Mississippi Speaker of the House Philip Gunn worried the pandemic may be worsening in Mississippi. He stated in an email sent to members last week:
To: Mississippi House of Representatives From: Philip Gunn
Date: June 1, 2020
Re: COVID-19 June 1 Update
Status of the virus
Unfortunately, we are beginning to see a rise in hospitalizations across the state.
There is concern that we are at or over hospital capacity in the Jackson and Hattiesburg areas. If we continue to see a rise in hospitalizations, we very well could exhaust hospital capacity on other areas as well.
We also currently have 113 patients on ventilators, which is the highest number to date.
If these trends continue, we could experience what we have been trying to avoid – an overrun in the capacity of our healthcare system to treat those with the virus.
The Mississippi Department of Health (MDOH) believes this is the result of people ignoring the social distancing guidelines and other guidelines that were implemented.
In those areas where spikes are occurring, reports from those areas indicate people are gathering in groups without proper safety measures in place.
Even though businesses are allowed to open and resume activity, the MDOH is still asking people to continue to be vigilant in following the CDC and MDOH guidelines on social distancing, hand washing, and wearing masks.
We cannot get casual or relax in fighting this virus. We must continue to engage in safe practices to help eradicate the spread of this virus.
If we are not careful, all the gains we made this spring by our painful sacrifices could be lost. Disaster Relief for Easter Storms
The Governor’s request for federal public assistance for additional counties following April 12, 2020, Easter Tornadoes, has been approved.
Initially, Jones, Covington and Jefferson Davis Counties were approved for public assistance. The following counties are now eligible public assistance through FEMA: Bolivar, Calhoun, Carroll, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Clarke, Clay, Coahoma, Grenada, Holmes, Jasper, Lafayette, Lawrence, Leake, Montgomery, Noxubee, Panola, Quitman, Smith, Sunflower, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tunica, Walthall, Webster and Yalobusha.
The purpose of the Public Assistance (PA) Grant Program is to support communities’ recovery from major disasters by providing them with grant assistance for debris removal, life-saving emergency protective measures, and restoring public infrastructure. Local governments, states, tribes, territories and certain private nonprofit organizations are eligible to apply.
Update on the number of cases.
215 cases reported yesterday.
Total cases statewide now number 14,790.
Unfortunately, we now have 710 deaths.

So, as KF first recommended, why haven't the goofballs built Covid-only patient facilities during the past two months to isolate these patients? Leadership? Hah!
@ 2:48 Just where would you build these facilities? How many would you build? And how would you get satisfactory facilities built in a two month period?
Great suggestion - now lets see you come up with some answers to the practical questions that your suggestion creates
2:48...'Built'? Would you recommend a tent hospital at the fairgrounds? How long do you think it would take to 'built' and staff a hospital? You probably think we could close Parchman and turn it into a covid factory like the nursing homes.
Where in the hell is he seeing a rise in Covid hospitalizations? Is the data at MSDH wrong?
Well, after the the Club Mirage throw down in Madison County, it wouldn't surprise me to see infections
in that area increase ten fold in about two weeks.
Someone needs to hook Speaker Gunn up with a copy of the documentary film Plandemic so he will no longer fear the hoax.
I'm with @3:43, where's he seeing this big increase in cases, and what evidence does he have that Jackson hospitals are at or near capacity?
This is a no-brainer. We are maybe in the 3rd inning of a 9 inning game but if you look around, everyone is acting like it is all over. If we are going to end up with 1500 or 2500 deaths in Mississippi (which sounds about right) and we have 700 deaths, go figure.
Is Dr. Dobbs and his band of merry warriors able to tell us where in the community the infections are coming from? What is the value of all the "test and isolate" vans and testing sites? Are the infections coming from indoor restaurants? Hair salons? Doctor's offices?

I see you listen to Osterholm. Respect.
At least a portion of this is designed to see how easily we will line up for whatever, whenever, where ever
listening to "Plandemic" is like taking advice on how to raise/live with tigers from Joe Exotic....
I know people who have died from this...not a hoax.
113 on respirators. That’s over one per county! Shut this muther back down!
How about roll some beds into all these college basketball venues that are sitting empty? Or the USM volleyball gym? Or all those buildings left behind in Jackson by state agencies moving to sweet new digs?
there seems to be a disconnect between what the speaker's letter says, and what the MS Dept of Health's website which is supposedly updated daily says. The hospitalized cases, ICU cases, suspected hospitalized cases, and vents are all relatively flat over last 5 days, at least on the MSDH website. What gives?
3:30 and 3:33, check out the 1000 covid bed facility built in less than a month inside the New Orleans Convention Center. So do the same thing at the Jackson Convention Center and other viable vacant buildings with electric and mechanical already in place around MS. Next questions?
How about using Metro Center Mall?
Real estate ain't the problem. We don't have the skilled labor to take care of more really sick people.
5:18 113 COVID patients on ventilators. There are going to be more patients on ventilators than just them. Its not like hospitals kept a large, unused stockpile on hand. Don't underestimate the number of COVID patients it will take to overwhelm what little extra capacity we have available.
Put up a tent city at the zoo. It's not being used, or better yet, Jackson City Hall, because nothing productive takes place there.
Gunn is a little man, with a little brain, living in his own little world.
Since Tate Reeves refuses to wear a mask, then neither will I.
5:43 - You seem to be a 'small thinker'. Sure, we could put 1400 Army cots on the floor of the Coliseum with quarters for nurses up in the stands. But, this is not a situation of providing four day housing for hurricane victims.
Oh, but you suggest all that's needed is a large venue with a roof and 110 electrical outlets - so there's your thinking again. Why didn't you suggest floating a US NAVY hospital ship up the Pearl and docking it at the Spillway?
Doesn't Gunn have enough to do without pretending to be Governor and State Health Officer? Asking for 3/4 of the House members.
@6:44pm - March called and wants its fearmongering back!
We are gonna need bigger closets.
Q: "How would you get satisfactory facilities built in a two month period?"
A: Don't involve the government.
And: "Put up a tent city at the zoo. It's not being used, or better yet, Jackson City Hall, because nothing productive takes place there."
I thought those were one and the same.
Speaker Gunn is just pumping those numbers to squeeze every drop of federal dollars out of this exaggerated health concern. MS is going to have to change their data once an audit of how they were diagnosing people is completed. Pennsylvania already had to, and Colorado's DOH also has egg on their face for saying someone died of COVID when it was alcohol poisoning. MS is deliberately inflating their numbers for $$$$$$$$$$.
"How about using Metro Center Mall?" Actually a good question and idea.
What about the old Cabot Lodge?
10:13...You seriously over-estimate Gunn's authority and ability.
