Dental School Offers Freek Week of Dental Care

UMMC issued the following statement.

Nathaniel Williams of Jackson will be returning to this year’s Dental Mission Week at the University of Mississippi Medical Center after receiving what he referred to as “tremendous” care last year.

Williams, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, is one of 265 veterans who do not qualify for dental benefits from the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center who received free treatment during the event last year.

When he saw that the School of Dentistry was planning the event, he jumped at the opportunity.

“I never knew what a real cleaning felt like. And then they pulled a tooth … I didn’t even know it was out,” he recalled. “Everybody was friendly and focused on those teams. I was impressed.”

Dental Mission Week is a joint effort involving volunteers from the Schools of Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, Health Related Professions and Medicine at UMMC along with dentists and staff from local practices. The goal is to provide much-needed dental care to underserved and uninsured adults and children.

“There’s a lot of people, a lot of hustle and bustle and activity, but they get the job done,” Williams said of the volunteers.

From Feb. 4 through Feb. 8, Mississippians will get the opportunity again at the third installment of the event, held each year since 2017. Those interested in participating can apply here.

“Dental Mission Week was born out of our students’ desire to serve the community. This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for the School of Dentistry and our partners to give back in the form of high quality, free dental care for those who might not be able to afford it otherwise,” Dr. David Felton, dean of the school and professor of care planning and restorative dentistry sciences, said. “Each year we have treated more patients than before, and I hope we will do the same in 2019 and for many years to follow.”

Kicking off Dental Mission Week each year is Give Kids a Smile Day, where hundreds of elementary-aged children from select Jackson Public Schools visit the dental school to get a free teeth cleaning and oral evaluation to take home. If necessary, a note requesting a follow-up visit is sent home with the child.

For many Johnson Elementary students last year, receiving dental care at GKAS was the first time they had their teeth cleaned.

More than 500 students from Johnson, two other local elementary schools and the Stewpot After-School Program received free dental care valued at over $100,000 during the 2018 event. During the rest of the week, 1,348 adults from across the state received 6,460 dental procedures worth about $1.05 million in uncompensated care.

The event is much needed in Mississippi, where more than half of residents who have not seen a dentist in the last 12 months gave cost as the main reason for the lapse, according to a survey from the American Dental Association.

Mississippi also has the second lowest patient-to-dentist ratio in the United States, according to the American Dental Association’s Health Policy Institute, making access to dental care a problem for some. There are 2,120 residents for every active, licensed dentist in the state, and in rural areas that number is even higher, according to the Mississippi State Board of Dental Examiners and U.S. Census data.

This year, the School of Dentistry at UMMC will host its 15th annual Give Kids a Smile Day on Monday, Feb. 4, with the rest of Dental Mission Week continuing through that week. Feb. 7 will be Veterans Day.

To take part in Dental Mission Week, potential patients are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. The application can be found online here.

Applications can also be picked up at the Center Stage Information Desk in the Jackson Medical Mall, Guest Services at UMMC’s Main Hospital and in the School of Dentistry. For more information, call 601-984-4200.

What is up with KF's obsession with dentistry lately?

Dental Board is interesting because:

1) it’s members represent dentists
2) it’s members have all largely resigned
3) after allegations of bribes arose
4) when the dental board changed a “FAQ” answer to read totally contradictory to its corresponding Rule (29)
5) the “misreading” of the rule would allow unqualified dentists to perform dental surgery and expose patients to serious harm.

There is a national movement to allow unqualified dentists to perform surgery and their agents are moving lots of money around to boards to try to sway their votes and allow it.

So KF is right on time imo

I support and am in favor of any possible way to spread dental care through an underserved community -- including cutting loose dental students with old fishing pliers.

Simple regular scaling, education, and monitoring are huge benefits to the community and it's not merely about cosmetics. Dental health care is a "marker" for other types of health care and monitoring. Catastrophic periodontal disease (common as all hell in lower socioeconomic strata) often is responsible for heart valve and other bacterial infections seemingly distant and unrelated to bad gums.

Spend a little more public health dollars for dental floss now and save lots more later for heart and other disease treatment.

Full disclosure: I was a dentist before I became a musician and died of the dread AIDS

KF, thanks for the announcement. I am blessed to be able to afford dental insurance for my children, but I have a neighbor who really needs this service. I will pass along the information.

Its is great to see the dental school doing something positive within their community. The Dental Board is an interesting topic as of late. Under the wing of their new executive director, they seem to have seized the chance to lock in their moneypot, by blocking any expansion of care in our state. This includes denial of hygienists any expansion of their duties, which are already among the most regulated in our country and trying to eliminate completely any corporate dentistry or school based mobile dentistry by handicapping their ability to function. They have no concern at all for the undeserved community. They care about their bottom line and will do anything to preserve it!

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.

Dr. Heddy Matthias and Lori Gregory will face off in the undercard dueling with dangling participles and other um, devices.
