Epps sentencing delayed, Cecil wants to fight. $800 million?

Defendants Cecil McCrory and Chris Epps showed up in U.S. District Court this morning for sentencing in the MDOC scandal.  However, McCrory told the court he wants to withdraw his guilty plea and go to trial.  The court delayed Epps' sentencing until July 18.  Mr. McCrory was scheduled to be sentenced on June 9.

Prosecutors said they discovered Epps cost the state more than $800 million in illegal contracts.  They previously estimated the amount to be $300 million.  Prosecutors said they were reviewing the case and want to subpoena 16 contractors (Are Reddix and Jenkins puckering?). Epps faces a prison term of 23 years or less and can be fined up to $750,000.  Needless to say, the attorneys for Epps and McCrory were not too happy with the claim that Epps directed $800 million in contracts in his pay to play scheme. Colette argued the damages were the $1.4 million that Epps received in bribes while McCrory attorney Carlos Tanner called the claim "outrageous".

It really don't matter as they both will not have to pay. McCrory has been crooked so long that he thinks he is allowed that privilege.

McCrory Defense: I'm not as big a crook as you say I am.

The corollary to that is: I can't even get crook right.

McCrory may not have a lot of litigation risk vs. a guilty plea with a govt. recommendation at his age. take that aspect away, however, and he is making a very foolish decision to go to trial.

Would like to see Mr Epps campaign donations over the years. We will never know the thousands of dollars that were handed over in brown paper bags. This whole scam may be higher than Mr Epps.

Legal question??

If McCrory delays sentencing by deciding to go to trial, won't this just give him more time at home until the trial?

Can he reverse his plea reversal again and plead guilty right before trial?

The damages to the state are the amount of the bribe?

I thought the bribe paid to the person(s)steering or rigging the contract was somewhat like a unearned commission, being some percentage of the contract being steered to the bribe payer.

What utter bullshit.

Are they in jail now? Seems the judge could have sentenced them to something pending a final review.

Anonymous said...

No judge is going to lock them up unless forced to. Does anyone really think these were the only two involved?

Epps was not an elected official and had no "campaign donations". dubmass, pay attention.

5:40, The comment at 2:48 is talking about which politicians Epps was giving money to disguised as campaign donations when in reality the money given for other reasons.I agree. This could be a very long list, especially at the local county level, in an attempt to get access to the county jail services.

Reddix? How long will it take he had to be deeply involved with Epps, Martin, and SIMMONS....... But who is Jenkins?

For all of you people still schmoozing over Epps being an affable, lovable, kind and benevolent human Bean who was a pleasure to be associated with....we are now talking almost a Billion Damned Dollars. Y'all make me sick. Like the mommas who say, "My boy might rob yo ass but he ain't gone shoot yo ass. He a good boy."

Jenkins is Harvey Johnson's slimy college roommate. He came here from Atlanta and mopped up with all the black minority stuff. His first name is Andrew. He has been sucking off the Jackson teat for YEARS simply because he is black. I hope they focus on that slimy SOB.

Who are "all of you people still schmoozing over Epps being an affable..."? Who, on this thread has said anything like what you describe? Are THE VOICES (the ones in your head) saying these things? I don't see any Epps supporters here.

And you are using the word 'schmoozing' incorrectly. It's a Yiddish word, and the definition can be looked-up, online.

It seem to me, most of the 99% of the people who have responded to this story about Epps & McCrory, really don't know the facts, Y'all are shooting off the hip and mouths from what y'all have read or been told by the TV stations.
Now here is a question for y'all;;;; If your boss came to you, or you had a contract with a company, and the person; (your boss) said if you want to keep your job or contract, but it is going to cost you "X" number of dollars a month, or you will be without a job or a contract; What would you do????
There about 15 to 20 more people involved in this, why have they not been brought in? Let's face the facts; Epps was extorting all these people, as I am sure the fact will come out.

Why didn't Jim Hood catch these guy? Why does it take the Feds to do the hard stuff? So many questions.

Because Stacey's RV won't fit but about 12 fatcats?

Our judges would have also accepted "Because they are all Democrats"

7:42 - The entire population doesn't read this blog or post to it. There are many out there, particularly current and former DOC employees who literally think the man walks on water. They'll never really believe he's a crook and a traitor and a man who conned and hurt them. And the few who believe it quickly came to his rescue and claimed 'he still a good boy'.

Plenty of doc employees knew about Epps for years but no one could do anything about it. So when is the FBI going to get the other employees that are part of this mess?

Anonymous said...

The FBI does not really even want the two they have right now. McCrory has already been trying to trade the names for his own release. He has already given several names. Just give the people a little time to forget about it, and they will forget very soon. The two they have will be forgiven.

How does former Chairman Malone get a pass on this? He was charging the House such high travel expenses for keeping an eye on MDOC.

Shakedown said...

Didn't Malone resign within a month of this shit hitting the fan?

Naw Judge, Yuck said...

The two should have been tried separately to begin with. Then we wouldn't have this charade. And McRory's attorney should be admonished for perpetrating this charade on the court when he could have withdrawn the plea without all this drama and expense. Surprised the judge did not react to this circus.

I'm disappointed that none of the for-profit prison operators to date have been cited as providing the bribes. Compared to those contracts ($800 million?) the others are pissant. For instance, Cornell Companies/Corrections, was bribing people for years (i.e. Leonidas Young), making illegal campaign contributions (Tom DeLay), but never was prosecuted. They were running Walnut Grove like it was a gulag. They even were illegally getting paid millions in school lunch money from the Department of Agriculture (because most of the meals charged were for prisoners too old to qualify). GEO continued these practices. McCrory has admitted he was paid millions for his dubious services, but we don't know how much the operators paid.

This is such a mess. The current commissioner has all of Epps people running the agency. Nothing has changed. Its still "business as usual" Chris Epps style.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
