I came across this old Jackson Daily News front page while looking for Gold Coast stories in the archives last year. This 1940 front page shows the blatant racism that once took place at the capitol. Keep in mind, the newspaper reported this story from a positive point of view. One can almost hear the chuckles as the editor sent the story to press. Warning: racist language is used in the story.

Awful, just awful.
What about wedding cakes and bathrooms? Substitute "Muslim" for "Negro" and it sounds like the politics of today.
I'm white, a Republican and a life long resident of Jackson. Blacks, in general, were treated very well and with respect. The only thing that I heard of several times that was very unjust was Buster Bailey taking the doors off black tenants homes if the did not pay their rent---that still upsets me and I never will understand how he could treat another human being that way.
Because it works.
8:57 is a damned idiot if he/she thinks Muslims have a plight similar to that of negroes in 1940.
Kingfish, are you saying you agree with what he did? There are many reasons that people can not pay their rent---think about the children that may have lived at some of those homes. Those children are the very adults that hate white people today.
9:57, please put yourself in the place of the home owner. They still have to pay for the house even though the renters do not pay rent. Try getting renters out of a house when they decide they do not want or can't pay the rent. It can take anywhere from several months to never. All of this time they are still not paying rent.
Was it Buster, or his father? And did it even happen? Sounds like 9:34 is carrying a grudge, else why would he go out of his way to bring up such a story?
Obviously the Hedermans had not yet bought the Daily News, what with the negative references to the "Bilbo-Hederman-Johnson force." It does strain credulity that such a force would oppose the poll tax, after all the trouble their grandfathers' generation of white Mississippians went to to keep ex-slaves from voting after the war. There's a story there for sure.
Just remember, the folks that did that back then are the folks that raised the current crop of legislators.
@ 9:34 - "Blacks, in general, were treated very well and with respect." Wow. I guess the holocaust never happened either.
J. Andrew Gipson of Jones Walker (R. Fresh Cow Pie) would have been right at home, just a different set of victims.
9:34 - you remind me of my freshman roommate who repeated the shopworn "we love them as individuals but hate them as a race" to which I replied "thank God we loved them as individuals. No telling how many we would have lynched." Yes, "they" were treated with respect as long as they didn't get uppity, you know, wanting to vote and such.
9:45 its 8:57. Has a political candidate for president vowed to keep Christians from visiting the country? What about building a wall to keep "them" out. (or "us" in--i'm not sure of which one yet.)
Larry Craig, Dennis Hastert, and Jared Fogle are 100% likely to molest a boy or make sexual advances in a bathroom, while Ms. Jenner is not. Good 'family' values examples...
One of the reasons we broke away from Britain was that we believed that all men were created equal-and men as a 'humandkind' sense. You don't get to choose anyone's lifestyle, religion, or color of skin. Whether you like it or not.
So yes-Muslims feel the struggle as did 'negros' in 1940. Some 'negros' still feel it today.
@12:44. Get a real life. It is getting very tiring for any and every post that you try to find a way to bring in "J. Andrew Gipson" and to remind us - again, as if we cared - "of Jones Walker".
We know you don't like him. We recognize that you don't have the gonads to put your name on your continuous attempts to slap at him.
Don't care if it is him that you don't like, or Jones Walker, or both. We get it. Enough. Grow up.
2:48 - Pull your britches up, bitch. No presidential candidate advocates keeping 'them' out. Several, one in particular, does favor the concept of border security and legal entry. If you don't, you're the problem. Not part of the problem but the ENTIRE problem.
If you're going to sit there sipping your latte pretending to describe the feelings of Negroes, at least learn how to spell the word.
And, lastly, your notion of the thoughts of our founders is a bit askew. Tell us more about the equality you think was envisioned and as portrayed in the original, un-amended Constitution.
9:34 seems to confuse being polite and well-mannered with being respectful.
Being respectful is treating that person as you would want to be treated.
Surely, you wouldn't want to be denied service at restaurants and businesses, have to go to a different bathroom or be denied the use of a bathroom, or have to pay higher interest rates or fewer city services or not be able to go to the best doctor or hospital or the best school or play sports on the best teams with the best equipment simply because of your skin color.
To treat anyone based on their skin color or religion or nationality or biological differences rather than their conduct in your presence or in the community is not respectful. It's called prejudice and people that are really smart question ,face and overcome to overcome their cultural biases. The ignorant don't ever imagine there are things they don't know and that is usually an inability to think outside their birth box.
Is that Tom Head again at 7:06 talking about biological differences and birth boxes? The same Tom Head who never, ever sat his fat ass in a classroom in his life? Tell us again about that 'birth box'.
Are you trying to give Jerry Mitchell a run for his money?
Racism BBAAAAAADDDDD!
There. That covers it. Next topic, please.
WOW, you girls can really get out of hand rather quickly. I was raised by a black nanny named Sweetchild and we all loved her and she was treated just like any other member of the family---I never saw one black person mistreated in any way---I'm pushing 3/4 of a century old and I've seen a lot of things mainly cheaters and people who would rather lie than tell the truth. Everything was better back then---we could walk the streets at night, play outside and just enjoy life. I bet a lot of Blacks can remember the peace that existed and wish it was like that again. I can only speak for myself so don't all you name calling girls get your panties in a wad.
