Mayor Speaks on Murders

Update (1/13/19): Suspects arrested in both murders. More to follow.

Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba issued the following statement.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of those who died due to senseless acts of violence today and our continued prayers and support go out to all of the families who have suffered at the hands of senseless violence in this city. We will continue to do all that we can to stop this pressing issue of violence in our communities. Our police department has already captured persons of interest in both cases today. While our police department does all that it can to solve these crimes after they take place, in fact, doing so at a rate better than the national average, our police department is incapable of stopping these instances before they take place. They don’t have the tools to enter the minds and stop these people, these acts of violence before they take place. This requires the engagement of every person in this city from the mayor, to the community leader, to the neighbor. We must focus not only on the what, but the why, understanding that the conditions which lead to this criminal activity must be addressed first in order to prevent these circumstances from taking place. We look forward to addressing this issue tomorrow during a press conference to speak to the issues and the concerns that the community may have.”

Such a moving speech. I am certainly encouraged by the mayor's quick response to these issues. I know the citizens of Jackson, and the surrounding communities will be more comfortable with their daily activities in the metro Jackson area.....wait, what am I saying.

"... incapable of stopping these instances before they take place." This is in contrast to stopping them AFTER they take place.

It's just the perception of murder.

Standing by for some grants and bond sales, and maybe even a "blue ribbon commission" and/or a paid study by a FOTM (friends of the mayor).

Want to put a stop to it? Grow some balls. Get a murder conviction then drag them out to city center and put them in front of a firing squad. Make sure all the troubled youth on the wrong path watch... until that day comes this only gets worse and more frequent.

Just a bunch of hot air. I have an idea-let’s have a justice system that actually works. Let’s stop electing the idiots Jackson keeps putting in there and let’s get serious about crime. Let’s re-introduce public hangings. You commit a crime, your family and anyone else who wants to watch comes to the front steps of the courthouse and can watch a good ole-fashioned hanging...no more of this bullshit sitting in a jail posting thug videos on YouTube until judge Green gets a call from your momma or Stokes or some other piece of shit and then let’s you go. Crime + Real Punishmnt = a reduction in crime. It’s a SIMPLE formula Mr. Mayor. Try it. I promise it will work. Or, do it your way-have a USELESS press conference, allude to a bunch of bullshit reasons AND NOTHING GETS BETTER. We’ve done it your way, Mr. Mayor and it’s not working.

10:30 is exactly correct...it needs to happen - you start hanging or firing squad on know murders and it will get much better ( and save tax payers millions) quicker

Get To The Nut Of It! said...

Why didn't the mayor include in his speech something like: "Our justice system has GOT to stop turning these criminals loose or imposing light sentences which return criminals to our streets. I will be addressing this in more detail beginning tomorrow".

Until remarks like that come from the Mayor and other elected officials, we (the rest of us) can bitch and moan about it til the cows come home. It has GOT to come from people like the mayor, the governor, those elected officials who represent Hinds County and Jackson, mayors in surrounding towns, police chiefs, sheriffs.

Lamumbles is an empty suit, full of hot air and no concrete solutions. The gloves have to come off, and the criminal element needs to feel sustained discomfort in Jackson. This takes hard work and not just empty speeches - bring back the flex squad and work the corners aggressively, institute stop and frisk, and instead of going after the cops make the operating environment for criminals difficult enough that they leave.

Unfortunatley, it must get worse before we can make a plea to the UN for “peacekeeping” troops.

If we have a pretendium global government, that feigns concern for human rights, we should use it for our own ends. I wonder what the candians would think about Jackson?

The national emergency is not at the border. The national emergency is in our inner cities. Places like Jackson pose more of a threat to my life than 100 media hyped Central American caravan “invaders.”

So, in other words, the Mayor says it takes a village of civilians and private persons to stop crime. Reminds me of Hillary's assertion that it takes a village to raise children rather than responsible parenting by the parents.

At any rate, thank you to JPD for its quick work. Good job, guys.

The Mayor has been bragging about JPDs homicide case closure rate lately but no one is looking into the whole picture. JPDs MO when a homicide occurs is ask for help from the public, and develop a suspect or two based solely off tips. Then, rather than going out and making the arrest themselves they put the suspects information in the media so it looks like they are a proactive agency. This gives the suspect time to develop an alibi, create a story, and bring themselves down to JPD. Their investigators completely lose the opportunity to have a proactive confrontational interview with a suspect who is not prepared ahead of time, it’s awful police work. JPD gets to say they arrested someone, but a decent percentage of the murders are never successfully prosecuted. If you compare the arrest/case closure rate to the successful prosecution rate there is a substantial difference. But no one is looking into this. Some of the homicide detectives are notorious for issuing warrants on people off faulty tips, making an arrest on the wrong person, and then they get released and no one asks any questions. Someone should go back and look at the approximately 85 homicides that occurred in 2018 and see how many were successfully prosecuted, I’d be willing to bet it’s around 20-30%. They are playing a shell game by making arrests and bragging about the closure rate, but successful prosecutions DO NOT occur later. Poor JPD is under staffed, underpaid, and their command staff is a bunch of yes men for the mayors liberal anti law enforcement initiatives. The mayor would benefit from realizing broken windows theory policing is a legitimate factually proven strategy in high crime neighborhoods and statistically it works. They are more concerned about releasing officers names within 72 hours to the media than actually fighting crime in our cities neighborhoods. Get ready for more excuses.

Only the blacks can fix the black problems. The challenge is that many black leaders want to maintain these problems in order to be re-elected by blaming others.

There is absolutely nothing the mayor or anyone else can do about what is happening. There is a segment of our society that is out of control; total breakdown in that culture. A cop on every corner will have no effect. It is a disease for which there is no vaccine.

The leadership of Jackson won't come out and say what has really caused all of this violence...it's a lack of male leadership within the home. If a kid from a a home where a father and mother live and strive to raise children who respect other people and other persons' property then grows up to be a shuckin' and jivin' law breaking citizen, that's the exception. Not the rule. Mama and Daddy living right, working hard, spankin' some disrespectful a$$es when needed and just loving their kids...damn, you'd see crime drop to nothing. But society as a whole (across all colors, ethnic groups, religions, races, etc.) has degraded to the point where nothing is sacred or valuable anymore. Take what you want and don't worry about the consequences or the collateral damage.

Anonymous said...

@Narvel
There is plenty that the mayor can do. However, his racist leftist ideology prevents him from doing it. He would need the help of the Governor and President Trump.

1.) The mayor can declare a state of emergency and insinuate curfews and checkpoints as required.
2.) Invest in armored vehicles, body armor, swat gear, and AR15s. Make criminals afraid of JPD.
3.) Whenever a violent murder happens, that neighborhood goes into checkpoint lockdown for at least a month. Everyone coming in and out must show ID. And have a legit reason for being there.
4.) Be prepared for mass arrests and the pending prosecutions. No catch and release.
5.) Do not prosecute citizens who defend themselves from the violent predators with lawful deadly force.

Seriously, stop and frisk approach worked in NYC and it can work in Jackson. Mayor and Governor also need to be prepared to declare Martial Law and enforce the curfew. This type of 'Strong on Crime' approach would work. It has in the past. And a black mayor won't fear the accusations of racism. His success would be a legacy lasting decades.

Anonymous said...

@8:47 AM continued...

If the mayor can reverse the crime problem with his leadership, the side effects can turn the fortunes of the city around. His leadership would become a model, a proof in concept of how to fix this growing national problem.

That is a legacy that can get a man elected President of the United States.

JPD needs a unit that is comprised of 10-20 proactive law enforcement officials from outside of JPD. A unit that works completely separated from JPD. A unit with the knowledge and understanding from the street level to the court room.

A unit who knows how to "circumvent" the justice system. A unit who will target career criminals who are out on bond. Once arrested for another felony which carries 5 years, request a NO bond which is the law under the Mississippi Constitution. And if/when this is not honored by the Hinds County Judicial system, hold a news conference on each and everyone until the Judges get the point.

There are several qualified people in the metro area who could run a successful unit such as this. Seek them out, give them the money they needed to do the job and sit back and wait to see the results.

@9:19 Antar is engaging in CYA.

Murders are happening because Jackson is deficient.
Jackson is deficient because not enough money is being spent to cure the deficiencies.
Until the money is spent expect murder to continue in Jackson.

Jackson is broke.
Jackson can't cure deficiencies without money.
Jackson demands free money from others without conditions or controls.
Until unfettered money of sufficient amount (as defined by Antar) is provided expect murder to continue in Jackson.

I agree with @8:45 that "it's a lack of male leadership within the home." I'd be interested to know whether the existing male leadership in the home consists of someone who is on parole for similar crimes.

I also believe some of the local judges and the District Attorney's office are the chief enablers, and therefore part of the problem.

I have yet to see the constitution stop a curfews and checkpoints and other police actions in a bona fide declared State of Emergency.

Think about every major natural disaster and terrorist attack. The door to door search in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon Bombing comes to mind. Don't forget Houston last year and New Orleans during Katrina.

You must be one of those people who believes DUI checkpoints are constitutional. They aren't and they still take place because there is public support and a judge said it was okay.

Having children while in poverty exasperates poverty. Parents who can't take care of themselves mentally and financially are not able to care for kids, which in turn leaves many of these children rudderless, and violent. That is your why Lumumba!

This is a result of the “Great Society “ which began in the 1960’s under LBJ. Generations later we are
where we are. An under educated population with little to no family structure totally dependent on the government.
A failed public education system producing individuals without the ability to be a productive member of society.
Children having children without the knowledge or means to care for them. If you are raised with no one caring for you
no sense of right from wrong and no value for human life then who cares if you kill someone for a cellphone.
We are generations into this problem and we need leadership to identify the problem and put policies in place
to create change. Having spent over 30 years policing in Jackson I saw too many young children that I knew had little to
no chance in life and eventually ended up in the system or dead. I know law enforcement can’t fix the problem. They can be a part of the solution. Unfortunately I don’t see the political will to identify the problem much less take any meaningful action. The ruling class is dependent on their votes so the ruling class needs voters dependent on them.

If I may summarize, it boils down to sad fact that the current mayor of Jackson is completely unsuited to be the mayor of any city the size of Jackson, much less one with the serious issues facing Jackson. It doesn't matter if his heart is in the right place, he wants whatever is best, etc., etc., etc., he simply is not capable of doing the job. Why can't we just quit screwing around and admit it...oh, yeah...money.

Sorta like the rest of Mississippi and the white and black folks who hold office yet are totally unfit for the office they hold. Until Mississippi voters forget about skin color and "GOP" or "Dem" and start thinking about "competent," things are gonna suck around here. And no, Espy wasn't the answer to anything except "who isn't a good candidate for the US Senate," right along with Cindy Lou-who and lil' Chrisie. And no, complete and total morons like Ocasio-Cortez are DEFINITELY not the answer to anything other than "name a complete and total moron who managed to get elected to Congress." Jeez, I would have never suspected I would have considered someone like Kasich to be a - even THE - polestar POTUS candidate, but there you are. God (or someone) help us all.

@8:14 AM, Mayor Yammeralot as reported in the Clarion-Ledger:

The mayor brought up open carry laws specifically.

"The contradiction of gun control is that we don't want young people with a car early in their lives, and we shouldn't want young people with a weapon. We shouldn't be arming young people who haven't matured," the mayor said. "I know people in the South are very attached to their firearms, but we can do some things to make it harder.”

Typical straw man play by Yammeralot (that NOBODY in the media challenges) who insinuates that children under the age of 16 -- the legal age to drive in Mississippi -- are allowed to carry a weapon because of Mississippi's Open Carry law even though we don't yet legally trust them with a car. Or, is Mayor Gum Flapper saying that we should raise the legal driving age to 18?

Elect a totally inexperienced greenhorn as your Mayor, have a totally inexperienced greenhorn fail at running your city.

Philbilly sounded like his orange hero with his empty declaration to end violence in Jackson on his own if he has to. Tough talk for a lame duck who will be packing his bags and boxes this summer to retreat to Rankin County. Remember GOPGodEmperorTrump declaring his administration would straighten out the non stop violence in Chicago? Yeah, I barely remember too. But neither of them can fix what is largely a cultural and spiritual problem in urban America. Mayor Ludumba doesn't have the answers either, but sadly he's probably in the best position to do something directly about it.

Anonymous said...

As someone who makes really good PowerPoint presentations and would really like a job as a highly compensated consultant to the Mayor's office, I think he is on the right track by spending some of that bond money on focus groups and social justice boondoggles!

We need to fly to an out of state conference in Chicago, Detroit, or Washington DC pronto! Those cities have it figured out.

I have the solution said...

....and here it is. "Guns for Water, take the squirts out of crime". That's right, right? The City of Jackson, for 2 days and 2 days only, right, will conduct a "Water Bill Amnesty" program where guns may be exchanged in lieu of paying your water bill. In return, all participants will be issued a life like BB gun. We've already seen that a neighboring Police department will not tactically engage a yute with a BB gun, right? Now, if you gonna rob somebody, just stick the BB gun to their head, right? They don't know if it is a real gun or not, right, they'll hand over their loot and nobody gets hurt, right? Want to be brave and knock off a Dollar General Store? Same thing, right? This will allow the "underground economy" of Jackson to flourish and nobody gets hurt, right?

Anonymous said...

@11:05 AM - Memphis has "figured it out" too, so why not just drive to Memphis for that junket, err, conference? Oh wait, that would be too close to home, allowing our top notch, take no prisoners, "investigative" journalists report back to the home folks.

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.
