Erick Hambrick died yesterday. JPD investigating.

Second Update: JPD is awaiting Waffle House video.  The restaurant is cooperating with JPD.  The autopsy has not been completed.  The reason for the delayed start in the investigation is it was thought at first that the case was one of only a medical emergency as  Mr. Hambrick was discovered lying down in the parking lot.   It was determined by family members at the hospital that an item of jewelry was stolen.  JPD does not have any suspects or descriptions as it has not yet obtained a copy of the video.    June 1. 12:37 PM.

Update: Spoke to JPD.  JPD is awaiting results of an autopsy and said the case is currently considered to be a "death pending" investigation.  He was robbed and assaulted.   9:22 PM.

Erick Hambrick died last night.  JJ is trying to get more information but was able to confirm some of these Facebook posts with JPD.*  He was apparently assaulted and robbed at the Waffle House on High Street Thursday night and was removed from life support last night. Needless to say, JJ is getting swamped with emails from people asking for more information.  He was 52 years old. He performed at the Mississippi Opera and worked at the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.

Update: no change in Eric's status. If the LORD doesn't call him home tonight, decision will be made Noon tomorrow re removing him from life support. Then, as now, it will be GOD's will. Doctors say Eric has blood clot in his brain they cannot stop and there is no brain activity. Spoke with xxxx and xxxx late this afternoon and they are in shock but remaining strong for now. My sister, xxxx, finally located Eric's car tonight. Apparently, he stopped at the Waffle House on High Street after rehearsal at church last night and suffered a catastrophic fall in the parking lot about 10:30pm. xxxx was not notified until Noon today Jackson time. The rest of what we know was previously posted. Please keep praying for Eric and the entire family. Thank you.May 29 at 11:52pm

Beautiful rainbows and a stunning sunset were in the sky this evening as we were leaving the hospital, promises from a Mighty God. HE painted a beautiful picture to welcome our sweet uncle and a precious friend home to meet Jesus. Thanks for all the prayers. We will keep all updated with arrangements

We just found out that Eric was assaulted, therefore, this is now a homicide and arrangements have been delayed pending investigation. We appreciate your continued prayers and concerns. We will post arrangements asap.

Eric was such a sweet soul. He would never hurt anyone and did not deserve this! Praying that the person(s) who did this will be caught and brought to swift justice. Thanks to Kingfish for posting this.

WAPT News reported he was robbed attacked on Thrusday night at 10:30 PM.
"The incident happened at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday at the restaurant, near High Street in Jackson."

This type of violence is happening across the country. Been waiting for it to come to Jackson. Such an unnecessary tragedy.

Here is just one of many posts I saw about this gentleman.

"You want to know more about this dear man?? He was a brother, son, uncle, friend to any who needed him, would give you the shirt off his back, He was a phenomenal singer, and sang more than in just churches. He sang in the Mississippi Chorus, the Mississippi Opera, and many other venues. He was a talented actor and director, having done both in many theaters in our State. He love God and he loved his fellow man, and would have given his last dollar to help someone in need. Eric Hahn Hambrick mattered, and his life was taken by a senseless, evil thug and for what???? A few dollars in his pocket???? ERIC MATTERED!!"

I don't understand why the media doesn't report some of these crimes as soon as possible. WLBT still doesn't have it on the website. What happens if it happened again to someone else the next day and it could have been avoided if people only had the information they needed to stay clear of that area.

I never thought I would have known someone who was murdered. And someone like Eric? I'm sure he would have given them anything. They killed him for no reason.

@7:23 AM, I agree with you! Should we have a silent protest?

Rita McCollum - "Praying that the person(s) who did this will be caught and brought to swift justice." The thug who did this may be caught, but in Hinds County there won't be any justice.

11:51 is correct. I have known Eric for a long time and he would have given them everything he had, but they chose to kill him. This is such a loss. It was easier to accept when we thought it was an aneurysm or a fall.......there was no need for this. He was a good man with the kindest of hearts and the sweetest of spirits. This is beyond wrong.

Sometimes I stop for a burger at Whataburger on High Street and get nervous at the people lurking in the parking lot. All the merchants there need video surveillance in the parking lots, and JPD needs to step up patrolling the area.

10:53 - The news media don't have a crystal ball. Someone has to tell them. Look at the timeline, too. It happened Thursday night and was initially thought to be an accident. It wasn't classified as a homicide until some time later. Local news media don't usually report someone falling in a parking lot. He was taken off life support on Saturday. So, the local news media (at least some of them) did report the homicide in a timely manner. Not defending local news media, but give them a break if you don't know what you're talking about.

The Jackson police department are playing down crime stats to keep Yarber & Lee Vance looking good as mayor & police chief. No Joke. Get out of Jackson for your own Safety.

Anonymous said...

I know what I am talking about. 90% of the members who comprise our "local news media" are simply incompetent. I don't give those incompetent at their jobs a break.

Anonymous said...

"What happens if it happened again to someone else the next day and it could have been avoided if people only had the information they needed to stay clear of that area."

That information has been available since about forever, and many of us have decided to "stay clear of that area" for about the same length of time.

Kingfish said...

It happened late Thursday night. Everyone thought he just fell and hit his head in the parking lot. Then he died Saturday night. News media didn't know until as I did, people emailed tips. It is Sunday night. JPD is pretty much closed down. SO you are trying to get information from JPD sources about what happened. The problem is it didn't become a death pending investigation until he died. They are doing an autopsy. I was told the code for the investigation will probably be changed today.

Prayers for Eric said...

Prayers for Eric and his family. This shouldn't happen in a civilized society. I work at a nearby business and we are constantly vigilant. and yes, we do have guns stashed within easy reach. We have had shootings in our parking lot and other mischief. We make sure we are gone before the sun goes down. The police do a good job of patrolling, but once the cover of darkness falls this is a high crime zone. But most of Jackson a high crime zone.

Car 54 Where Are You? said...

There was some sort of well attended (go figure) concert at the Coliseum (virtually across the street from the site of this murder) Saturday night. Probably five JPD cars positioned strategically in the parking area and on High Street with Blues flashing. Suppose this is a signal to the thug crowd to give it a rest for a couple days. Then, back to bidness as usual.

Literally as Eric died, the police lights across the street from the scene of his assault were set up as (temporary) warnings.

Can't even go out and get a good pancake in Jackson anymore. We need The Eye of Sauron mounted on one of the high rise building in JackIraq.

There is a need for a map of the city of Jackson with "pins" or other location notifiers where serious crimes have occurred in the last 12 months and in the latest month. This map should be available online so that locals and tourists have knowledge that the police will not produce. The map should be accessible online. It would include all assaults, robberies, carjackings, murders and attempted murders, rapes and the like.

Any chance you can foster this process?

pittpanther said...

Thanks for the info, KF. Waiting to hear how how this incident was branded a fall for more than 2 days, then became a robbery and assault. No one said anything on Thursday? This is all based on email tips?

You would sued by the NAACP, ACLU, SECU, BBM, Obama DOJ,HUD and The Jackson Free Press for red lining the community.

Kingfish said...

I post those maps here from time to time. They are available on the city of Jackson website. government>departments>police>maps. Perhaps you could get off your lazy butt and look them up instead of waiting for me to do it for you.

Kingfish said...

It happened so quick no one thought of a crime. Then family members at hospital noticed some of his property was missing. Police are working the case right now. Yes, there was video but we don't know yet if it was the right angle.

WLBT is dead last on the story. Used to be that would not have been the case. One reason it is no longer number one in ratings.

Anonymous said...

I find that WJTV reports the news much faster than WLBT. They had covered the story about the crime in Eastover (kidnapped doctor) WAY before WLBT. This crime is just so very sad.

Episode of WHAT, pray tell?

Nothing on this tragic story on wlbt at noon today (Mon.)

Cheryl is off on Monday's. Howard and Marcia don't come in until 1:30. I'm surprised Kenney isn't covering it. He's all over crime stories. Loves 'em. Oh well. New management so who are we to argue?

speaking of wlbt, I watched at noon today, too...most repeats of last week stories and wrong video over SEVERAL Stores & camera left on speaker, way past end of feature

who found him and who called the ambulance etc.?
was he conscious?

Anonymous said...

This was a hate crime. Eric was told that "This area isn't safe for whites." and then followed and beaten. Black on white equals riots in the street, but hate crimes on white people is considered ideal for a hush up.

Thoroughly Pissed said...

His ring was stolen off his finger. Why the idiotic vague references to 'an item of jewelry'?

If all of these media have police scanners (which also tie into ambulance frequencies) why the hell babble over Cheryl and Howard and Marcia? Somebody is on duty attending to the scanner. We don't need certain media stars to investigate shit.

I'm not sure who is more complicit in downplaying this tragedy or apologizing for it or simply ignoring it.

Lee Vance just said "a male suspect"....didn't say a race....well, what are the odds?

Anonymous said...

My prayers to the family. The good doctor in the Eastover incident got it right, Make 'em look like swiss cheese! That way there can be some more BBQ and fish fry meetins to learn how to mentor thugs. They been successful so far.

Go to the City of Jackson website, url below & click on crime map.

Also, Waffle House is on Larson Drive just off of High St. Has the Jackson Police also checked the video cameras feeds at the Kanagroo Gas Station and The Best Westerns Executive Suites on Larson Dr. They are at a point of concurrency with the Waffle House.

These senseless attacks are sickening. My condolences and prayers to his family and friends.

From a personal safety / risk perspective, at what point will it become "too dangerous" to hold events at the Trade Mart, such as Mistletoe Marketplace?

Crime Watch said...

It's already too dangerous to hold events in or near the coliseum. Do we really need a certain number of murders, robberies, jackings and beatings in order to declare the venue unsafe? How many events have pulled out, been cancelled or are no longer scheduled in that area? A damned bunch! The children's rodeo pulled out and went to Hattiesburg about four years ago and it was an annual event on that venue. Concerts have just about abandoned the area. Dennery's saw the writing on the wall years ago and the old Ramada now is empty except for a few travelers who have no clue. You can walk through that massive building for thirty minutes and not see a soul. But, hell, it's all only perception.

How do you know this? Did Eric tell someone this??? Where did you get your information?

Two black men charged in the beating death of Eric. That's about as predictable as the summer weather around here

May he rest in peace -- gone too soon.

Here is an interesting set of statistics on Jackson. I found the Description column of crime in Jackson, the most informative. SAD SAD day -- and those who are the "leaders" in our community just sit and fiddle while Rome burns.

http://www.neighborhoodscout.com/ms/jackson/crime/#data

A portion of the "Description" -- I would suggest reading it all -- including the data points used to develop the statistics.

"With a crime rate of 71 per one thousand residents, Jackson has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes - from the smallest towns to the very largest cities. One's chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime here is one in 14. Within Mississippi, more than 97% of the communities have a lower crime rate than Jackson. In fact, after researching dangerous places to live, NeighborhoodScout found Jackson to be one of the top 100 most dangerous cities in the U.S.A."

Ode To Jackson said...

8:21; Did you intentionally misrepresent the month and time of the funeral?

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
