A skilled workforce is getting harder to find, all the while we push our kids to college.
Bill Minor served on one. If you don't believe me, read his next column.
9:22. I agree. We have told our children that it's degrading to work with your hands. All the while as I look around the jobsites I see 50, 60 and even 70 year old men working. You might find a young person 20 to 30 but they are about 1 in 100 and then they have no desire to learn. It's shameful. Then, let's talk about the ones that do show up for work that can't pass a drug test, have no work ethic, and have to ask momma if they can be disciplined by the employer!
Most young people do not learn how to work. If it does not have a cell phone or computer game involved they are not interested. Anything they are involved in when young results with everyone getting a trophy. Teachers are not allowed to discipline kids. Kids show up when and if they want to. They are taught that if they sit down they can demand anything they want and it will be given to them.
That is not much preparedness for real life. What do you expect them to do when they grow up?
"AWL KIDZ WANT IZ STUFF WIT CELLPHONES AND COMPUDERS!"
"YUNG FOWLKS AINT GOT NO WORK ETHIC!"
"ALL KIDZ WANT TROPHIES!"
Despite the Aggrieved Old Man ramblings here, younger people do enjoy work. Heck, I do, and based on my experiences, older people (folks over 40) have been some of the laziest and unmotivated people I've ever worked with. I worked a factory job in college. Each day, I'd see older folks on their cellphones, checking/posting on Facebook and starting workplace drama/nonsense.
And as far as the participation trophy mess goes, kids understand the difference between participation and achievement. And since when is going to college a bad thing?
Thanks for this. Pascagoula plays an important role in building these state-of-the-art destroyers. There's more modern tech in their shipbuilding techniques than many realize. Only wish Mississippi could find a way to leverage the Ingalls presence more fully like Washington has Boeing.
For what it costs the taxpayers to build one of these ships they could build 10 if there wasn't so much waste and mistakes. Each and every part of the ship has to be done several times before they will let you do it right. If you do it right the first time you will be fired.
Popular Mechanics still exists???
