honor.
Judge: Mr. Prosecutor? (Wink, wink, nudge, nudge.)
Prosecutor: No objection.
Judge: Motion approved
2:36 PM
Thugs is as thugs does.
She must have paid handsomely for that Sweet deal.
I guess the victim(s) has to be White in order to actually go to jail like in the Karen Irby case. Isn’t Jody’s aunt by marriage, Judge Denise Sweet Owens, Dennis Sweet’s sister?? A connection….imagine that! Party at the family businesses - the cigar shop & 4th Avenue tonight!!
Can you imagine if a white man had done what she did and got off as lightly? There would be riots in every city in America.
@ 4:25...agree completely!!!
JJ uses the term “thug” for both black and white violent individuals. Not going to abandon a perfectly good term because some knuckleheads misuse it. Blacks have a point when they complain it only applies to blacks.
Justice was not served. This lady had every opportunity to call the police for assistance. She was in her car and could have moved herself out of any perceived harms way. In my opinion the judge didn't care. Did the judge have to accept the agreement between the prosecution and defense? The special judge was appointed to avoid the appearances that are currently under discussion.
Just because JJ calls a family a thug doesn’t mean they are thugs! The Attorneys did their job and the Judge did his, Please don’t spaz out over the comments nor this blog.
Next!
Greta is lucky he wasn't a pedigree dog. She might have to pay a fine.
She was trying to close her lot and Caveman wouldn't leave. We know that, what we don't know is why she wound up shooting a guy who was frequently walking her property, doing only he and her know what.
Maybe the case against her was weak and the agreement allowed both sides to win. After all, she can't even go to her liquor store for 2 years.
Not surprised by Dennis Sweet and Jody Owens, but the special judge accepting this garbage is a real head scratcher.
4:25, you're spot on. And look how much we taxpayers saved in incarceration costs!
For better or worse this is how the justice system works. You don’t get to strong-arm convictions and punishments based on popular opinion or angry bloggers.
I enjoy your blog sir but seems like you are taking this one personally.
Will Mayor Lumumba be sharing any comments from within the safe confines of his mansion inside of white Jackson's richest neighborhood?
I am seething! The corruption, being connected and getting off, the life of a black man regardless of his poverty is shown to be worth zero.
I don't know how to direct this anger. No one is listening.
Barak Patton.
This is very sad. They knew from the beginning Greta Brown was not going to jail. Her daddy and his years of political power took Sweet a big 100K cash money. He was all over town cashing in on favors. In my opinion the defense did their job. The prosecution however is bought and payed for. Greta was a big supporter or Jody my Jody’s campaign. So he was never about to fight to have her locked up anyway. I hope the voters of Hinds county remember this when he tries to run again if they are any voters left because Hinds county is everything except a “very special place”. I hate it here and if someone would buy my house I would leave in less than a minute
I'm not seeing the problem. The victim was no doubt a persistent pain in the ass, as so many street people in this town are. His death was no loss to anyone, maybe not even to himself. Sure, as a legal matter his killing was some form of criminal homicide, but since the memory of lawyers runneth not to the contrary there has always been the son-of-a-bitch rule. Meaning that a person who kills another may be excused, the law notwithstanding, when it is clear that the dearly departed had it coming. Not the law as such but things often work out that way in law. But for those of you who think this sentence is a travesty, rest assured that a felony conviction of manslaughter is of itself going to cause all kinds of problems for the defendant.
The judge's acceptance of this plea deal is NOT a head-scratcher at all. He served simply as a place-card, an appointed actor on stage, as it were. He fulfilled his appointed role and did it quickly. Was justice served? No, since that wasn't the goal in the first place. The only goal was to dispose of the case. The goal was achieved. The gavel sounded and people shuffled out of the courtroom, unaffected, perhaps thinking about coffee or an evening bourbon.
And forty others who look and act like the deceased, will continue their rotation at the corner of Lakeland and 55.
Like I said in a previous post a few weeks ago, “Well played John!”.
It's now open season on vagrants, bums, and other low-lifes. You residents of (The) Fondren and Belhaven should make note. There is no bag limit.
To be sentenced to ISP/house arrest you have to have preapproval from MDOC and a land line set up at the defendant's residence. If it is not preapproved or no land line, the offender is to go into MDOC custody immediately. Nevertheless, Miss. Code Ann. section 45-5-1003 seems to suggest that ISP/House arrest is not allowed for violent offenses as listed in section 97-3-2. Miss. Code Ann. section 97-3-2(1)(d) states that Manslaughter is a crime of violence.
Whether you like the sentence or not, it doesn't seem to be a legally valid sentence.
#iftheygunnedmedown
Wait, does that hashtag not work for black on black violence?
Greta is a bully, and she will kill again. Her version of the truth is almost comical. Now every other person who commits manslaughter in Hinds County will argue for this same "house arrest" sentence. I am praying for the victim's family because their loved one was treated like trash and justice was not served.
I had a client with an ankle monitor. The DA's office got mad when he was spotted at the 4th Avenue Lounge. I called the monitoring company and the guy was like "he's gotta eat doesn't he?" And I was like "you can explain that to the judge." So don't expect Mrs. Bully to curtail her life in any way.
Following up on 11:36: An Assistant D.A. once told he had no problem agreeing to "house arrest." He said it basically gives him the ability to pull someone off the street at-will, because practically no one complies with all provisions of ISP. Most are just incapable of self-regulation, even when faced with jail-time.
To follow up on 11:36's observation -- who owns the monitoring company? Is it still owned and operated by part of the same cartel that runs the Hinds County Courthouse?
And under what authority did the Judge seal this court record during these negotiations - that is not allowed in criminal trials. But guess just like they ignored the house arrest for manslaughter problem, evidently thought they could do the same in sealing the record.
A first year law student could have got a guilty verdict, shot from a car with two separate guns, this is not hard, but it was Hinds County on display.
Seems like a "get out of jail free" card was used here. If she plead guilty she should have served the time. I know people who have been in fights where nobody was injured and received more time than this.
No mention of the 'fambly members' who sullied the crime scene by planting bottles of liquor on and around the deceased?
This is the kind of crap that we endured during the fifties when (white) defendants got off without even a wink.
Mrs. Greta Brown-Bully called her father, son and the police were contacted.
There is lots of talk about her connections which means she had the ability and means to cover up what happened such as hide, burn or depose of the body in many ways which she did not do.
Think of all the unsolved murders and finding bodies. This easily could have been one of those cases; however, she chose to immediately address the issue with the law.
@1:33 PM Greta, thanks for the clarification.
@3:25PM
Greta doesn’t read this garbage ass blog.
@Kingfish. Agreed. First time in my life I’ve agreed with a good for nothing REDNECK, like yourself.
