A woman was shot and killed Thursday while sitting at a traffic light in Jackson. Police are searching the shooter. (KF: Does this mean they caught him and are frisking him? Or did the reporter forget to include "for"?)
According to the Jackson Police Department, Chelsie Lynn Kirschten, 23, and an unidentified passenger were stopped at an intersection near Fortification and State Street Thursday night, waiting for the traffic light to change.
Kirschten was driving a white Pontiac G6 and the unidentified passenger was in the front passenger seat.
A man wearing dark clothing and carrying a silver handgun approached the driver's side if the vehicle. He fired a single into the driver's side window, hitting Kirschten in the upper back. She was pronounced dead on scene. (That's it? Not exactly the article to be using Game of Thrones references unless this is an incomplete description)
The suspect fled on foot. A motive is unknown.
Anyone with information is asked to call JPD at 601-960-1234 or 601-355-8477. Kirschten's death is Jackson's 37th homicide investigation for 2017.
The Jackson Police Department is holding a press conference about the incident at 9 a.m. Friday.

Chelsie Lynn Kirschten, 23, was at the intersection of Fortification and State streets along with a passenger just before midnight when police said a man came up to the driver's side of the car and shot Kirschten in the back and ran away.
Police said the shooting appears to be random.
“We’re still in the preliminary stages. We’re not sure if they know one another or if there is any type of affiliation, but based on preliminary indications, this just seems to be possibly an individual just walked up to the vehicle and fired a shot,” Cmdr. Tyree Jones said.
Kirschten drove down the street after she was shot, police said. Her car came to a stop at Fortification Street near the Interstate 55 exit. She died at the scene, police said.

During the course of the investigation, it was learned that the victim and a front seat passenger were stationary at the intersection of Fortification St. near State St. waiting for the traffic signal to change, when an unidentified black male subject approached the vehicle from the driver side armed with a silver handgun. The suspect, wearing dark colored clothing, fired a single gunshot through the front driver side window of the vehicle striking the victim and he fled on foot. The vehicle continued to travel eastbound on Fortification St. and came to a final rest near the interstate. The motive for the shooting has not been determined at this time. This is the 37th homicide investigation for 2017.

Bar none, Jackson has some of the worst editors anywhere. (I'm no grammar expert, but I know shitty writing when I see it)
News stories are rife with grammatical errors, incomplete sentences, and paragraphs that make absolutely no sense. The art of journalism is lost on reporters who want to be first to the story, rather than reporting accurately and including all of the facts necessary to keep the public informed and aware.
Further, it is impossible for the public to give accurate and useful information to the police if the media reports don't include critical information (such as the race of the shooter). I know for a fact that several media outlets have changed their style books to include/exclude certain facts which could be considered inflammatory; but what is more inflammatory to me is that if I relied solely on the media, I'd have no idea who to be on the lookout for. This particular situation would be different if the victim was alone and there were no witnesses, but in this case the police have the benefit of an eye witness who was able to provide what seems like some pretty good information.
It is irresponsible for the media not to include ALL of the information necessary in their story.
Next time this reporter might want to employ her crack investigative skills to nailing down the specific time the crime happened. Not printing it is like leaving the date off a birthday invitation.
Has anyone been able to see the JPD press conference that was supposed to happen at 9:00? I can't find a link to it or to a video of it anywhere - not on the Clarion Ledger site or any of the tv stations' sites. And, yes, the grammar and writing are horrific and embarrassing.

9:57 is wrong. Assuming his 52% number is correct the 13% number most certainly is not. 13% of the population is black and most black folks (like most white folks) don't murder people. It is mostly males, now we are down to roughly 6.5%, between the ages of 15 to 40, most likely down to around 3 or 4% now, that are usually at a lower income level, now we are probably close to 2 or 3%. So no, 13% is not responsible for 52% of murders. More like 3% is responsible for 52% of murders. Don't blame black folks, blame the criminal element that is in Jackson, MS consisting of a small percentage of the population. The same small group that keeps getting caught by JPD over and over again and released by judges that seen to hate their community.

Actually, since the overwhelming majority of homicides committed by blacks OR whites are within the ages of 16-35, then the disparity percentage of those committing the crimes goes down even MORE.
If African-Americans comprise roughly 12-13% of the U.S. national population, then 6.0-6.5% are male. But only about 3% or so are black males between the ages of 16-35, or even less. Not a lot of murders being committed by 8 year olds or 72 year olds, of any race.

In 1989 or 1990 there was a Shell station where the Walgreens currently sits.
In 1989 or 1990 a female Millssps student was shot multiple times (like 5-6 times) while at the Shell station.
She was able to avoid being murdered by climbing a wooden fence which shielded her from the gun fire.
This type behavior is not unique in Jackson nor is it the end of the world as we know it.
She was a beautiful young lady. What a waste. I hope the murderer is caught and promptly dealt with.

There are mountains of research about gangs, all gangs and specific gangs.
The FBI is a good resource for summaries on how gangs are structured and what their initiation rites are.
If you'd stop and think, you'd realize that even a gang wants to keep a new "employee" and doesn't want the cops looking at them and their membership. They'd also need to test loyalty to make sure a new member , if caught. won't snitch. Would they trust the "new guy" most?
And, when they kill , it's to get rid of people who might rat them out or competition, not strangers. They just don't care about collateral damage or are willing to terrorize someone by hurting or killing loved ones.
All the " gang initiation" myths are not cautions by named law enforcement than the quotes of political stuff by celebrities by name that they never said. Check facts before you believe what some misinformed friend or email or website or post says.

It might save lives since the citizens of Jackson now can kill all of those who do not live or work in the area.

Looks like another man was caught driving in Jackson in an area he was not allowed to drive.

The passenger in the car will soon crack, no pun intended, if she hasn't already. The shooter was in the car when they stopped at the red light. When he's located, his prints will match those all over the back seat area of the vehicle.
Of course Kingfish will report soon that he has it on good authority that nobody else was in the car.
