Hinds County Court Judge Melvin Priester, Jr. ordered a mental evaluation for accused killer Zebulum James last week. James was arrested in November for killing a woman at the Shell station on Watkins Drive and another woman in the parking lot of Logan's Roadhouse on County Line Road on the same night. Both victims were white. James also proceeded to shoot at a JATRAN bus and a home during his campaign of death.

IT IS NOW ORDERED that the hereby Defendant shall as soon as possible undergo mental evaluation to be performed by Dr. Benjamin Root to determine the following, to wit:
1) Whether the Defendant has sufficient present ability to consult with his attorney with a
reasonable degree of rational understanding on the preparation of his defense, and whether she has a rational as well as factual understanding of the nature and object of the legal proceedings against him;
2) The Defendant's mental state at the time of the alleged offenses with respect to his ability to know the nature and quality of his alleged acts and to know the difference between right and wrong in relation to his alleged acts at that time;
3) Whether the offenses with which the Defendant is charged was committed while he was under the influence of extreme mental or emotional disturbance;
4) Whether the offenses with which the Defendant is charged was committed while his
capacity to appreciate the criminality of his conduct or to conform his conduct to the requirements of the law was substantially impaired;
5) The Defendant's capacity to understand and to knowingly, intelligently and voluntarily assert or waive his constitutional rights;

I wonder if Jambalaya is seeing if the same rules about hate crimes apply if there was motive.
The odds of randomly shooting a white person aren't very good in a city that's 80% black. Especially on Watkins Drive. So it's relevant. However I'm sure some "cousin" is getting a "crazy check," so he'll be found to be mentally incompetent.

Mental evaluation? I think this is a pretty clear-cut hate crime. This guy needs to go to court, present the facts to a jury, and be sentenced to death. Case closed. this guy is an true monster.
It shouldn't matter if he is sane or not. He just isn't worth the time trying to prove it.
2:06 and 2:45 - regardless of your extreme and illegal views, the law requires that only competent, sane people be sent to prison. if he is neither, he doesn't likely get freedom. so put up your pitchforks and nooses and let the system play out. I agree the guy is a worthless POS, but rules are rules among those of us civilized citizens.

Can anyone one of you keyboard lawyers tell me why this constitutes possibly being mentally ill and possibly getting a lighter sentence and not tried as a hate crime? In the words of Kat Williams, "don't worry, I'll wait".
2:15, you have to understand. He is black and those he killed were white. That is not a hate crime. To be a hate crime the person who is killed has to be black and the killer white.
When are the racist going to learn what a hate crime is?
