MSU black students demand safe space

The Coalition of Black Students presented a list of demands to the administration of Mississippi State University. The group also held a sit-in at Lee Hall yesterday and demanded that the administration stop flying the Mississippi state flag.   The demands and a video of the event are posted below.

Kingfish note: Safe space? Check out Section 6 of the demands.

6) Safe space for Black students on campus
• Safe space for Black students on campus that are away from the daily stresses of
navigating white spaces and the work/responsibilities associated with the HCDC office.
This space can either be an expansion of the HCDC office or an entirely different space
created on campus.
• Other schools provide these spaces for their students:
o E.g.: Malcom X Lounge UT Austin
• This space will be:
o A place to have fun, socialize, and develop friendships with students with similar
experiences and struggles (Can white students do the same thing? You have to understand. It can be stressful for a white person to overcome his privilege.  He or she might need a safe space as well.).
o An opportunity for academic advising, tutoring, and support (and drinking. Don't forget drinking.)
o A place of emotional and social support and a place to decompress from the daily
stress of being a Black student at a PWI (What? No demand for facials and massages provided by the school?)
• Area intended for Black students but open to all other minority students on campus

 The new segregation.

With so many darned racists at MSU, those athletes should not have gone there. They should have accepted those scholarship offers from South Alabama, Northeast Louisiana and Arkansas State.

Anonymous said...

Ha, go to ole miss. They don't fly the flag.

Anonymous said...

They fail to mention the percentage of athletic scholarships, or reduced housing, book fees, or tuition of blacks vs. whites.

Need the university to help the graduation rate, how about study and quit hanging out all day and night and not trying. I can guarantee the professors know who tries and who doesn't.

Anonymous said...

Precisely why people want to segregate.

Anonymous said...

I suppose next they are going to want their own water fountains, bathrooms, and swimming pools?

Anonymous said...

so, can us 'white folks' ask for safe space in Jacktown? Or would that just be outside the city limits?

Anonymous said...

A white safe space in Jackson is Eastover... petit bois and others like woodland hills...

Anonymous said...

I think the flag should be changed. But if it truly hurts a student that much that a university has the state flag on campus (even though the leaders have all come out and said it needs to be chaged) then maybe you should transfer to Itta Bena or Lorman. I bet they would feel very safe there. The state flag is what is is right now. Removing it from a damn pole isn't going to change it unfortunately. I'd bet these safe spacers would find something to whine about anywhere they went though. Lastly, While Ole Miss doesn't have the flag currently on campus, they do have other confederate memorials that I'm sure frightens the crap out of safe spacers.

Tell that to the couple that was tied up and robbed...or the others that were just robbed or had stuff stolen

How about looking for that safe place in another state?
You already enjoy quite a few things other students do not have.
You get to make lower entrance scores just because of your color.
You get to yell racist at anyone you do not like.

and I just remembered I had something better to do than to waste my time or money at my alma mater this weekend if these jack asses are stirring up a bunch of shit!

Segregated Safe Space ?! MLK is spinning in his grave...SMDH at these fools.

Mizzou Closing Four Whole Dorms Because Of Collapsing Enrollment

The University of Missouri (MU) is closing two additional dormitories following a massive enrollment decline that follows a wave of race-related protests at the school. The school has now shut down four entire residence halls in response to a sharp decline in the number of students who want to attend the school.

The shuttering of Respect and Excellence residence halls, which together can house about 315 students, is just the latest sign of a severe institutional crisis at MU in the months after it forced out its president in response to the demands of protesters. In January, the school saw a drop in applications of about 5 percent. In February, the school admitted racial strife had imperiled its credit rating. In March, the school admitted it was anticipating a budget shortfall of $32 million, thanks to an expected loss of 1500 undergraduate students next year, including 900 fewer freshmen.

A little more information from someone in Starkville:

There are two separate groups here. The first is a large group of students who just want to take down the flag. They were largely well behaved at the protest, and were more than willing to talk politely with students who support the flag. These people are NOT the "f*ck your white privilege" crowd from Mizzou and Yale. They're friendly, smart kids who don't like the flag.

The second group consists of less than ten students, who wrote these absurd demands. They are drinking the critical race studies, safe space Kool-Aid, which is being funneled to them by BLM organizers. These 5-10 students have deliberately lied to and about the administration. For example, they've claimed that Mississippi State "rejected" their demands less than 24 hours after issuing them, even though MSU had not yet responded at all. They even claimed that MSU somehow "shut down" their yahoo mail account.

This latter group consists of frauds and liars. They are part of the larger group, but not a particularly influential part. Nobody at the protest was talking about safe spaces or mandatory re-education training. It was 100% about the flag, and very civil.

Unfortunately, the latter group is burning bridges for the first group. Mark Keenum isn't going to be dictated to by an anonymous group who say they "won't tolerate any more discussions" and blatantly lie about him and his staff. This isn't Missouri.

About time to shut most of these Universities down. They are nothing but a hot bed for the left wing liberal agenda.I thought MSU was better than most but look what we have here. My family have been supporters of State since the 1930s and it is time for these student to move on or I will find another school.

The University Of Missouri announced the other day that endowment has dropped to the lowest level in 65 years as well as the largest drop in applications by potential future students. However the university did announce tat they are easing the traditional school policy for those Junior College transfers that wish to enroll at University Of Missouri. This sounds like a complete and utter disaster for the school. They should've never been allowed into the SEC...

Anonymous said...

Students should not make ANY policy decisions. They are too young and stupid to know anything. That's why they are at a learning institution.

The flag should stay and if you don't like it, get the fuck out of Mississippi.

Anonymous said...

How big of a loser do you have to be to spend time doing this? Go have a beer and find a party like normal students do. It's college, the best time of any of these losers lives and they are wasting it.

Anonymous said...

5:31 -- What the hell are you talking about? MSU has done literally nothing but let 40 students out of 21K exercise their first amendment right to stand around and chant. There has been zero capitulation; zero pandering to the "safe space" crowd; zero tolerance for intimidation. MSU's collective response has been, "Thanks for your opinion. Our policies aren't changing. Have a nice day."

MSU aggressively recruited "diversity" to be PC. Now their "diverse" students are creating turmoil instead of trying to get a freakin' education and bettering themselves................At least they aren't as far out in left field as Ole Miss. It is only a matter of time before they do away w/ "racist" shit like the name "Ole Miss" and the name "the Rebels"...........

More on the JP story, they hired a new headmaster and he hired the diversity position from St Andrews!,, talk about a damn liberal!,, then to make matters worse they had a Tie in votes for homecoming queen and had a black and a white!
To me and many others this seemed to set the school back to the 1970's instead of 2016! Just because we are different races doesn't mean you give out 2 crowns! Let the elected person win! Democracy works when you step back and let it work! Jason Walton needs to go back to the lil liberal college he came from and leave JP now!

Anonymous said...

A load of horseshit, no doubt.
If their 'demands' are not met??
Let's fix it like this: If you don't want to go to school here go elsewhere.
I have a degree from MSU. I hope that no one as stupid as these people ever get a degree from my school. It's one thing to complain. People do have differences. But when your'demands' are completely crazy you look like those fools in Ferguson, MO. And you will get no sympathy at all, you just look like fools.

Anonymous said...

There is nothing wrong with diversity and there is nothing wrong with having a diversity officer to help with outreach. Also, there is nothing wrong with breaking a tie for an honor like homecoming queen by allowing there to be two queens that year. This is high school, and it is better to have two than to break one girl's heart at a still young age.

Diversity is a fact of life in the real world. Clearly Prep knows that, and clearly the handful of students at MSU with their demands DO NOT know that. In today's world, we all work together. If you cant or don't know how to do that, you will not go far. Better to learn these skills in high school and college.

ROFLMAO

They want a safe space but when it comes to stopping male trannies from violating a rest room safe space for women and little girls well no f&%king way that can be allowed to happen.

Here's an excerpt from a speech by Dr. LaForge (the younger) last week on the campus of Delta State University where he serves as President/Chancellor.

"Over the past few years, Delta State has hosted Safe Space training programs in which I, along with numerous faculty and staff members, have participated. The goals of the national Safe Space program are to create campus spaces where LGBTQ students and employees feel safe, supported, and valued as members of the university community, and to reduce fear of reprisal and discrimination within the university community. The university will continue to support that program and the work it does."

Some are saying when Thad resigns, Phil will appoint this guy to fill the remainder of the term. But, to the point; if he is creating 'safe space' isn't he concurrently admitting that there are 'unsafe spaces' on his campus under his watch? And if so, shouldn't he be fired?

I think a lot of the demands illustrate some important issues (faculty ratio, graduation rates, dorm segregation), but when you start the conversation by framing them as "demands," you'll immediately put administrators and alumni on the defensive.

Let's start a conversation about why the school can't find minority teachers and why black students aren't matriculating at an acceptable rate.

And I'll never understand the "safe space" for a single race argument. Would they like it to be separate but equal...

8:50 - NEWSFLASH! Somebody's heart is always broken when there's a winner and a loser. But, by the very nature of those things we call contests, that's reality.

Children used to learn that lesson at about age four and certainly by the time they lost out at cheerleader tryouts or were second string QB. Your hokey notion of a trophy for all participants smacks of liberalism.

Anonymous said...

Is it not racist to specifically target people because of their race. I would think anyone who has the money and doesn't have a disciplinary issue can attend JP.

Anonymous said...

The "diversity" push at Prep, JA, St. Andrews is all about attracting black families with an ability to pay the exorbitant freight since their white customer base is on the wane.

I'm sure this story is getting extensive coverage over at the Starkville Free Press.

Anonymous said...

@10:08, Yea i figured that was behind this. I wonder if they ever considered that their kid may never be able to play on the basketball team or play running back at jp.

Kingfish said...

Just thinking out loud. It would seem that as the white population in NE Jackson decreases, then the pool of students that traditionally served JP decreases as well. Rankin County families don't feel the pressure to send their kids to JP because they live in an A school district although JP provides a better education. Rankin has a decent alternative while Jackson does not. That is probably driving the diversity recruitment to some degree. I will admit I'm speculating and don't mind being told I'm wrong on this point.

Diversity is desired in schools because most people understand that it helps students prepare to enter the real world if their school looks more like the world they will be entering. It is ironic that the same people complaining about "safe spaces" are also criticizing schools like Jackson Prep who are, essentially, trying to get rid of what has historically been a "safe space" for privileged white kids from NE Jackson. I grew up with kids that went to private school, then joined the right frat in college and didn't have to interact with anyone but other well off white kids all the way through adulthood. When they entered the job market and had to work with (and for) people of other cultures, races, sexual orientation, etc., they were not prepared. Schools should not wrap their students in warm, safe cocoons if they want to prepare them for succeeding in the real world. Just the opposite.

I don't see how a head of school's dismantling (or at least diluting) of a "safe space" can be seen as "liberal." I don't think it springs forth from some conservative agenda, either. What Dr. Walton and other administrators like him are doing is simply their job as educators, to try and prepare their students to adapt and succeed in the real world.

If you still find yourself getting upset about a push for diversity, try to concentrate less on how it helps the minority student, and try to think more about how it helps the white kid. It won't make you a better person, but at least you'll feel a little bit better about it.

Anonymous said...

Hey 1:16, as long as everyone is paying the same monetary price and keeping up with the academic work load while not not being disruptive and slowing down the rest of the class then I have no issue with your argument. But I know that isnt the case at one local private school.

To the guy who wants to know why they don't hire more minority professors: us dept of education says in year 2009-10 ( latest reported) doctoral degrees were earned by whites (74.3%), Asian 11.8, black 7.4, Hispanic 5.8, American Indian 0.7. Of those 7.4 black many will be doctors, lawyers, or something else that pays more than teachers. So the idea that we have 20% black students and want 20% black facility is born from people who are I smart enough to even go to college. It took me all of two minutes to find these stats.

Diversity for the sake of diversity becomes adversity.

It's equally odd how those who harp about equality feel so strongly that employing unequal parameters is the correct path to equality. The incorrect means justify the incorrect ends. Or two wrongs not making a right.

Diversity originates from diverte (change direction) and is itself born of an action. It requires input. "Creating" diversity does nothing but forces individuals to accept diversity for it's sake. It does not teach individuals to understand diversity from a homogeneous viewpoint. And frankly, that's where this liberal mental masturbation is born from. Things like "white privilege" and cultural acceptance and "equality" are all used to intimate that the individual should be ashamed of being an individual and ashamed of their heritage, especially if their heritage is not of a protected class. For, the protected class' heritage is to be celebrated.

It's very simple, 1:16, diversity is not taught, forced or directed. It is something to be understood. If diversity was necessary for the future interactions of young adults then I feel sure the public education complex in this country would be tripping over themselves to instill diversity training and have diversity officers in ghetto schools and HBCs. For those individuals would need to be forcibly exposed to the cultures of whities in order for them to succeed in the "real world."

Anonymous said...

The behavior issues and disruptions are occurring at greater percentage from the students who also make up a greater percentage of the scholarships. Does that really surprise anyone? Diversity can be good but it can also have drawbacks.

Anonymous said...

DAMN 3:25... TRUTH!!

Anonymous said...

Just over forty years ago, a black diversity officer in a state agency where I was employed admonished me that my wife owed it to society to quit her job in a private school and also told me that it was my civic duty to withdraw my children from private school and enroll them in public school. He referred to it as 'sacrifice for the good of the whole'.

Anonymous said...

'What Dr. Walton and other administrators like him are doing is simply their job as educators, to try and prepare their students to adapt and succeed in the real world.'

Education in this country went to hell when administrators were told they are social engineers instead of educators. LaForge is supreme evidence of that at DSU. It's all about receiving a standing golf-clap from your peer educators.

Appears the movie PCU is now becoming a documentary... "We will not protest, WE WILL NOT PROTEST, we will not protest...." lol

Herding Rolling Marbles said...

Diversity is a tired and tiring buzz-word. You don't 'implement', 'force' or 'create' diversity. Diversity is nothing more or less than taking a snapshot and judging it.

If you pour a sack of marbles into a pan and there are similarly round marbles of similar color and weight, the marble pool is judged to be diverse. If not, corrections must be made. Some of the marbles must be marked defective and either removed from the sack or reshaped.

If another snapshot doesn't indicate significant progress or success, marbles from sources other than this sack must be sought and put into the sack. If that doesn't result in a diverse marble group, screaming and demanding change and shaming the marbles with enough energy to cause some of them to simply roll away must occur. Eventually those in charge of diversifying marbles think they will have progress/success/equality and they write books and journal articles about their plans and efforts. But it never works.

One year in Iraq or Afghanistan and you won't need to worry about flags and hurt feelings. You'll see tribal flags and start to understand that one flag and one flag only matters. You'll probably grow up enough to appreciate the fact that you're in a school environment where you can spend the time studying, in class or at your part-time job instead of being concerned about mortars and IEDs (no Kenny, not IUDs). Just go to class, shut up and learn something. Or even better find a trade or join the military.

Let them loose on the Jackson city streets. Should be safe enough, it is the capital city.

Hate to burst your bubble about private schools in attracting minority students that are paying the high tuition rates. Most of the minority students that are going to private schools are on some kind of a minority "scholarship" which is less than half of what the white families are paying. The leadership at JA and St. Andrews won't talk about it because it is too inflammatory to those shelling out the big buck at full price.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
