| Mary Cole confronts a Cochran supporter |
Ms. Cole is a 71 year-old retired teacher and resident of Starkpatch. She told JJ she was coming home from Philadelphia when she received a call from a lady in Starkpatch. The woman said she was sitting in the Captain D's parking lot watching some people tear down Chris McDaniel signs at the corner by Montomery Street and Highway 12 and start waving Thad Cochran signs in their place. The woman took pictures of the alleged vandalism. Ms. Cole said she arrived 15 minutes after she received the phone call.
Ms. Cole said "I called Gary Chesser of the Starkville Tea Party and told him what was happening. I didn't want to talk to anyone until he got there." She said there were two guys and two girls involved. The two guys appeared to be young adults or college students and the two girls seemed to be young teen-agers. Ms. Cole said she and another man confronted the two young squires about the destruction and disappearance of the McDaniel signs. She said one of them stated he "didn't know anything about signs being torn up. He was just there holding up signs. He told us 'what are you going to do? Arrest these two little girls? I said well, what are you doing? using little girls to do your dirty work? He said I don't know what you are talking about."
Mr. Chesser called the police as the guy was about to get in his jeep to leave. Ms. Cole said she saw their torn-up signs in the back of his jeep. Mr. Chesser again confronted him and demanded he provide the signs. Police officer Pedro Yera arrived and talked to both parties. She said the police told her to take back her signs and said "if I have to come back, I'm taking all of the signs down."
Ms. Cole said "We have radicals on both sides. People who some of them want to make a name for themselves, others want to do something that helps but wind up doing something that hurts."

Ridiculous, but a pimple on the backside of the sign thievery that took place at the polling places early Tuesday morning. Sign stealing is SOP for some of these guys...

Wonder if the Cochran (Barbour) camp will pressure the Oktibbeha County DA to arrest the lady that took pictures of the girls defacing the signs. Let's see, what felonies can we charge her with? Whatever charges we can find that "apply", make sure the judge sets at least a million dollar bond!
Neither campaign is supposed to be putting signs up at intersections. Technically, removing those McDaniel signs is analogous to picking up litter and then littering yourself.
If the signs were on private property, it would be a different matter. Different, but still incredibly insignificant.

Pedro's response was unprofessional,not what one would expect from a Starkville Police Officer.Removing the signs was a violation of the law,and should have been treated as such.I am quite sure Ms. Cole felt the officers response was inappropriate. What is the official response from the Starkville Police Dept.

As if signs are going to pursuade voters in the first place. I passed a church in Madison about fifteen times on election day and saw a guy slumped in a lawn chair on Hoy Road holding up a cochran sign. He was there at 7 a.m., noon, mid afternoon and right before poll closing.
And of course there were a hundred other signs stuck in the ground. Who the hell goes to vote and decides based on signs?
Are we really tilting at the windmills of whose response was appropriate or inappropriate or what the police did or said. What meaningless drivel.
This is normal operating procedure for the Cochran camp! In the Rankin county area signs are being stolen faster than you can put them out. I'm talking from the small to the large 4 x 6's right out of people's yards and on private property. It is a huge waste of time and money. They should have arrested them to make an example. They are going to go on the wrong persons property and get hurt. It is illegal!
After reading what these 'young people' were involved in...though petty in some people's eyes, but still a violation of the law (destruction of another's property, regardless of value)...it is no wonder why our Country is in the 'MESS' it is in - not because of these 'petty' actions (destruction of property and repeated lying remarks), but because of the apathy and sarcasm evidenced in some of the reader's comments. Some way to train up our young people to be good citizens! Good luck with that!

Attention Cochran supporters, You would do well to read and heed the 11:45 post. I live in Rankin County and have Chris McDaniel signs on my property. Now, y'all think about this, since I am posting as anonymous you have no idea as to where this property is. If I should catch you taking down my signs I can promise you that you will not like the consequences. To speak to you in my best "redneck" dialect, so that you can understand. I will give you a serious butt kicking and then have you arrested.
I guess this is a real concern for a campaign who raised a mere $40,000 in-state. I'd also suggest that the pollutive aspect of your sign-placing strategy -- finding a spot you like and dumping a half dozen signs there -- is at least as much of your problem as what your signs say.
Meanwhile Rickey Cole is watching all this and experiencing an arousal he hasn't felt since November 2008, and Travis Childers is familiarizing himself with Jackson to DC (and vice versa) flight schedules. Thanks GOP extremists!

Folks, for those young folks to walk out there, tear up the signs without thinking anything of it, is unbelievable! For them to not know they were doing wrong baffles my mind. As some posters pointed it... It wasn't the middle of the night. Their consciences were not even phased by the wrong they were committing in broad daylight.
If I had been a cop, I would have sat all three down and given them a strong talking to and a very real warning.... "Cross me, shame on you, cross me twice shame on me... and if you cross us twice, I will show no mercy so start walking on egg shells in this county!"
There were McDaniel signs torn down in Gluckstadt also. There was a Cochran supporter, waving signs at the polling place, when asked about it, she commented. " I had nothing to do with that."
So, McDaniel supports are jumping all over this, but think it's ok to sneak in courthouses & nursing homes. ADULTS tied to his campaign did those things, but college kids tore up signs. Not the it's right, but come on! McDaniel needs to shut up trashing Cochran & run on what he can do for our state. He's losing supporters by the day from being so negative.
At least they did it in broad daylight - not under the cloak of darkness sneaking around at midnight like a bunch of thugs! Wait - that's what they are - a former drunk and wife beater among the three - guess which one?
@7:10am, no threatening, just saying. Where I live you don't want to be caught simply trespassing! It's not wise and dangerous. No matter the candidate they support, I'm proud they are attempting to be a part of the process. That's why we as a country we are in the mess we are in is because of apathy! But there is a right way to do things and a wrong way. I would be furious with my child for doing something of this nature. It's not worth the risk. There is a WW2 veteran who sits with his American flag in my area and the disrespect he is shown is staggering. These young people need to learn respect and manners. And I appreciate your keeping it classy with the spice girl tea bagger comment. And we wonder why our children are like they are and our country is going down the tubes!
Has anyone else noticed that we have not heard Thad speak to amount to anything during the whole campaign beyond a recorded "I'm Thad Cochran and I approve this message"?

You Thad supporters go ahead and flame me, but he refused to debate and he doesn't speak at functions where you would expect him to speak. He sent Greg Harper to speak for him on election night. It just makes me wonder what is going on with him.
My takeaway here is all DoucheBag-oriented events seem to happen in starkville.

This thread is meaningless. I've been involved in Thad's campaign here in Rankin County from day one. Just today, I reset a 4 x 4 Thad sign someone had cut and thrown to the ground. I also noticed a "Retire Cochran", placed right in front of a Thad sign on private property (where the McDaniel camp had no permission to place). On election day, we had all the Thad signs removed at three precincts in Florence. Do I call the police? No, I'm not looney tunes. I'm a realist. I understand this is a hotly contested race. You reload and soldier on.

My husband saw a woman with a small child rip up a McDaniel sign today in Rankin County. She was a little taken aback when she saw him coming.

Those students are students from Starkville High School... One is a student my son taught.... They would not be out there unless there was MONEY involved....
Lazy students that students that did not care to make good grades... I believe these signs are private property and on private property... The students need to also remove themselves from the said property because it is against Starkville Laws.... Cannot be with 25 feet of an intersection.... Read the LAWS... Cochran...
