Sid Salter: Bennie Thompson & President Trump Battle Over Border Security

Mississippi Second District U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson has been an unapologetic liberal on social issues for the whole of his long congressional career and that stance has certainly applied to issues surrounding immigration.

The election of President Donald Trump has done little to change that narrative. To be sure, Thompson has battled Trump over a number of his immigration initiatives, including the controversial Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and the so-called “Dreamers” or young undocumented immigrants with no legal status that DACA protects in the absence of the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act or DREAM.

But on Jan. 20 on the ABC News Sunday talking head show “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” Thompson remarkably talked in terms that offered Trump a significant opening in solving what Trump has claimed was the major obstacle to bringing the federal government shutdown to a more permanent close than the present three-week truce.

Speaking in measured tones to ABC co-anchor Martha Raddatz – the tenacious foreign policy journalist – Thompson said in response to a dogged line of questioning by Raddatz that indicated that the reporter saw the worth of a wall or barrier as a component in an overall border security solution.
Thompson parried craftily with Raddatz for several similar, repetitive questions, but each time she attempted to lead him back to a “yes or no” answer on the question of whether he thought Democrats would even negotiate about a border wall.

At one point, Raddatz went directly at Thompson over the issue when she said to the House Homeland Security Committee chairman: “Representative Thompson, you said in a statement that the president’s childish behavior is causing families to struggle to pay rent and put food on the dinner table, but if Democrats are unwilling to budge at all on the funding for the border wall, don’t you own some of the blame for the continued stalemate?”

Thompson replied: “Well, Martha, first of all, this is President Trump’s shutdown. Those 800,000 employees, they go to work because they have to, they’re not independently wealthy, and we should pay them. We should not be in this situation. Put the people back to work and let’s negotiate border security, but don’t hold those 800,000 employees hostage in this situation. Democrats are for border security, but we want to talk about it. We want to make sure that what we’re doing is the right thing. The notion that we have come from a wall to some other thing is moving it along, but we have to sit down and talk. The president, for whatever reason, likes to talk at people rather than to people and that’s not how you work things out.”

Raddatz took a second shot at the border wall question, asking: “Could you negotiate on a wall? That’s certainly the sticking point with President Trump.”

Thompson calmly said: “Well, we can negotiate on border security. And I think what we’re trying to get the president to understand is we’ll sit down and work this out. But, you know, we all are adults, and you can’t treat Democrats like something else. And so for the president as chair of the Homeland Security Committee, I’m saying we’ll sit down and we’ll talk about the situations and we’ll work through it. But under the present circumstances, it’s almost like a talking point rather than trying to get something established.”

Raddatz, like a dog on a bone, kept gnawing the on the border wall question with Thompson.

She asked in rapid fire succession: “Are you standing firm that you will not negotiate on a wall itself or is there wiggle room with that wall? So you wouldn’t rule out a wall?”

Thompson answered: “I would not rule out a wall in certain instances. Now, the notion that we can’t have barriers is just something that’s not true. But again, Martha, you have to have a plan. And the plan that the president initially started with is not where he is now. And so we don’t know where he will be tomorrow. But clearly Democrats are for border security, but we’re not for this constantly moving the ball just for a talking point. Mr. President, Democrats will work with you, but you can’t pick what Democrats you’ll work with. We have picked our leaders and you have to work with our leaders. And I encourage you to do that.”

Thompson is now a serious player on the final outcome of Trump’s border wall. Mississippians, unfortunately, are not as cognizant of that notion as is the national media and the rest of the players on Capitol Hill. Thompson is in a position to substantially negotiate the future of both U.S. border security generally and Trump’s wall specifically.

Thompson is a piece of shit racist.

He is nothing more than a Hinds County thug filling his pockets up, while acting like something he is not: Intelligent.

Hates white people.

That's hilarious.

Wrong, Sid! Thompson is NOT in a position to negotiate. He may be in a 'position', but he has no skills other than supervising the frying of catfish, posturing for more and continued entitlement programs in the Mississippi Delta and mouthing this comical 'we in charge' mantra. He could not 'negotiate' his way out of Medgar Evers Airport without telling him, "Sir, that's your flight".

If this 'negotiation' were a game of checkers, Thompson could not move two pieces off the front row without asking Pelosi and Schumer to tell him what to do next.

I have wanted better border security and immigration reform since before 9?11.

All our borders need improve security, not just our southern one.

I'm FOR a combination of effective barriers, effective scrutiny of goods and persons entering and improved surveillance and response time.

Tens of billions of tax dollars have been spent wasted since 9/11 on political "spoils" and that is especially true in the past 2 years.

READ instead of letting someone else feed you political garbage.

We should all demand that Rep Thompson clean up this mess and offer a specific plan of action that doesn't allow Homeland Security or INS or the Border Patrol or any other agency to play politics with our national security.

I'd support a law that made it treasonous to knowingly misrepresent the effectiveness ,quality of services , value and quality of equipment and materials, and competence of personnel in contracts on contracts that affect our national security and defense.

Bennie is absolutely for negotiations. Ongoing negotiations. Ongoing and ongoing and ongoing. At least until a Democrat is back in the White House. Then they might even build a wall. But it'll cost a lot more than 5 billion dollars. In the meantime Bennie's constituency of poor and displaced people continues to grow. A true win-win for the party outside the White House.

The public I believe just has not had the matter of border security presented to them properly. I mean if there is a breech or crack in border security, oh lets say like PRIOR TO 911, wouldn't or shouldn't we all be concerned with putting into place safeguards to prevent another 911-like catastrophe? People we didn't see it coming. Isn't there a lesson here to be learned? We've alerted the entire world now that we are slack or lacking in border security. "Hey here is your opportunity terrorists to enter our country". Why take a chance people? This is a different world today. Despite personal failings, Trump is a Patriot. I'm sorry if you don't see it that way. Leaders (Trump/Congress) are required to protect and safeguard our Union. Another 911, airborne virus, drugs, WOMD, smuggled through our remote borders will be on the Democrats heads.

Bennie has held that Congressional seat since 1993. I would like for him to list three things he has accomplished in all those years that benefit the residents of the district.

I don't believe he can.

Why did the GOP caucus appoint Congressman Guest to serve on the House Homeland Security Committee? It seems unusual to have two members from a small state serve on the same committee.

I'm just glad all of the local restaurants that seem to have kitchen staff full of Hispanics are following immigration laws. Especially that popular Chinese restaurant with the grocery store.

I'm also glad all of the meat packing plants, construction companies, and lawn care and roadside clean up contractors are following the law as well.

And I'm very glad that our elected officials in the State legislature only take campaign contributions from companies who only hire legal immigrants.

Because as long as everyone is following the law that wall is going to work perfectly.

The party of ‘fiscal responsibility’ just can’t wait to dish out more government contracts for questionable stuff. Heaven forbid we get some solid information on this wall. What was released via FOIA requests was pretty damning.

You people that keep on referencing 9/11 don’t seem to have the slightest clue as to the extent of the financial rape that took place afterwards. They don’t care about your security. They want to rape and pillage the treasury.

9:11 The true issue on the southern border has to do with the poor and unwanted people who take advantage of our need for cheap labor and complacent attitudes about security. Over the the years both parties have made use of these people for their own selfish purposes without regard for the consequences of uncontrolled migration. Concern with terrorists is a good political red herring but means little or nothing to the politicians. Especially wags like Thompson and Trump. If terrorists were determined they might find the Canadian border or our industrial ports an easier entry than the Mexican border. (From Vancouver to Windsor you could fly the Hindenburg over America with a hydrogen bomb strapped to it, or strap it to your bicycle) But we love Canada and they wouldn't do that.

Their racial makeup and the fact that these people bring desperate needs and little or no skills to the table makes them undesireable as permanent residents except for bosses like Thompson who love more dependents no matter what they do to the economy. Trump knows there's enough cheap labor already here, and he has no use for any more of these latino types anyway but even he recognizes the political correctness of "securing our borders from terrorists". It makes good headlines. Like the "War on Drugs". Terrorists and drug dealers laugh.

While I am not a Bennie Thompson fan, Donald Trump is an even bigger embarrassment. There is no crisis at the southern border. The crisis is that Trump promised his mindless base a beautiful wall that Mexico would pay for. That, of course, was one of many Trump lies. In addition, a wall is not needed to stop drugs or terrorists, because drugs and terrorists do not enter the country at open borders. They enter at airports and legal ports of entry. Trump’s own administration and the intelligence community have confirmed all of these facts. The notion that all Democrats are for “open borders” is another Trump lie. In fact, for many years the a Democrats in Congress have voted for billions of dollars for border security, including some barriers. If a security expert with no political agenda recommends additional barriers in particularly vulnerable areas, I would support funding that if it were coupled with more funding for personnel, monitoring, detection, etc. Otherwise we should spend our tax dollars on real needs like infrastructure, the military, access to college, and health care. And we should get rid of Trump and Pence In 2020.

12:05 I agree with you that Trump is an embarrassment and at least a liar. But I disagree that there is no crisis at the southern border. In fact there has been a crisis for many years and through administrations, both Republican and Democrat. To allow millions, yes millions, of desperate people into a country without knowledge of their intentions, their health status, or their ability to earn a living is a crisis. That is, unless you have unlimited funds and resources. I suppose we can just continue on the present path until we find out if our resources are truly unlimited. When that time comes we can declare a CRISIS. Right?

I'm a Bennie Thompson fan. He is a racist dope, but at least he is not a Marxist racist dope. When Bennie retires Baby Chok will take his place. Then we will have Baby Chok and Ocasio-Cortez in the House.

Then again, if Bennie can live 12 more years, it becomes a moot point since AOC says the world will end in 2031.

@12:49 there is no data to support your claim that millions of illegal aliens are crossing the Southern border. In fact, there are no statistics re illegal crossings, so the Department of Homeland Security uses border apprehensions to assess trends. The number of apprehensions
at the Southern border has decreased from 1.64 million in 2000 to 396,579 in 2018 or a decrease of 76%. Don’t let Trump’s lies make a liar out of you. Stick to the facts. There is no crisis and no need to spend $5.7 billion on a wall.

1:32...I will kiss your ass on the courthouse lawn if you can name one thing the 'black people' in Thompson's district have or ARE asking for that he has not delivered.

Under-represented? That's a laugh. He has delivered to the black population exactly what they want and exactly why they have reelected him a dozen times - continued entitlements, no mandate for job readiness, no job-search requirement in order to receive benefits, a guarantee of perpetual democrat plantation mentality and a large fish fry every couple of years with free beer.

Anonymous said...

I'll concede that 3:21 knows all about writing moronic posts. I have reservations about the "oxy" part.

Anonymous said...

5:08 Black people in his district have asked for full funding (at least under MAEP)for public education, additional funding for higher and vocational education and training, medicaid expansion (as other states have done), equitable funding for rural health care, better health care facilities, expansion of child support services, full restoration of voting rights for persons who have completed felony sentences, equitable sentencing reform, economic development in his district to provide good paying jobs and a state flag we don't have to be ashamed of. Just for starters. Pucker up buttercup!

The crap you name was not the result of any of Bennie's efforts. His district remains the poorest in the nation, like when he took office. The Caucasians in the district had most of the money and they still have most of the money. Bennie gets elected because the Black population was so beaten down and abused by the white minority for a few hundred years that they will not trust anything remotely resembling the racist. They'd rather suffer under Bennie.

8:56 - There you go with your racist BS. Let me know when you have proof of ONE industrial development initiative Thompson has brought to his district in 26 years. And don't count grant money for all the community action agencies where the directors drive Mercedes and BMWs.

The things you list are all either entitlements or closely related to entitlements. Did you even realize that? With these exceptions: 'The people' of District 2 don't give a whit about fully funding MAEP. Other than a handful of teachers up there who think they would benefit, 'the people' don't even know what it means. 'Sentencing reform and restoration of voting rights'? The only ones who want that are black folk who want their convicted, felonious relatives to help keep electing people like Thompson.

You made up that entire list based on your liberal political and social leanings.

"The Caucasians had most of the money and still do." Whose fault is that? Black folk, Negroes as Kim Wade calls them, African Americans - are the only group that ever inhabited the delta who still comfortably reside in a state of liberal, Democrat-based plantation existence. Prove me wrong.

The groups that pulled themselves up through struggle, discrimination, hard times and mistreatment and denial of rights in that region and became self-sufficient contributors include: Jews, Italians, Chinese, Syrians, Sicilians, Mexicans, Lebanese, Germans and Native Americans. Why are blacks the ONLY group to still wallow in entitlement and victimization? Bennie is one reason for that.

Gerrymandering us usually a bitch. Unless you're entitled and like the plantation.

5:30 - 'You People' used to call white people racist. When that stopped working, you started calling white people 'deniers of rights'. When that couldn't be supported you resorted to 'haters'. At the end of the day, what you find disagreement with is 'realists', those who can clearly visualize and identify a problem.

You don't have that skill. Where were you on the day God passed out that gene? Stop wallowing in the misery of entitlement and victimization and blaming others. Like so many of you, it won't work.

Damn, the hate against Bennie is strong here.

First, I bet none of the commentators here actually live in Bennie's district. It's not possible because the 2nd district still doesn't have internet yet (joke).

Second, There are these things called "elections." If you hate the man soooo much, mobilize some opposition and vote him out. If you don't have the energy for that, then you ought to quit your whining about what you think Bennie is every time his name comes up.

Meanwhile, the President of the United States is having private meetings with Putin and publicly berating the head of our intel agencies, and jeopardizing long-established relations with NATO and other alliances. He's literally compromising our National security, and your simple asses are worried about Bennie.

Tell me we don't live in racist country...!

Anonymous said...

1:57 Damn, you are impossible. I think 8:56 was answering 5:08 and making the point that Bennie does not give the Black people of his district everything they ask for. For your information, not that it does any good, all Black people do not ask for or want the same things. A racist like yourself cannot understand that Black people like all the other ethnic groups you name, work, play, fight, pay taxes, don't pay taxes, go to school, don't go to school, advance, retreat, be smart, be dumb, live and die just like your sorry ass. There are Negroes, as you or Kim call them, (I'll bet you have another name) who have accomplished far more than you ever will and there are some who haven't. When a Black man becomes president or congressman you certainly don't talk about Blacks as a group accomplishing anything do you? But when you see a Black person in trouble you can say Black people as a group are wallowing in entitlement and victimization. Hey, look around and check out what you are wallowing in!

This thread is the poster for how politics has distracted our citizens with nonsense.
Most of you have made this about Bennie vs Trump as personalities, members of a political party and of a racial group.

I would suggest you bother to get actual government facts on immigration via our southern border over the last 2 decades. Get facts on how drugs and human traffickers get into our country. Get facts about the terrain. Get facts about what is and isn't effective and what technology could be helpful and is not in use or inadequately provided. Get facts about infrastructure problems that keep our border patrol from arriving quickly.

The Brookings Institute has done an informative study.

But, that does require you to bother to read enough to know anything relevant about the subject. Better you continue to let talking heads on cable news with high school degrees or degrees that gave them zero expertise on subject tell you what to think. Whatever you do, don't talk to an engineer or security expert who might burst your bubble.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.
