So Haley is all for abolishing the U.S. Dept. of Education. Well if the department is abolished, how would it give out education funds? Wouldn't the end result be the exact same as what he is criticizing McDaniel for?

Haley Barbour's response is disingenuous.
Haley Barbour supported a plank in the 2012 Republican Party platform calling for the abolishment of the federal Department of Education. There was no exception in that plank for the federal funding of education flowing through the department.

In fact, in defense that part of the Republican platform, Barbour said, “Being for getting rid of the department certainly doesn’t mean you want to get rid of public education." He added at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast in Washington, "It means getting rid of a federal intermediary so state and local governments can operate without a giant bureaucracy.”

So why is Barbour, who is now a Washington lobbyist and a Common Core supporter, now criticizing McDaniel for taking the position he once held and defended?

Look, I've drank Wild Turkey with Haley. Haley is a poltician's politician. He was part of the new power Republicans that decided that progressivism was the thing keeping Democrats in power. Modern Republicans want big government just as much as Democrats, they just want it for different reasons.

Anyone who has followed the issue is aware that proponents of the abolition of the Federal Department of Education would disperse the funds directly to the States in the form of block grants. Pretty simple concept

I believe there are a lot of federal programs that need to be eliminated - Fanny & Freddie, Federal Student Loans, Payments to farmers, dept of education. The feds are in lots of things they have no business doing. That does not mean you just cut them off one day with no plan for transition. I'd say take 3 years to auction off all the home loans loan guarantees that Fanny and Freddie have. It might take ten years to phase out farm payments. But in the end farm products should cost whatever the free market determines and we will pay that and eliminate the tax payments and bureaucrats. Haley doesn't believe for one second that the dep. of ed would be eliminated without some transition plan. This is going to be a big problem with cutting the government back to a reasonable size - the wailing and gnashing of teeth will be loud and long. We must realize that on the front end. We also must realize that the country cannot survive in the long run in with this bloated government.

Save us Chris. Cut everything. We will find a way. We can pay more local taxes when the Feds don't support us anymore. You are the answer. @11:45pm has drank the tea. No one wants anymore toxic home loans. With another price increase of 3% on basic goods and services, another 10-15 million homes would go into foreclosure. Should we end farm payments, the individual family farm would go the way of the dinosaur overnight. That is exactly what Thad is out educating people about this week. Neither you or McDaniel have any idea what a farm bill or farm subsidy actually are.

You still have not accepted in the new America a couple with one public school teacher and one "manly" job such as skilled labor will never again be able to afford a $275,000 new house, a new Tahoe & a 4 door truck again. That family is with two or three kids will require public assistance this decade. Better it be the GOP handing out that assistance. This way the people learn not to bite the hand that feeds them.

I don't think you tea party types understand that's the future. So we owe $17 trillion today, I bet it will be close to $30 trillion by 2020. Sovereign debt is endless. And if needed with one executive order the President could cancel that debt if need be.

And for the love of God drop the immigration line. They are here to stay. Learn Spanish if you would like your lawn mowed, your child watched, need a nurse aid or plan to buy anything at Home Depot, walmart or McDonald's by 2025. It's an endless supply of cheap labor. Managed correctly, it could be a boom for our economy long term. You just have to get rid of the people that once did those jobs. Comes back to population control. There are many gene pools that need to dry up in our state. The wrong people are having kids. Don't worry it's all be worked out.

And watch as we fundamentally change the Christian church in a generation. We already have your kids. We don't need you. KF- re: your note: there is a big difference between saying that we shouldn't cut 25 percent of the state's education budget and being for full funding of MAEP. How big of a difference? More than a billion dollars a year. To criticize Haley for saying there is a middle ground that is a logical conservative position is absurd.

Haley held the line on education spending as governor when a lot of republicans and democrats said a tax increase was inevitable because of the bad budget he inherited from musgrove. That's what conservatives do - they fight to get better results for the money we spend. But it does take some money to run schools and to cut 800 million a year is not feasible.

Even McDaniel basically said we needed to spend that money. But mcdaniels solution was for the state and local governments to pay for it. What taxes does Mcdaniel want to raise? It would take a heck of an income tax increase to raise 800 million.

Comparing large corporate farm interests, like Monsanto, ADM etc to the small farmer - who has more influence on language in the farm bills? Who has lawyers and accountants to spend untold hours looking for loopholes in the federal rules? The politicians always make stuff very very complex and that always favors the large businesses. Example in another industry - as the Feds use Obomacare to take over even more of the nation's healthcare, what are the doctors doing? By the thousand doctors are selling their businesses to hospitals. Why? Cause the doctors don't have the time or manpower to keep up with the ever changing maze of rules that is Obomcare. It is exactly the same with family farms except that it has been happening for so long that we have forgotten that the federal government is to blame.

The 2012 plank to the Republican platform supported by Haley Barbour was a proposed plank. Ultimately, it was not adopted despite Barbour's support for it.

There was an adopted plank in the Republican platforms from 1980 to 1996 advocating eliminating the Department of Education. There was no exception for education funding flowing though the department. US Senator Thad Cochran never once voiced opposition to that plank. McDaniel's father was a professor at Jones County Junior College and his mother retired from the college in 1995. He attended the Jones County Public Schools as well as Ole Miss Law School. His wife, Jill, was a public school teacher, employed with the Ellisville Elementary School for 10 years before the birth of their two children. The McDaniel's eight-year-old son attends public school in Jones County. Their three-year-old-son is not yet in school.

Where do you think the money comes from anyway? Cut federal spending, and the associated federal taxes that fund said spending, and the people of Mississippi will have enough money to pay for their own public education. The money has to come from somewhere.

2:51, even if it worked out how McDaniel said, it would still be a terrible deal. MS keeping more of its tax revenue in exchange for less federal funding would result in less money available for education. The only way that wouldn't be true is if this state sent more money to DC than we got in return. We all know the opposite is true. McDaniel's deal is bad for MS, and it is especially bad for our next generation of children. If you care about them, you will reconsider voting for that guy. Some of you seem so hasty to vote for change, in whatever form, that you're reminiscent of a certain national election back in 2008.

He is concerned about a new project “One Lake” – the metro areas long-running flood-control/development effort which will need federal funds to get off the ground. Now why would a SENATE race have anything to do with Socrates???? Hhmmm… But wait he’s the newspaper publisher right? No wait he’s a contractor – yes, since waaayyy back to….Katrina right? “HINT..HINT” read between the lines here. Could he have been the prime contractor that was initially hired for the grant funding during Katrina? Could he have been the contractor that subcontracted work to the coast during this time? Could he have been given preferential treatment? His name just keeps popping up everywhere lately. He was noted in an article during the mayoral race referencing H.B. and Socrates and now in an article about the Senate Race? I’ll use that great term that the NY journalist used “extravagantly weird”. And… doesn’t he do a lot of rural water contract work for the rural water associations which are largely funded by grant funding (state/fed) accompanied with the low interest rate loans thru Ag/Rural Development? And through research the SOS office had him noted as in the “newspaper industry” about 3 yrs ago then a couple of months after the BIG rural water grant that MS was ‘so fortunate’ to obtain mainly with Thad’s support (and G. Harper’s), his industry category was conveniently revised to add contracting (for water line construction). DEQ had him listed as the contractor – I’ve only seen one contract scanned in their system for rural water contracts – and maybe someone accidentally scanned this one through? And since he’s a minority contractor is this a shoe-in for a grant funded project to omit the bid process? Were bids solicited? What does HE know about water line laying? Or maybe he subcontracts the work out to pre-selected contractors? Why is he listed as a prime contractor when their is grant funding available? Does his paper support republicans or democrats – or both? It’s interesting that no other competitive contractors are up in arms about this? Shouldn’t we be sharing the pie? As I was once told by a Madison Central Athletic Director in the 90's that merged Flora to Madison so he would have a better football team, "football keeps kids from dropping out of school" Excuse me mister, your football team GPA is "D" so how can they play with a "D"? What incentive do they have to do better? Mister said "This is all they have" - YEP, and now it's 2014 and we are supporting the majority of them either by sitting at home or sitting in jail. Nothing against football but our athletic h.s. football coaches and the MS H. S. Association only care about their team winnings and justification for their jobs. And yes, passing them through does happen - don't think for one minute it does not! In addition, at that time, the athletic director was able to keep all of his game revenue for the athletic dept. Do any of you realize how much money this was? A LOT! Does the athletic director FULLY fund his entire program? The facilities, the fields, the maintenance, the employees, the utility bills, equipment, retirement programs, fringe, and salaries of employees (incl workman comp, fringe, benefits, insurance)? Big Fat NO it's not! I'm not sure if things have changed but it needs to. Education is a backseat to FOOTBALL and has always been but nothing will change unless these players put Education as a priority and that starts with the coaches. The other areas of athletics (baseball, etc) are pennies compared to the football programs. Will these kids make a living playing ball? A minute percentage.

936 - Yep, Farm Bill does not help small family farms. The Farm Bill only helps RICH landowners and BIG FARM operations. If the small farmer does get a subsidy the landowner keeps in touch with the local FSA office and increases the rent by that amount. So either the small farmer can cease his lease or lose it to someone else - can't compete with the gov't that pays the landowner to pay them "free" money for set aside, plant it in pine trees, or whatever other program that Thad helps them with. SO either THAD is not in touch with the real world or maybe he IS aware of what he's doing. I just don't know. So he can wear his farmer shirt and jeans to campaign for the vote. BUT I'm not voting for him that's for sure! These big landowners have become very wealthy and I'm not really sure if folks realize how wealthy they are getting off of our tax dollars! CM Voter for sure!!!

Responding to 8:53's football analogy. You seem fond of avoiding context. It's true that extra-curricular activities DO keep some students interested and attending school. That includes ROTC, Band, Athletics, choir, etc. Nobody, including the gentleman you misquote, would suggest you merge schools to put poorly performing students on the football team.

No school sacrifices it's district education program at the alter of a football team. Student athletes at Madison never have had a D average and you know it. That was a lie. They don't suit up with D's.

And to your groan about the merger, that allowed two other important things. First, it kept the Justice Department's ass out of Madison County by further integrating (dumbing down) the High School and, Second, it no doubt kept a helluva lot of Flora kids from dropping out had they remained in Flora.
