State Auditor Shad White issued the following statement.
Today
State Auditor Shad White announced Special Agents from his office have
arrested former Northeast Mississippi Community College employee, Amy
Haynie, after she was indicted for embezzlement. Hanie was
issued a $68,762.87 demand letter upon her arrest. That demand total
includes interest and investigative expenses.
Haynie
is accused of embezzling cash from a college petty cash fund and from
students as they paid various college-related fees. Investigators
determined over $57,000 was stolen from the college.
Haynie was able to hide the alleged scheme from May 2016 to February
2020 because the internal controls in her office allowed her to
manipulate records of how cash was collected and deposited.
"The
auditor's office is committed to putting a stop to all fraud, but
particularly fraud that involves theft from the students of
Mississippi," said Auditor White. "These are not victimless crimes.
We will continue to pursue cases like these to make sure every dollar
is spent in accordance with the law."
Haynie surrendered to Special Agents at the Prentiss County Jail Her bond was set at $10,000 by the court.
If
convicted, Haynie faces up to 20 years in prison and $5,000 in fines.
All persons arrested by the Mississippi Office of the State Auditor are
presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court
of law. The case will be prosecuted by the office of District Attorney
John Weddle.
A
$10,000 surety bond covers Haynie’s employment at Northeast Mississippi
Community College. A surety bond is similar to insurance designed to
protect taxpayers from corruption. Haynie will remain
liable for the full amount of the demand in addition to criminal
proceedings.
Suspected fraud can be reported to the Auditor’s office online any time by clicking the red button at www.osa.ms.gov or via telephone during normal business hours at 1-(800)-321-1275.

I am happy to see that Shad is going after people pretty aggressively, but he needs to go after the big fish. Maybe he is just scared to stir the pot with those who are stealing big bucks.
Book 'em Danno. Mr. Shad, stay the course.
@4:06 PM - do tell. You seem to know who the thieves are, so report it to Shad's office. Crickets...
4:06, many times public figures want to go after high profile figures and the rich to get their names in the paper. Her, he is going after what I believe you would term "little fish". Lets give him props for going after the "little fish". Their crimes, while maybe not having as many zeros attached to them, is nevertheless criminal.
The school is complicit due to allowing lax policies that do NOT demand segregation of duties.
Next Up: Madison County Administrator.
Wish someone like Shad White was in charge of our elections. Win or lose, Demo or Repub, I could trust his results.
Dude, every county administrator. Tough job with so little resources and so much political pressure.
If she doesn't pay the money back immediately, hit her PERS account.
This will never stop until these stste retirement accounts can be attached for wrongdoing.
I'm with 4:29! If there's one thing our elected officials do, it's hold the rich accountable!
Regardless of the size of this crime, chances are very good someone was harmed through this theft. With money sometimes being tight on college students, it's possible cash money paid to this office was not properly credited to their account. That would require that student to pay double what was required. Seldom is a crime where someone isn't harmed in some way.
Little fish become big fish if not caught!!!
Shadrach: over and over I tell you to go after your mentor on TANF fraud before it is public. Then it'll be too late for you.
The entire system under the IHL is corrupt to the bone. It's awash in hundreds of millions of state dollars (and a billion in federal dollars) that disappear into nooks and crannies that have nothing to do with education.
The IHL board members should be individually removed for their conflicts of interest leading to deliberate lack of institutional control, and deliberate graft. Then charge each little fiefdom with a couple of RICO predicates for the constant threat of economic assassination (getting fired) of staff or faculty if you speak up about the knowing and deliberate fraudulent inducement of federal dollars through bogus financial aid data being submitted. The enrollment numbers and attendance records are COMPLETELY BOGUS and meant only to maximize the draw down of state and federal funds......all in the name of "education". Lies. All of it.
All the while, idiot administrators are slashing the staff and faculty to build clock towers and residence halls for which the numbers don't even support the ideas....it's all to say, "Look at me! I'm getting things done!" They're borrowing millions to build brand new Fine Arts facilities....but have publicly said they don't believe in a liberal arts education! Public education is a giant slush fund for the well connected in Mississippi....nothing more.
6:12 you do realize community colleges are not under the control of IHL right?
It never stops-
6:12, that's a lot of typing about the wrong organization
Didn't the IHL sign off on the $100 million welfare fraud that Shad uncovered? Why the hell were they washing money for the welfare budget? There sure is PLENTY of stink in the IHL to investigate....But fair enough all.....the Mississippi Community College Board then regarding this story. Corrupt to the bone - both of them.
Want be long before Shad is back in Columbus auditing some more of the city's books from what I hear. Seems the Feds may already be camped out here looking at a certain elected official.
'Dude, every county administrator. Tough job with so little resources and so much political pressure. November 17, 2020 at 5:37 PM'
Dude! Since when are tough jobs, limited resources and job pressure a license to steal public funds?
'Little Resources'? Right. Like virtually every tax dollar taken in by a county. Give a man three hats to wear and the vault combination, with no oversight and look what you have cookin' up in the kitchen.
Federal and state governments subsidize colleges and universities with hundreds of billions of dollars. That money benefits just a sliver of students. Biggest scam in history.
Goofball Shad is afraid to go after his god, Lord Phil. It’s only a matter of time before lord Phil’s house comes tumbling down. Hope goofball doesn’t get caught in the rubble. You always seem to just stop short of the big dog. He’s already given you the job so he can’t take it away. However, the voters can.
