WLBT Questions JPD Crime Reports

What's in a number? Quite a bit if it is the crime statistics for Jackson.  WLBT's C.J. Lemaster dived deep into the crime stats for Jackson and didn't like what he found.  He reported:

While JPD only posted the crime pages on Twitter a few times in 2018, JPD posts the weekly Comstat reports on the city website.  That report contains a summary of city-wide crime as well as precinct reports.

Those dems love to cook the books using their fuzzy math.

180 total police!! Geez! That's not nearly enough to police this zoo. One things for sure...CJ Lemaster will be moving up and out of this market if he keeps this up. Hate to see you go CJ. Thanks for all your work. You clearly care.

This is sad, pathetic, disturbing, disgusting and frightening. Get out while you still can.

see the article about the gang fights / bullying @ Cardozo Middle School?

Good for WLBT. But they are just scratching the surface. Clinton, Hinds County, Ridgeland and Madison and Pearl and Brandong have been reporting DECLINING crime rates for years. If crime was falling like all of these places say, there would be no crime. This is a result of nobody with a journalism degree knowing how to look at numbers.....until this guy.

Hey Mayors, you better scrub next month's crime stats.

60 officers a shift in a city that is nearly 115 square miles, 160,000 people?
Criminals have very little to worry about. Jackson is just one disaster away from a Black Hawk Down type scenario.
With the staggering truancy rates, wayward students out number police officers on any given day. At any given time half of those officers are processing criminals or crime scenes, leaving 30 or so officers to police the city. Safety is not sustainable given these figures. Add to that, criminals are being churned through the criminal justice system and being rapidly released to commit more crimes. This is a losing scenario. I counted 21 squad cars at one crime scene. During those times there must be just two dozen officers working the beat. My suggestion is by a gun, get permitted and protect yourself. The mayor and the police chief are always “ taking steps” to correct the problem. Always ready to have discussions and to make radical plans, this is short for “ we are not going to get anything done.” I hold out little hope that Jackson will end up any better than Soweto or Port aPrince. Good luck Jacksonians! Without any solution on the horizon expect crime to continue to skyrocket. Just do not expect the Choke or JPD to tell you truly what is happening..

And that my friends is the bottom line.

Seriously. What do you expect? Why would anyone be a cop? A criminal can steal a car, pulll a gun, shoot at officers, and if officer fires back trying to save his own life, the NAACP is formulating a march, Carlos Moore’s phone is ringing, and CNN is running a breaking news story. All for 32K/year. Not to mention the cop who tried to protect the community is vilified by having name released. Prediction - you ain’t seen nothing yet! A year from now, there will be less cops, and those who are left won’t touch a black neighborhood. Then, CNN and other liberals will be screaming racism because cops aren’t protecting them.

60 officers a shift assumes they work every day of the year. The true math would assume they work only 5 days a week for 50 weeks a year. They also get sick leave (which they probably take). if you readjust the numbers, you will find these numbers are woefully inaccurate, or skewed to paint an even more rosier picture.

Would it be possible for the state to install some type of strict oversight concerning JPD's crime numbers?

In other words, lets get the fox out of the hen house.

I wonder if this was done at the direction of the highest office in the city. That would be REALLY "radical".

ANOTHER Jackson murder. Annual projection now 141 for 2019.

10:17 - as a layperson, what's the optimal coverage for patrol officers? And does it vary on the type of area (residential, commercial, etc.)?

This is excellent reporting. This is real journalism by a real journalist, not some fluff from a “TV personality.” One can tell the JPD representatives are playing fast and loose with the truth, just observe the way their eyes shift around when confronted with provable facts and analysis. Then, of course, there is the “I don’t have those numbers handy.” What a crock.
Reminds me of the Governor’s Cabinet scene from Blazing Saddles. . .

60 officers per shift, divided by 4 precincts equals 15 officers per precinct per shift. The officers work 8 hour shifts, 5 days on 2 days off. That
leaves 11 officers working each precinct per shift, 44 for the entire city. Factor in vacation and sick leave and you are looking at less than 40
officers working on any given day. JPD has been toying with Comstat numbers for years, changing Auto Theft to Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle; Burglaries to Larceny or Trespass; Aggravated Assault to Simple Assault, get the picture, change the reported crime to a misdemeanor for statistics.
The number of officers has been on a steady decline resulting in lower quality individuals becoming officers leading to decreasing professionalism throughout the department. Hinds County SO has been dealing with the same problem. Fewer people as a whole choose law enforcement as a career and even fewer choose Jackson/Hinds County as a place to live and work. Having been born here and spending most of my life here it is sad to see.

With all of the Stars and other quasi military brass decorations on these "officers", I would have thought that there were at least "battalion strength" numbers of officers and men. At least they have the resources to keep those Harley's they ride available for the St. Patricks's day parade.

Kingfish, they actually don’t post them to the website weekly. I tried to look in December and I saw a report from October posted there. It’s hard to see that because there’s no main page for COMSTAT reports, which would have each week on a separate link. There’s only the “crime stats” link, which takes you to whatever PDF they decided to post there.

7:14, you're exactly right. Reminds me of the present ACLU suit against the Madison County Sheriff's Office. The plaintiff in the ACLU suit is suing the owner of the apartment complex where he lives claiming that there is an atmosphere of excessive crime and violence at the apartment complex and that the apartment owner has failed to provide sufficient security at the complex. So the MCSO starts patrolling the apartment complex more often and trying to reduce the crime there, and now the same guy and the ACLU have sued the MCSO for racial profiling and discrimination. WTF ?

Record keeping is the least of the problem.

There's only one difference between Marshal Fisher's appeal to the legislature and the way Jackson handles it's crime reports. Fisher claims what his agency does is nobody's business and Jackson PD just makes shit up.

No wonder Warren Strain bought a bus ticket across town.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
