Governor Phil Bryant issued the following press release:
Governor Bryant Lowers Flags in Honor of Servicemen Killed in Tennessee
JACKSON—Gov.
Phil Bryant has issued an Executive Order lowering the United States
and Mississippi flags in honor of four United States Marines and the
Navy Petty Officer who died
as a result of last week’s attack on two military facilities in
Chattanooga, Tenn.
“The
men and women who defend this country are under attack. Just last week,
five American heroes were killed in a deliberate act of violence. This
is a small way Mississippi can
honor those who died. The thoughts and prayers of the good people of
this state remain with the families of the fallen,” Gov. Phil Bryant
said.

1. Thank You Gov. for the respect you give servicemen & women.
2. Thank you Gov. for not being PC on the Flag.
3. Thank You Gov. for the frank statement after the two Hattiesburg police officers were shot.
Johnny (Reb) Weir, barf. Our flag, like our governor, is an embarrassment to our state.
I agree with this action, and the feeling behind it. However, technically, I am not sure it Governor Bryant has the authority to order the US flag lowered.
1:47,
The Governor does have the authority to lower it on STATE owned properties, but not federal (ie courthouse, post offices etc....)
Pandering to the 2nd Amendment Crowd. How many of our vets are homeless and in need of mental health treatment? What's this hypocrite doing for them?
Tom Head, what, pray tell, does lowering the flag for men killed by a Jihadist have to do with the 2nd amendment?
2:23, I would assume that you are talking about the hypocrite in the white house. That is the one who shows gross disrespect for our vets.
our guv is simply copycatting a few other guvs that already thought to do this.
now he needs to follow it up by urging our federal senators and reps to reform the VA.

Think protocol, people. The US President has the first prerogative/obligation to act in such an instance. Then, those in charge of states (governors), then mayors of municipalities. The power/authority to have flags lowered diminishes as that chain is followed, downward. It's protocol to observe that chain of command.
It's also protocol, on a different subject, that no flag fly higher than the US Flag. The large church at the intersection of 49 and 16 coming into Yazoo City is an example of poor protocol. Protocol is what it is, like it or not, respect it or not.
It's also two hundred year old protocol for congressmen and senators to display their state flag in their offices. But, I reckon that's a subject not worthy of discussion.
Furled, I agree with your sentiment but the 'chain of command' you mention as to protocol does not displace the fact that the same protocol allows a Governor to order the US Flag, on state property, to be lowered even when the President doesn't. Think the Hattiesburg police officers - it was appropriate for the Gov to lower the flag in our state, but wouldn't think that other Govs would. So even when the President hasn't made the move, it is still protocol and within the chain for the Gov to do so. And I'm glad that he did. And now I'm glad that the President finally decided to do so nationwide.

I agree, 8:07. And my post does not disagree with yours at all. The governors of states were probably standing by, waiting for the president to order flags lowered. When he did not, a few of them did did. The primary difference is that he can order them lowered on certain properties, primarily federal. Typically when that is done, others follow suit and flags are lowered on multiple properties. Usually there is agreement and unity in such situations. But, with this president, all bets are off and unity is not possible.
The race-baiters and Fondren/Belhaven Harpies won't be satisfied until the flag is lowered to the ground, then burned. And raise a rainbow flag in its place. None of them understand one whit of history or the meaning of flags and none of them can see or think past the end of their noses. It's Kumbaya, peace-out and a craft-beer in every hand. The whole world is Woodstock fifty-five years later, Volvos for all, loft apartments at taxpayer expense, free groceries and spread the wealth. We have turned the corner to find that there are free Popsicles and every store is a WIC Office.
um, @1:47 PM..I would imagine the Guv has that authority. I however do question by what authority the US flag was lowered at the US Post Office (LeFleur Branch) when our destined to be great late Mayor Chokeweed kicked the bucket. And stayed lowered for weeks....
