Update: Sheriff Bailey said the dog was turned over to his department. Dog will be evaluated by a vet.
This video of a man spanking, beating, striking, hitting -whatever you want to call it- his dog made the social media rounds tonight:
Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey sent this message to JJ:
I am aware of the video and the concerns about the welfare of the animal. There is a legal process which must be followed in this case along with every criminal case. There is something that can be done about the animal and start the legal process. A report has been filed with the sheriff’s office, the next step is for the person who took the video or person who witnessed the incident to go to the Rankin County Justice Court when it opens at 8:00 AM and file charges against the suspect for misdemeanor animal cruelty. For those of you unfamiliar with our legal system, an officer cannot file charges against a person for a misdemeanor crime if it did not happen in the officer’s presence. Once the affidavit is filed it will be up to a judge to issue a warrant or not. In this case if a judge issues a warrant, the sheriff’s office will ask for a seizure order to take the animal, have it examined by a vet and held as evidence.
The best thing for everyone concerned is for the dog owner to surrender the dog.

Fucking asshole.
Seeing this just hurts my heart.
Is this how the "man" reacts when he becomes upset? Is this how he treats his children and wife? This poor dog has no choice but to take the blows from this maniac. The dog is a prisoner and a punching bag. I have no doubt this isn't the first time the dog has been beaten.
Clearly, the sicko has no impulse control and is a danger to all.
Someone please file charges and have the demon arrested- and the dog a new and loving home.
I hope the son of a b---- that beat this defenseless animal goes to jail for a few years. That will give his worthless a-- some time to think about who he wants to beat on next.
KF-please keep us updated on this story.
Hard to believe it's ib Rankin county. I suppose his wife wasn't home to take the beating.
I'm happy to start my day with this good news.
May the dog now find a home where love is abundant and life will be joyful.
As far as the "man", let justice stick in his craw for a long time.
He likely won't change his behavior. Often these types have behaved this way since childhood.
An Animal Abuser List should be developed that requires those convicted of crimes against animals to register and have no contact with any animals EVER.
Animal rescue organizations like Cheshire Abbey see this kind of horrific abuse all the time. The public is justifiably enraged, wishing all sorts of in-kind punishment for the abuser. Yet when it comes to sending a few bucks to the brave people who save these poor animals, we start looking at our watch and remembering we need to be somewhere else. Worse, when we try to get stronger anti-cruelty measures passed by the legislature, the people who complain the loudest when videos like this surface suddenly have too much to do to simply pick up the phone and call their representatives or drop them an e-mail. I'm fine with your anger, but DO something. Donate to the rescue of your choice and get behind the efforts to demand greater punishment for this type of behavior. Bill Billingsley
Thank you 8:25. That truly is the only way I can glean a positive from this. Many thanks also to the person who videotaped this abuse.
Sad thing is there is nothing stopping this lunatic from getting another dog free off of Craigslist before lunchtime today.
When you can legally do so, would you please release this guy's name? I'd have to think his employer would like to know what a psycho he has in his employ.
You can find his name in the story comments @ WLBT.
He should be treated the same way he treated this defenseless animal....times two. Does anyone know his address?
9:19 -- Thanks Bill! I might not agree with you politically at times, but you are absolutely correct in your summation on this topic.
I would wish this monster a slow and horrible death, involving but not limited to his shriveled balls being crushed in a mammogram machine (he will have to stand on a stool, but he can have a rope around his neck to steady him). If he hollers, make him pay---by kicking that stool out from under him. I would wish this, but unfortunately there is not a pit in Hell hot enough for him. So, yeah, 10:59, what you said. Throw his sorry ass in jail STAT.
There is a special place in Hell for folks that abuse their pets and children. Hope this man has a fast pass there.
And once again, no one is talking about how this is simply a misdemeanor and not a felony.
Our legislature did a piss poor job on this statute:
97-41-16
aggravated cruelty is punishable by 6 months in jail and/or $2,500 fine.
It's time Richard Wilson prosecute someone correctly for this. Give him the 6 months. The statute allows it yet no one ever gets it.
The difference between Hinds and Rankin. Rankin takes the dog and cares for it. In Jackson, Animal Control would just shoot it.
