Get caught with stolen guns, get a no-bill to pass Go and stay out of jail.

There was no small amount of controversy after JJ published a list of individuals that the Hinds County grand jury did not indict during its September session.  One particular case was that of Chirag Kharbanda (Not to be pronounced Kowabunga), the owner of the Jubilee gas station at 905 Northside Drive in Jackson.  He was charged with:

  • possession of a stolen firearm
  • 2 counts of possession of stolen goods
  • possession of a stolen gun
JJ obtained a copy of the police file through a public records request and posted it below.    The burglary unit of JPD  executed a search warrant on January 16, 2014. The police found a stolent handgun, stolen laptop computer, and a stolen flat screen tv.  The police charged Mr. Kharbanda with the charges mentioned above.  The raid was heavily reported in the media:

However, that was not Mr. Karbandah's last arrest.  The JPD executed another search warrant  on January 29 after the city discovered that Mr. Kharbanda was operating the business without a license.  The police officer noticed the "handle of a handgun" in plain view near the cash register.  The report states that he asked Mr. Kharbanda "if he knew anything about the gun.  Chirag Kharbanda informed Detective Harvey and Detective M. Martin that someone broke into this location about a week ago and left his gun inside the store and he decided to keep it for protection. "

The police ran the serial number and determined the handgun was stolen in Canton.  The police arrested Mr. Kharbanda. He informed JPD he was sick after he arrived at the holding facility.  He was moved to UMC.  The  grand jury declined to indict Mr. Kharbanda.

Should the grand jury have indicted Chirag Kharbanda? If not, who is responsible for the "no
bill"?   Here are the files. We report, you decide.

Everyone knows the DA is in the pocket of the Indian store owner community.

@ 10:21 - The word on the street is they give him exotic moisturizers from the Middle East and wax his eyebrows for free.

I have always heard that any DA worth his salt can get a grand jury to issue an indictment. So is the Hinds DA incompetent or corrupt?

There was a recent blog on the Indian Community (requiring security) where right winger zoomed in and started the race/racism/discrimination card defending the Indians.
Before food stamps were converted to electronic survey, they were stealing through that means. A few were caught, most were not. There was one on Terry Rd. caught buying a load of regular gas and selling it out of the premium tank. Many are known to buy low-grade diesel and sell it as gas. Some buy tobacco from out of state vendors to avoid/evade tobacco tax. Their reach is world wide. They communicate with friends/relatives throughout the nation and world to create ingenious ways to skirt legal, moral, and ethical conduct. Some will skirt back to India if caught. There were Indians who had a bank at Carthage, Ms. who were operating like the India/Indian banking system, but a Federal Agency soon shut it down, and the location is now, or was run, by Trustmark. It is a never ending problem with these people. Of course some of them are being coached, trained, or taught by mafia style Americans.

I wasn't on this grand jury so I can't speak about this case, but when I served the assistant DA always kind of prodded us to vote true bill or no bill on most of the cases. It was always clear what they wanted us to do.

Of course it was no billed.. How do the police prove who got the stuff? Could had been anyone of the three employees there at the time or some other worker/family/friend. Obviously they couldn't prove who stole the items (grand larceny) and on a receiving stolen goods the State has to prove the person in possession "knew or should have known" that the items were stolen. In short JPD couldnt prove who possessed the items, who stole the items or if anyone knew the items in question were stolen..

Wasn't there an Indian oncologist who lived in Madison and watered down the chemotherapy drugs? She tried to flee to India when the warrants came down but they pulled her passport and I'm pretty sure she's doing time somewhere in the state.

I don't know about Madison, but there was one south of Jackson, in a small town, I want to say Summit, doing the illegal chemo therapy.

Just like a buncha fuckin' gypsies in wagons transversing the old west.

One thing you don't know is how many of the Mr. Patels out there have cameras in the rooms at the flea trap motels. And you stay in them periodically. (Best Value for White Man)

@11:57
Um... "right winger" I would say "left winger".

11:57 yep your right. I banked heavily there and saw PLENTY of turbans coming and going. Sethi was funding his personal development projects from his bank which he bought from whomever the old man in Carthage was. They were shut down by FDIC for severe mismanagement and I can personally testify to that. I cannot understand why he has not been brought to justice!

Yes, it was left wing. My bad, I caught that after posting, but of course could not retract/correct it. Thank you.

Another anonymous f'ing idiot @ JJ who wants to be taken seriously.

That's her - lived in Madison, worked somewhere else. Ruined a bunch of lives because, well, oncologists just don't make enough if they practice honestly.

How did this turn into a generalized, racist discussion about the Mississippi Indian community?

There are plenty of hardworking, honest, great people here from India working in our IT sector, hospitals, law, and yes, even at gas stations just to name a few things.

Some of you should be embarrassed by the generalizations written above.

Sometimes I let people show how stupid they can be or how they really feel. However, the comments about Sethi are spot on. Parkway PIDs stuck the taxpayers with a huge problem, Heritage bank failed and FDIC had to step int. How much money have taxpayers had to cough up for his failures?

Them "hardworking, honest, great people here from India working in our IT sector" are here on HB-1 Visas getting paid 55-65% of what the previous professionals in the job got paid. That vast army of unemployed previous professionals would happily agree to a home country discount and accept those jobs at 55-65% but, alas, the establishment Republicans and US Chamber of Commerce would rather not employ American citizens instead opting to continue renting the "hardworking, honest, great people here from India" to work in our IT sector.

They've gutted the professional IT jobs, they gutted the manufacturing jobs, what could Haley and his cronies plan to gut next? Hmmmmm.

10:01 you've been warned/cautioned. As Sun Tsu taught, "keep one eye to the rear".

10:01 Here.

KingFish, my sentiments were more directed towards some of the more generalized clearly ignorant statements--not to argue the validity about what happened with the person you mentioned.

12:00, I'm actually a management consultant and happen to work with the people in question that you are talking about.

I think it's hilarious that you probably call yourself a conservative, and yet, here you are asking that the government force a company to subsidize its productivity and competitiveness in the marketplace because "DEYYY TOOK ERRR JERRRBS!!"

In my experience, the IT guys from India are leaps and bounds ahead of the guys around here technically, and they work 12 hour day work weeks without complaining when our projects have demanded it.

The problem is not with bringing in talent into our country. Our competitive advantage as a country has always been our willingness to have a "free market" of human capital (ie a country a immigrants.)

Until we (and you) are ready to admit that our "enjoy your college experience" culture is just not producing enough sound human capital and can breed laziness and entitlement in our workforce (I just want to do what makes me happy!), I can't help you.

12:17, I have no idea what you are talking about.

10.06 I agree.

The passive allowance of the most outrageous "bigotry porn" on this blog goes way beyond what is acceptable discourse among descent people.

I raised the issue on another, similar thread, and received no support. One guy said it was just a "cultural issue" that had something to do with Hollywood and "main stream media" unfairly painting Mississippians as ignorant bigots.

Judging from these pages, they do not need to outsource their paint jobs.

Anonymous said...

6:28 Before trashing Mississippians as ignorant please realize that some of us know the difference between "descent" and "decent".

Maybe you should get some of these imported IT experts to tweak your spell-check.

Anonymous said...

7:47

Actually the spell checker on my phone changed "decent"to "descent". It does that sometimes, and the line had already scrolled up before I hit the send button.

It is a little bit ironic that you can't criticize my spelling without reaching to make a bigoted remark about "imported IT experts".

Nothing to see folks. No ignorance or bigotry here...

Anonymous said...

9:49 Well of course - every spell checker takes words that are spelled correctly and changes them. Happens all the time.

And for the record - I have helped recruit and been proud and happy to work with many foreigners. IMHO the Africans are generally brighter and harder working than Indians, Poles and Chinese, but that may be influenced by the sample size. Each group has had people who are much more productive than many Mississippians, FWIW. And the topic of this thread has been about Indians, particularly IT workers, for several posts now. Stick your sanctimonious smugness where the sun don't shine and try to keep up.

It is a cultural issue from my "bigoted" perspective. Have you ever heard of 'multiculturalism' or for that matter heard of American Culture/ southern culture/( insert subset culture here). From these different cultures, or rather, mental constructs comes friction from inherent differences. Since I'm not really a bigot and I am a decent person we can agree to disagree, right?
--------------------------------------------------------
The culture aspect is not to take away from racial issues that do exist to this day, but rather, to point out that all things simply cannot be blamed on racial issues that happen in an interracial society. More onto the issue at hand and on topic is the fact that we live in a multicultural society comprised of many races and thought forms, in which, there are many religions.

It's so easy to generalize issues as racist or bigoted. It becomes much more complex when you see the sheer reality of it all in a broader context.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
