Infectious disease expert Dr. Michael Osterholm says wiping down, masking up, and all those other Covid-19 precautions are almost useless. He called them measures to make people feel good. The video of the interview is posted below.

Trollfest '09
Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.
Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).
Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.
Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".
In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.
In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.
Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.
Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!
This is definitely a Beaver production.

Trollfest '07
Jackson Jambalaya is the home of Trollfest '07. Catch this great event which promises to leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Sonjay Poontang and his band headline the night with a special steel cage, no time limit "loser must leave town" bout between Alan Lange and "Big Cat"Donna Ladd following afterwards. Kamikaze will perform his new song F*** Bush, he's still a _____. Did I mention there was no referee? Dr. Heddy Matthias and Lori Gregory will face off in the undercard dueling with dangling participles and other um, devices. Robbie Bell will perform Her two latest songs: My Best Friends are in the Media and Mama's, Don't Let Your Babies Grow up to be George Bell. Sid Salter of The Clarion-Ledger will host "Pin the Tail on the Trial Lawyer", sponsored by State Farm.
There will be a hugging booth where in exchange for your young son, Frank Melton will give you a loooong hug. Trollfest will have a dunking booth where Muhammed the terrorist will curse you to Allah as you try to hit a target that will drop him into a vat of pig grease. However, in the true spirit of Separate But Equal, Don Imus and someone from NE Jackson will also sit in the dunking booth for an equal amount of time. Tom Head will give a reading for two hours on why he can't figure out who the hell he is. Cliff Cargill will give lessons with his .80 caliber desert eagle, using Frank Melton photos as targets. Tackleberry will be on hand for an autograph session. KIM Waaaaaade will be passing out free titles and deeds to crackhouses formerly owned by The Wood Street Players.

Well, crap!
Covidiots in 3...2...1...
There are two aspects to mask wearing: protection for oneself and protection for society. He is right regarding protection for oneself. That’s why health care workers need and use n95. He is wrong regarding protection for society. If everyone wears masks and the transmission is reduced from let’s say R0 of 1.10 to R0 of 0.90, that translates to having an exponential growth of cases turned into slowly eradicating the pandemic! That is simply math, and I am not sure if he really understands that (hey, even many doctors do not fully understand statistics, happen to the best people). And reducing the transmission is possible with masks that are not n95. Masks do not have to be perfect for this, the effect that even plain cloths masks have will add up (if everyone uses them)! That is like with interests/ fees for investing. Small changes with these will have huge changes over time.
The biggest Obstacle here is that people think only about themselves, not about society. We are too individualistic...
Every day that passes proves the Plandemic film to be accurate.
Meanwhile the smoothbrain leftists keep regurgitating their MSM programmed talking points. They appear indistinguishable from NPCs in a video game. At this point are they still human or just merely meat puppets for the postmodern combine?
Sure, pay no attention to how every other normal country on earth has controlled the virus and are returning to normal, but our infections are skyrocketing. I wonder what the difference could be?
why is he talking about masks as a form of protection? No one is saying that, at all. You wear it to reduce the transmission rates coming out of your own face. Also, maybe don't cite all of the mask wearing in Asia not having an impact when its being compared to what the hell is going on in this country. We are failing miserably, and for plenty of reasons. Not wearing masks, going to bars, youth sports, etc.
That is complete and utter bullshit 9:55am. The reasons your comparison is absurd are legion, from population size, to ways of life, to lies by totalitarian regimes. Not to mention the fallacy of thought that other countries have some how beaten it and will be back to normal. Give us some stats on the economies of those other countries and what they mean to the world and to the way of life of billions around the world.
You are a narrow minded moron who just blurts out bullshit talking points of the left, meant to incite an emotional response from you and make you think the US is incompetent and a danger to the world and all that crap your ilk has spouted in different ways for decades (global warming is US fault, poverty in the 3rd world is the US fault, the spread of this virus in the US fault). The reality is the world would be an utter shit hole without the US and our drive to achieve, ie. greed (as individuals), and our economy roaring. Just shut the fuck up.
I listen to his Podcast every Wednesday. I haven’t saw this video yet but he specifically talks about the effectiveness of masks and facial coverings. This title is sorta clickbait.
for all you worry birds, the death rate is plummeting. thats all that matters. herd immunity
It's dangerous to suggest that these things aren't 100% effective, so we just shouldn't use them. And even if that is not strictly his suggestion, I think that making these statements gets twisted by people who are already anti-precaution.
When you sneeze and cover your nose and mouth with your hands or elbow, you aren't 100% protecting the surrounding area from your germs, but you're doing better than just sneezing into someone's face. By some people's logic, you should just let the sneezes and coughs fly because it's not 100% effective.
Wear a mask.
9:50 am That you believe the anti-vaxxer created nonsense in Pandemic makes you a candidate for a brain scan and MMPI.
9:42 is showing off. But his knowledge is at the level of the early cave-man. He'll play well to this crowd, though.
It's just plain amazing. It seems everyone with some sort of title, and many without, are now experts on what to do or not to do. We either shut down too much too late or not enough soon enough.
He is certainly entitled to his opinion, but be very careful when listening to precisely what he is saying. He is a PhD, not an MD, but with epidemiology specifically, it doesn't matter much which track he took. However, he doesn't have medical training or training in other areas of the sciences required to form a "big picture" of the entire situation.
A few key points:
1. He states flat-out that N95s do protect and that he would be very scared if his daughter didn't have one while in an area with high virus transmission potential. He also says that health care workers must have and wear them. Do with this information what you will, but every time I hear someone in a healthcare-related field say, "Health care workers need them, but the public doesn't...," I cringe at the self-absorbed tone. While I agree that healthcare workers need them to treat patients much, much more than Bubba and Bubbette need them to wander around Walmart, that doesn't mean that they will not protect Bubba and Bubbette if they are being selfish assholes. It means that they do work, healthcare workers absolutely need PPE, and Bubba and Bubbette are selfish assholes. Most sensible folks already knew those things anyway.
2. He has also stated that "masks," and not limited to N95s, and "physical distancing" (his preferred term for "social distancing" and I agree with him on this) are helpful. See www.npr.org/2020/06/17/879255417/amid-confusion-about-reopening-an-expert-explains-how-to-assess-covid-risk for more info from Osterholm). So, if you choose to assume that he is the expert to listen to, until everyone has an N95, there should be severe limitations on many social and business activities, particularly anything where people cannot physically distance themselves from each other. In other words, things like bars, restaurants, sporting events, church services, concerts, etc. are essentially out by implication. Most retail would be severely limited or people would really have follow strict guidelines - for example, people could not pass each other in aisles or otherwise get less than 8 (8, not 6) feet apart. And that just isn't going to happen.
3. There have been numerous studies that show that aerosols are contained by wearing cloth or "surgical"/procedure masks. If you want to see videos, all or most of the studies are online.
4. His view as expressed in this video is not a majority view of doctors, epidemiologists, and others in related sciences. It isn't solely his own, but it is a small minority view.
Osterholm is a bit of a puzzle. He should know better.
While he is invited " in" at the federal and professional levels as the Minnesota lead expert on infectious diseases, his entire education and career has been mostly limited to Minnesota's borders.
9:42 am may be right that he doesn't understand statistics. That is a weakness in the medical community as statisticians who read medical research know.
It's possible that in specializing, he's ignored research by other specialities that dispute his conclusions.
Or, perhaps his value has been an eidetic memory( which is now overly rewarded in educational testing) but he lacks sufficient curiosity and/or comprehension. It's always good to have someone in the group with total recall.
I'm surprised he's not wondered why doctors wear a mask to prevent and protect themselves. Why are there hazmat suits and PPE? And, why is it that he doesn't defer to those in his field with far more experienced and better credentials?
It could be early onset of Alzheimer's or Dementia or worse the hope of political recognition and the money and perks that can bring these days.
The pandemic is a true test as to what political system is best during a crisis. Is it the diverse culture capitalist democracy US, UK S. Korea or is it single culture authoritarian rule Russia, China, N. Korea the best in crisis mode? My bet is that authoritarian rule will be the big winner.
I guess if masks don't work and people won't practice social distancing then there is no choice but to start shutting things back down. The curve is taking a very noticeable upswing and we need to ensure the medical capacity doesn't get overwhelmed.
For those 2/3 of Mississippians who refuse to even try wearing a mask, you've got nobody to blame but yourselves when you lose your job later.
@9:55 Well said! Europe, etc were in the same predicament but guess what? They are now banning US citizens because they did something that people here just refuse to do. WEAR A MASK!!!
I trust 9:42 more than I trust Osterholm and do you know why? Osterholm got his medical degree at some college. 9:42 got their medical degree from Facebook and the media. Two degrees are better than 1!
I might believe him if it weren't for the experience in Japan. Almost 100% wear masks and incredibly low infection rates.
https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2020/05/28/national/science-health/masks-helped-fight-coronavirus/#.Xv4SBxJ7lhE
@9:55 exactly what countries are you talking about?
You all take care. Going West for the holiday. Hope the sheep don't stress too much, but remember, drink early and drink often.
Just one opinion. The overwhelming medical consensus is that masks help and should be worn.
Heil 10:46 speech ist dangerous!
@12:06. That's correct. Consensus is more important than facts.
12:28, consensus from global medical experts is more important than your facebook degree and the one doctor who supports you that's been put out to pasture by the leading clinical organizations in the US.
I would suggest folks take a look at the COVID situation in Vietnam: about 225 million people, very few reported infections (under 1000), and none or a very few deaths. While certainly it isn't a freedom-loving utopia of capitalist wonder, it isn't North Korea either. I'd suggest that many if not most Vietnamese aren't really communists or socialists, they just didn't and don't want to be told what to do by the French, the US, or anyone besides themselves...you know, just like everyone and every other country on earth. Anyway, what they do have is a widespread "for the good of all/society" attitude, a fairly strong sense of family, down-to-earth common sense, and, ahem, a "mask culture." And as an aside, Osterholm specifically cites China and Wuhan as having a mask culture, yet cites it as evidence that masks didn't prevent COVID there. No, it didn't PREVENT it, but it clearly helped contain it. Even if you believe the Chinese numbers are inaccurate, they aren't so inaccurate to be near the US infection numbers, plus, China has about five times the population. If the total US numbers were in the 25,000 to even the 100,000 range and the infection rate was now even 50 new cases a day, it would be a totally different situation.
The bottom line is that COVID is spread by the conduct of people failing to control themselves in a reasonable and rational manner. If those certain people cannot control themselves, it is the duty and obligation of state and federal government to protect society. For those of you who got your advanced education in medicine and Constitutional law at the Skool of Soshul Medeya, yes, the President and Congress each have both the duty and authority to enact a lot more stringent controls then they have chosen thus far (ifor example, see Art I, Sec 8 and the 5th Amendment).
tired of all the experts- good predictions depend on good data and since we are all being fed so much $#^& contradictory data who can you trust other than the hard hospital #'s (assuming they are good?)
Went to Kroger in Madison today and about 90% were wearing masks. Seemed much higher than the last several weeks.
Commerce, commerce, commerce. There's the incentive to suggest that wearing a mask provides meaningful protection (either to the wearer or others with whom the wearer makes close contact). The false god of economic prosperity must be worshipped and is worthy of sacrifice. And the masses must be encouraged to get their ass out there and "worship" on the alter of spending.
I truly believe you’ll see guys with assault rifles without masks in many of our streets if we issue mandatory mask rules. I find it hard to believe masks don’t help, but I’m not a scientist. What I am is an astute observer of the sloped brow cretins that populate our right wing. They will flipping kill you before they’ll obey a mask order.
You know what? I'm calling bullshit. Masks are worn to protect others. If you don't care that you may be killing someone just so you can show your "independence," then have at it. As for me, I care more about others than strutting around flexing my partisan attitude. So, I'll be wearing the damn mask. As long as it's necessary.
All I know is that no masks equals no football. USC (the California one) announced today that fall classes will be online. South Carolina's governor said that if things didn't improve over July, they'd cx football.
If you don't care about other enough to do it, at least wear masks for your enjoyment of football.
I love Osterholm's Podcast. He has basically said we don't have the data on Masks to really know for sure. I'm just under the impression that if a respiratory virus can be spread, treat it like TB. Distance and if you can't, cover your face. I respect Osterholm and he has more experience in this than I have been alive.
@3:11, wearing masks means no football. But you know what's best. I'd thank God for you're presence but you'd probably just say "You're welcome"
How the hell does wearing masks cx football,4:10?
Get a grip people! Sportsball should be least of your concerns! No wonder you are losing your country! Will you sheeple ever wake up?
