State Auditor Stacey Pickering issued the following press release:
Former Southaven Mayor Guilty
JACKSON-
District Attorney John Champion announced today that former Southaven
Mayor Greg Davis has been found guilty on one count of making false
representations to defraud the government and one count of embezzlement.
Champion stated, “I am very pleased with the verdict and am glad DeSoto County jurors held him accountable for his actions.”
Davis
falsely represented he had the authority as a government official to
purchase a vehicle leased by the City of Southaven at the contract price
for the city. According to the contract, the City, not an individual,
could purchase the vehicle for $10,000 at the conclusion of the two year
lease.
He also used city gas pumps to put gasoline in his personal vehicle. Sentencing is set for July 10, 2014.
“This
has been a long investigation and process but I am pleased with today’s
ruling and hope it will bring some closure to the citizens of
Southaven,” Auditor Pickering said. “I would like to thank District
Attorney John Champion for his hard work and dedication to this case.”

Too bad he won't hold Robert Graham to the same standard. Maybe Greg Davis has some vacation days he can turn in, too.
If Davis were a black dude, Ed Blackmon and The Ghost of Chokwe would be screaming RACISM from the rafters!
He only stole pocket change, like the Scott sisters. Leave the boy be.
Investigate all grant recipients (outside of state agencies) FIRST I think this is where most of the corruption is?
Why 'outside of state agencies'? I've seen millions of dollars of grant money wasted and misspent by state agencies.
One example: A state agency oversaw a literacy program with a grant to teach reading. That sounds like a good idea, right? But, consider this: The enrollees were residents of a nursing home in Rolling Fork.
The subcontractor grant recipient pocketed several hundred thousand while the state agency overseeing the grant did periodic audits. And not a damned soul 'learned to read'.
I talked to a couple at dinner last night who live in Southaven. They reminded me that this is just the first wave. The feds have Davis by the balls and were waiting for this conviction to come down before nailing him to the wall. If it looks to some of you like he'll get six months and five probation, think again. How about Seven Years to serve with ten probation and an agreement to never seek public office again?
We live a long way from Southaven, and know nobody there. So, could somebody bring us up to speed? Is Davis really a crook? Or is he being railroaded, because he was the mayor of a whiteopia?
Or, is it a little of both?
