Arrest made in Fortification Street murder. JPD looking for suspect.

Update #3: Judge Clay set bond for Dixon at $1 million.

Update #2: Dixon surrendered.

Update: Jackson Municipal Court Judge Ali Shamsid-deen gave Coats a $200,000 bond.

JPD issued the following press release:

On Thursday, August 17, 2017, at approx. 11:48 PM, Jackson Police Officers responded to the area of Fortification St. near I-55 regarding a shooting. Upon officers’ arrival, it was learned that a white female, later identified as Chelsie Lynn Kirschten-23, had been shot while in the driver seat of a white Pontiac G6. She suffered a single gunshot wound to the upper back and was pronounced deceased on scene.

During the course of the investigation, it was learned that the victim and a front seat passenger were stationary at the intersection of Fortification St. near State St. waiting for the traffic signal to change, when an unidentified black male subject approached the vehicle from the driver side armed with a silver handgun. The suspect, wearing dark colored clothing, fired a single gunshot through the front driver side window of the vehicle striking the victim and he fled on foot. The vehicle continued to travel eastbound on Fortification St. and came to a final rest near the interstate. The motive for the shooting has not been determined at this time. This is the 37th homicide investigation for 2017.

Robbery/Homicide Detectives developed Nicholas Coats-21 as a suspect in this investigation. Subsequently, he was arrested on August 28th and charged with Murder. Lidarius Dixon-19 was also developed as a suspect in this investigation. He was later identified and charged with murder and shooting in an occupied vehicle. He is not in custody.

Anyone with any information regarding the whereabouts of Lidarius Dixon is urged to contact the Jackson Police Department at 601-960-1234 or 601-355-TIPS (8477).

And a lot of people in the other threads said there was no black man with a silver gun. I haven't seen the gun but Coats is a black man.

Anonymous said...

Well, he matches the description of the assailant.

I just want to know why? Mistaken identity? Why? What propelled you to walk up to the car and shoot a person and just walk away?

Anonymous said...

Check out both on Facebook....look at the hands.

Anonymous said...

Well, someone posted on an earlier thread that the shot may have been an accidental discharge. Shooter unfamiliar with the gun had the safety thumbed off with his finger in the trigger guard when he tapped on the window to rob them, and accidentally pressed the bang switch. Plausible, I suppose. I guess we'll see what the suspect has to say in his defense.

$200,000 bond.

Anonymous said...

He was later identified and charged with murder and shooting in an occupied vehicle. He is not in custody.

WHAT!!!!!! Surely I am reading this wrong....

Anonymous said...

So coats was an active blood. Dixon was earning his colors. Hopefully this gets charged as a hate crime, but we all know that won't happen.

Anonymous said...

"developed as a suspect . . ." Which presumably means one of them bragged then somebody snitched. Great work by JPD if true.

Anonymous said...

Anyone who thinks this was an accidental discharge that happened when the killer tapped on the window with the gun should take a toy gun out to their car and tap on the window. They would learn why their idea is a load of bullshit. If anyone else would give it a minute of thought they would immediately see why.

Anonymous said...

It's Hinds County People.... this guy won't do any time either. They need to put a fence up and let them kill each other and rid themselves of the entire problem

Anonymous said...

When you walk out of the house looking for trouble, it will easily find you - especially when you have a gun.

Get a job, leave the crime along, make your own way. God blesses the child that has his own.

It doesn't get any simpler than that.

Anonymous said...

When is the mayor holding a press conference on the capture of this killer?

Anonymous said...

A toy gun? What the hell are you talking about?

Safety off, light trigger pull, nervous gunman - could've happened. It's a hell of a lot more plausible than some the theories I've heard posited in earlier threads.

Justice for Tyrion said...

Its a big difference in criminal charges if this young man had an accidental discharge while tapping on the window to rob these people. Based on my analysis of the evidence, Mr. Coats unintentionally discharged a round through the window and then panicked and fled.

The Judge should have given him no bond. The Judge's in Jackson are a joke...letting people off with a warning or some class for hitting their spouses or dismissing DUI's against people who caused accidents! The city is a joke. I feel sorry for anyone who works there or who has to live there. Its not safe at all. Great for my clients and I, but terrible for the city as a whole.

Anonymous said...

12:51, I will type slow so you can follow.
1. Hold the gun in your hand.
2. Go to your car.
3. Tap on the window with the gun.
4. Notice where the gun is pointing.

JPD ought to be congratulated. I know this is tough for all you in Stankin County to do, but it is true. The cops did a good job. I believe they were putting together a case wherein the girl was followed from George Street to the light where she was murdered by this guy. They have been doing some real detective work, interviewing people and checking surveillance cams in the area.
It is important to remember that the cops in Jackson are not the problem. The problem is that the lawyers in the public defender's office have the best legal minds in the courthouse.

Anonymous said...

If I were a betting man I'd wager there are plenty of photos of these two gents available via social media demonstrating they aren't novices when it comes to handling firearms.

Anonymous said...

Hey 1:16, if I'm tapping with the muzzle, then it's pointed directly inside the car. What are you tapping with - the butt?

Anonymous said...

I doubt if these pistoleros get out to the range very often, and they're likely handling stolen gats anyway - the safe operation of which may be beyond their range of expertise.

Anonymous said...

The muzzle is pointed upward. I'm now questioning the folks who don't want their murderin' kin to go to the pokie.

Anonymous said...

Coats has a little person following in his steps https://ibb.co/d2y3Rk

Anonymous said...

If you are tapping on a window with a loading gun and intend to rob, then any discharge of the gun is by default intentional. There is no such thing as: "I didn't intend to kill nobody. I just intended to rob them with a loaded gun and my finger on the trigger."

Anonymous said...

1:02 No Justice
Bottom line, one person is dead and many lives are now upside down!
$200,000 bond is unspeakable!

Anonymous said...

2nd suspect surrendered to JPD.

Anonymous said...

The accidental discharge theory may explain how the MURDER happened, but it shouldn't be an excuse for this "accidental discharge" of a human being to walk free.

Anonymous said...

Who said he shouldn't go to jail? Nothing I've read here indicates that anyone thinks he should walk free.

Anonymous said...

Shamsiddeen was Daddy Choks law partner

Anonymous said...

@ August 29, 2017 at 3:03 PM

I agree. You go out with a loaded pistol and then you kill somebody, thats on you. Now deal with the consequences.

Anonymous said...

I'm with Justice for Tyrone. I say we all just call this an unfortunate mistake and move on. He only meant to rob. He didn't intend to shoot anyone with the loaded gun and his finger on the trigger.

Anonymous said...

2:44 is no doubt right - "accidental discharge" is probably a term more germane to the shooting range, and is not going to cut any mustard under the law.

Anonymous said...

Praise God! Not it is fryin time!

Anonymous said...

How about NO BOND

Anonymous said...

All these theories about 'accidential discharge', random, and robbery are bullshit. There is nothing random about this incident. Second participant turned himself in this afternoon - where did that 'second participant' come from in any of the above stories.

Why does the passenger keep changing her story with the cops? Reckon she really can't remember or just realizes that the first cover-up doesn't fly?

Sit back, wait and watch. JPD has this under control, as shown by this arrest and the second surrender. The question is who all is guilty - the killer, the passenger, the dealer? How many and for what offenses? We'll all know soon.

Anonymous said...

Just read the CL after Dixon turned himself in -- "Further suspects and arrests are possible, Vance said. I would not take that completely off the table." So 2 down....how many to go?

Anonymous said...

Good Work JPD...!!!

Anonymous said...

Thank you JPD

I was just at one Block from
That corner on Fortification at West and it is a damn rough looking spot.

Prob 50 dudes and 500" of pecker

Anonymous said...

Who said the passenger changed her story?
Keep it up, 4:57, with your lurid speculations.

Anonymous said...

Lee Vance could be sheriff or Mayor. Good guy

Anonymous said...

An accidental discharge could hardly be a defense if committed during an attempted robbery.

Anonymous said...

Ahem, first year criminal law (at least for students at law schools above the level of Tier 4): Intent may be inferred from the recklessness of the underlying act.

Anonymous said...

If the intent was robbery and the result was this girl's death during the robbery attempt, won't these guys be facing a capital murder charge?

PittPanther said...

Thanks to 5:44pm's comment, all of your wives might be a little late getting home tonight. Have to do a drive by at fortification and west...

Anonymous said...

Who says the intent was robbery? More than likely the intent was just plain cold blooded murder. After all, this is Jackson.

Anonymous said...

If it was an accident. Why did he run from the law?

Anonymous said...

to all you punk ass wannabe cops and lawyers in madison and rankin county......... JPD Does a damn good job ... you can take your asses back home to momma

Anonymous said...

to all you punk whiners in rankin and madison....... your beloved cops solve a lot of crimes only because they manufacture the crime in the first place. think about that the next time you go through a road block

Anonymous said...

What happened to the theory that the shooter was in the car at some point?

Anonymous said...

The word "allegedly" has been left out of all these comments. Also, a lot of assumptions are being made. Let's wait at least until the preliminary hearing before we all become judge and jury. It's sad, but these guys are entitled to bond. However, at $200,000, one would need approximately $22,000 cash to pay a bondsman. I couldn't pay it, and I have a pretty decent job.

Anonymous said...

This does not seem like a random shooting. It smells like a drug deal gone bad.

Anonymous said...

Clarion Ledger just hit the driveway. Top story at banner of page 1 is state flag followed by a story on Philip Gunn's chief of staff. Off to the lower left margin is a story about the two charged in this shooting. Nothing much to see here boyz and gurls.

Anonymous said...

'What happened to the theory that the shooter was in the car at some point?'

Nothing. It's still out there. Along with your theory that the girls were up to no good and had no business there at that hour.

That's the thing about theories. In the absence of facts, the tend to emerge. And you can bet your Junior-Columbo-Investigator-Card the POleece entertained the possibility that the perp(s) had been in the car.

Good job by Chief Vance and JPD. Regarding the $22k for bond, maybe a lot for the average individual but "if" these individuals were involved in organized crime...as in gang related activity, not that much money for an organization. The state and/or Feds need to step in and remove these judges. The Chief can do his job but it appears judges and the D.A.'s office continue to undermine JPD's efforts. Fix the court system and give JPD additional funds to help them stay competitive with the other departments who are continually running want ads trying to recruit our officers in the area.

I never knew there were so many psychics in MS that seem to know exactly what happened and how it happened before evidence is presented in court.
You know this is the shooter rather than an accomplice and exactly how it went down and why.
Ironic that those who know nothing are criticizing those who also know nothing. It's an argument between those who try to assume the best and those who assume the worst.
Great...just great...

Anonymous said...

Tip of the hat to JPD and Crime Stoppers. Great job, guys. This could have been a tough one to solve.

I love to read the posts on here from all the ballistics experts who always know exactly why the bullet went where it did.

Anonymous said...

Yes, this is an assumption on my part, i.e. that drugs were involved in this murder.
I am a drug addict. I am approaching (G-d willing) thirty two years since my last drink or mood altering drug. Why not legalize pot, and various opiates? Just pull up a dump truck on designated corners and make a big mound with a sign that says "FREE, take as much as you like?" When the pile disappears send another truck full. Many of our drug related problems would be over in six months. The users would die of starvation.

Regards to Chief Vance and JPD Detectives for catching up with these perps.

to 5:36am .... hey drama queen/ king , i hate to pop you balloon , but there is no organized crime such as the mob in mississippi. you have been watching too much television . these are nothing but street punk thugs and there is nothing organized about them. there is not enough money in this 3nd world backwater called mississippi to attract organized crime.

Anonymous said...

10:31, you sound miserable. What is it that attracted you to our "3nd" world backwater? Maybe you should find somewhere better to bless with your presence?

A Madison woman started a GoFundMe account & the family asked her to take it down. They told her the burial expenses have been covered, so they don't want any other solicitations in her name. The woman refused. She sounds like a nutcase saying she doesn't need anyone's approval for this but the campaign claims to be for medical and burial expenses. She's also saying it's to help the family, but they've said no. She died at the scene, so not sure what she's referring to. When the family warned of this bogus account on FB, she blocked them, including the victim's mother. RED FLAG!!! Disgusting people in the world trying to profit off of a death. I hate gofundme for this reason.

to 11:45am......10:31 here... FYI I don't live in the third world backwater called mississippi, but i did at one time many years ago. its really hilarious to see how important you think your backwater is. organized crime is attracted only to money. the only thing mississippi has is religious and political BS.

@9:55
There's plenty of organized crime in Mississippi,do some research.

Whoever said this guy is a Blood doesn't live in Mississippi nor the Jackson metro.

Anonymous said...

9:55, the fact you left is proof enough there's hope for MS. I feel important just knowing you're still concerned enough to follow our local news.

Anonymous said...

to 9:55.... tell me about organized crime here! is it one of the 5 families, ? the ban or gambinos?the chicago outfit, maybe?.. leftovers from carlos marchello? santo trafficante from tampa florida name em!!! crips and bloods are hardly organized beyond having member nicknames like cool-aid or cornflake. the closest thing you got to organized crime in this cotton field is the corrupt republican party that runs this place. you better wetter think the whole world revolves around mississippi. i got news for you.

Coats is not a gang kid. Word on the street is that Coats was offered some money to drive Dixon to Walgreens to "sell some dope to a white girl" and that Dixon and a kid named Red were the passengers. They says Coats and Red stayed in the car and when they heard the gunshot, the took off and left Dixon. Coats turned his self in to "clear his name" and got arrested anyway. He gave up Dixon and Red. Dixon turned himself in and said that Coats was the shooter and he was the driver. Red is still on the loose.

People in the neighboorhood are saying that Dixon was handed some wadded up cash for some coke and when he counted it, it were short. That's why the girls took off and why he chased them and shot the girl trying to get his money back.

No gang initiation. Not random. Drug sale gone bad.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. This is definitely a Beaver production.
