Meet the candidates

The candidates to replace Ward 1 Councilman Quentin Whitwell appeared at a forum held by the Lefleur East Foundation. Former WLBT News Director Dennis Smith came out of retirement for one night to moderate the event. The video of the debate will be posted in segments for each question. That style of posting was popular last year for the Madison Mayoral debate as most of you preferred it to one long video.   Here are the opening statements.

Charles Barbour is the clear winner, followed by Dorsey Carson. Barbour's experience showed and he had a firm grip on the issues.

Much ado about nothing. A race to be the lone dissenting vote on everything. I do think ashby could keep us entertained.

I thought the same thing and I do not live in jackson, nor do I have anything to gain from him winning or loosing.
Charles Barbour (sp)?
I also only saw the introduction....I can spot real from bs an iPads length away, I guess.
Carsey is 2nd best, but flimsy.
If ward whatever wants to elect the republican poster child developer guy, then let them do so. But I don't think going into jackson city hall 'guns blazing' is going to do any good whatsoever. Quite the opposite, in fact.

I wish Mr. C. Barbour would become less presumptuous and pushy in his approach for money and votes. A real turn off.

Ain't voting for no Barbour. Will consider each of the other 4 and what they bring to the table but ain't voting for no Barbour.

Yall have one chance to get this right before you have to come to suburgatory. YOU DO NOT WANT TO LIVE IN SUBURGATORY.
Signed,
I live in suburgatory.

If Barbour wins, how much money will his wife steal?

I heard suburgatory was kinda nice.

8:38 Just what do you think the new Ward 1 Councilman will do to save Jackson? What was Quentin Whitwell able to accomplish? How much can anyone accomplish with the other yahoos on the Council?

Crime in Ward 1 has jumped off the charts over the past couple of years. Kingfish has shown us with his post about Broderick's multiple arrest/releases that not much is being done about it, even when the citizens and cops know who to watch for. My area has known about Brodrick and his running buddies for well over a year, during which several of them have been arrested multiple times. Guess what, the same perps still cruise by week after week looking for opportunities to make the rest of us victims.

I went to the forum. Dorsey comes across as very polished - he's obviously smart. I know his politics so i couldn't support him, but he is impressive for this type race.

Charles Barbour was equally good in his own way. He went through his record as supervisor for Hinds County and it's impressive. He looks to have a lot of support in the area.

Ashby Foote seemed to be intelligent but appears to be lost in this type environment. Politics is new to him, so that is an issue he will have to deal with.

Amile is a bright future and big ideas. Good he's in the race.

Thanks for the summaries since I didn't get to go. Did drive by on my way home after visiting Dad in the nursing home and was pleased to see a good turnout. The only one of these guys I know personally is Ashby, and while I appreciate his desire to serve the community, someone with more political savvy would probably be a better better.

Signed,
Live in NE Jackson and AIN'T moving to the 'burbs. (P.S. Go Dawgs and Hotty Toddy!)

Ashby was clearly the smartest one in the room. I thought he did much better than I expected. So did the doofus Charles Barbour.

Ashby is new to politics, but not new to public issues. Ashby has been President of the Bigger Pie Forum (www.biggerpieforum.org)which has exposed the bad effects of crony capitalism on Mississippi's economy (esp. the Kemper plant and Kior). He has been intelligent, thoughtful newsletter writer on public and economic issues for years.
Yes, Dorsey is both polished and smart.
Charles is intelligent.
We have some good choices here.

Amazing how quickly memories fade among my fellow Republicans in NE Jackson. The revisionist history that Charles Barbour was some pillar of leadership during his time on the Hinds County BOS is absurd. Doug Anderson ran roughshod over Charles Barbour.

The Democrats on the City Council are not going to work with the bombastic egotist Charles Barbour. They'll find accommodations with the other Republicans running in this special election but there is no way in hell they are going to work with Charles Barbour. No way in hell.

4:13 Yeah, maybe sending someone up to the City Council named Barbour ain't a generally a smart idea.

4:13 and 4:35 - Hello McDaniel supporters. We know you hate all things Cochran and Barbour, but remember how bad Cochran trounced your candidate in Hinds County. i think votes are still rolling in....

4:13 here. Sorry lamebrain. Voted for Cochran.

I am supporting Charles Barbour and you should too!

Sincerely

Will

In case you missed it, Sellers is really excited.

Anonymous said...

9:04 - LOL seems like Sellers is excited, but I think he is in it for the right reasons. I have some mutual friends of Sellers and from what I hear he is the real deal.

He was on Ben Allen's radio show Tuesday morning and was very impressive!

I personally know Charles.
He does seek the right balance for the public, and has high strong morals, in which Jackson needs to evolve.
He is a devout believer in the truth and listens and seeks God's will.
If I vote, it will surely be for Charles Barbour.
Think Holy, speak Holy and act Holy.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.

Jackson Jambalaya is the home of Trollfest '07. Catch this great event which promises to leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Sonjay Poontang and his band headline the night with a special steel cage, no time limit "loser must leave town" bout between Alan Lange and "Big Cat"Donna Ladd following afterwards. Kamikaze will perform his new song F*** Bush, he's still a _____. Did I mention there was no referee? Dr. Heddy Matthias and Lori Gregory will face off in the undercard dueling with dangling participles and other um, devices. Robbie Bell will perform Her two latest songs: My Best Friends are in the Media and Mama's, Don't Let Your Babies Grow up to be George Bell. Sid Salter of The Clarion-Ledger will host "Pin the Tail on the Trial Lawyer", sponsored by State Farm.
