I would not call this a landslide you guys are acting like he took it... well, maybe he did take it (one way or another). I'm absolutely disgusted with the way Cochran won this race. However, I won't cut off my nose to spite my face and vote for Childers. But you can bet there are some things I will do:

1. Work for a constitutional amendment for closed primaries.

2. Work for a constitutional amendment to change how Mississippi fills U.S. Senate vacancies -- election rather than gubernatorial appointment.

3. Support any true conservative independent or third-party challenger to Bryant, Reeves, Hosemann, Chaney, Pickering, Fitch and Hyde-Smith for the rest of their prayerfully short careers.

The other guy's appalling lack of accomplishments in his current job, his lack of a plan to explain just exactly what spending he would cut (and how he would do it),coupled with his clearly stated determination not to cooperate or compromise with the other 99 senators if he disagrees with them, made him a non-starter in my book. He also gave me that stereotypical used car salesman vibe.

We are heading for an inevitable financial crunch when the markets realize the country owes more than it can pay. When they stop lending we will have a severe retrenchment in the federal budget, and I am glad Cochran will presumably be leading the Appropriations Committee and look out for our state's best interests, as opposed to having the senator from Alabama using that position to look out for his constituents.

Thad's win proves what we have seen over and over for decades - folks get to Washington and buy our votes with our money and somehow we lack the will to stop it. I think term limits will be critical to saving us from ourselves. But if there ever was a grassroots fight term limits is it. It will take a massive uprising of the people to throw out the career politicians.

If what I saw in Hinds county is any indication, quite a bit of the cross over vote was college age and those able to vote for the first time.
There were 6 young people and me when I voted and I saw young people standing with Thad signs in the rain at two precincts I passed on the way to work.
I also would suggest you look at the female vote percentages.
Do remember, the Chism poll , as he pointed out were land lines.
Those of you who imagine all people of color are wedded to the Democratic party forget they know the GOP was once the party of Mr. Lincoln and don't seem to understand they support many GOP positions in issue based surveys. Many are church goers.
The increase in turnout was an anti-McDaniel, anti-Tea Party vote. This is actually the second Tea Party defeat in MS if any of you remember the Parenthood referendum.

My bet is McDaniel will continue to show his ass today. One reason I didn't vote for him, other than my main reason that he hadn't accomplished anything in the state senate, is that he looked and sounded sleazy. Plenty of McDaniel supporters are now attacking the open primary system... only because they lost. I don't know how many of these people are Jackson residents, but as a Jacksonian I LOVE the open primary. As a republican, I would neot be able to vote for the de facto mayor of the city unless the democratic primary was open - the primary allows my voice to be heard. It's the same story with State Senate elections. No chance in hell that a democrat is winning the general election, so what is so wrong about allowing democrats to voice their opinions in the de facto election, the Republican primary?

I was alternately appalled and amused listening to McDaniel's speech last night.
He " joined " the GOP at 13? He did so because his daddy said, " I guess we're Republicans"?
Then he admits he no longer identifies with the GOP as " it left him".
He goes on to list the issues he said weren't " extreme". Unfortunately, he forgot that he didn't campaign with any specificity on those issues and worse, named patriotism as an " issue". He thus implied that only the Tea Party is patriotic and loves this country. That's not an " issue", that's an insult to every GOP and Democrat who fought for our country from a man who could have and chose not to do so.
And, he can't help but try to also claim Christianity for the Tea Party as if there are no Black churches and no church going Democrats.

Now I read in these blogs how McDaniel supporters will not vote GOP ever again. One can only conclude that their vote wasn't about reducing debt, reducing government or fiscal conservatism or Christian conservatism after all.

What does that leave? I suppose the hope that Childers will marginalize himself and be uncooperative within his stated party of preference and be content to sit on inconsequential committees.

I would suggest to all the Tea Party that if you want to fix a car that isn't running well, the first thing you need to do is learn auto mechanics. Otherwise, your uninformed " tinkering" will likely break more than it fixes!

So far, that's all we've gotten from the TPs, an unrealistic approach so that instead of health care reform, we have Obamacare. Instead of Immigration reform, we have a fence that isn't working. Instead of fiscal reform , we have sequester with cuts where cuts shouldn't be and a lower rating. And, we have constant arguing, stalemate and no solutions to serious problems. And, when it comes to taxes, your record on federal taxes is ok, but did you miss that state and local taxes increased and increased in ways that hurt the already hurting middle class even more?

Ted Cruz was given an opportunity to criticize the open primary system in Mississippi this morning on Fox News. He didn't do it, and instead said that it happens all the time and it is "just politics". I found it interesting that he never campaigned for, or endorsed, McDaniel. I am not a political expert, but I do not feel that the democratic party is going to spend a lot of money to challenge Thad in the general election.

I think most of us would agree that Democrats put Thad over the top. Nothing illegal about it. I find it very interesting that Fox News headline reads 'Bad night for Democrats'. Our senate race is discussed in some detail. If you believe Fox, these Democrats were voting against their own interest. Fox thinks like many on this site that McDaniel might have lost in November. Evidently the Democrats who voted for Thad agree with me, McDaniel would have won in November. He would have been a weaker candidate, but running against Oboma's record should be a piece of cake for anybody.

@9:24 has a good point. With Democrats trying to defend seats in at least 4 hotly contested states (Arkansas and Louisiana being 2 of them), I don't think they'll dump much money into Mississippi. However, a lot depends on how dramatic the hard-right Republicans are for the next few weeks and whether McDaniel is willing to "Let It Go" (see what I did there?) or whether he makes a spectacle of himself for a while longer.

First, great job KF on covering this. Second, I do think you and Gallo leaned establishment a bit on this one but you're entitled and I like it when people are up front. At least the RINOs will now understand that they have to start paying more attention to the middle and lower-middle instead of full attention to the upper and the businesses. I, for one, am a businessman and vet and I'm canceling my three Chamber memberships because of their positions on illegals and the rule-of-law. I'm sick of the government because I understand how they operate and the ridiculous burdens they place on people like me who employ people and who provide taxes. So Haley, Trent, Rove, Thad, Phil, and the other folks firmly committed (and profiting) from the lobbyists need to quit wetting their beaks and focus on small business and the taxpayers. Yes, the "Tea Party" should start thinking about better people to organize and should put duct tape on a few of those gals who, for some strange reason, are allow to act as spokespersons. But hopefully the puppeteers in DC will get the message that folks are serious about the debt, the constitution and the hordes flooding our borders (some of which are freakin' terrorists you idiot Dems). I keep hearing McDaniel people and in particular Tea Party people discussing a write-in option for Chris McDaniel in November. They all need to do some research. Pursuant to MS Code § 23-15-365, names written in on the ballot are only considered in the event of the death, resignation, withdrawal, or removal of a candidate officially printed on the ballot. It just goes to show you that these out-of-state Tea Party people that brought in so much money do not even know and/or care about our laws. And FYI: this law is actually enforceable (and would be enforced by SOS).

Note to 8:47 We have been using professional auto mechanics for our politicians for decades. We believe the results have been disastrous. The only solution seems to be that the people must put the fear of God into them. I. E. if you don't try to reduce the size of the federal government we will replace you with someone who will. Will some 'good china' be broken in the process? Damn right. We cannot do this by being neat and clean. But it must be done to save the country. James Webb was a first rate " mechanic". Many of the Contract with America people you voted in were first as well, but you let your own party defeat them in primaries when they wouldn't drink the party Kool Aid.

There are no angels on the either side of the aisle. But, the real problem is that the good guys who would vote their conscience are run off by their own party.

You want good government. Start with meaningful election reform that can't be overturned. For example, pass a law that says no candidate in a State or local election can accept a contribution from any individual or business that doesn't pay taxes within the area they are to represent. Pass a law that any money given to a PAC must be spent on national elections unless that PAC exclusively operates only in the state or local community of the candidate they wish to support.
Demand the House eliminate all exceptions to The Stock Act not specifically excepted in the act.
Demand Congress get rid of the " Leadership Foundation".
Support zero based budgeting and line item veto. Require every agency to report every 4 years program success or failure.
Demand that every judge appointed to the Supreme Courts and District Courts have to have gone to an accredited law school and graduated in the top 25% of their class and have had to practice law at least 10 years or be tenured at an accredited law school.

I could go on...and on...and on...

We didn't get in this mess in one or two administrations. It'll take time to fix.

But, it STARTS with voters being informed.

So require Civics and Political Science and Philosophy to be taught in every high school for starters. And, American history should be divided in to Early and Post 20th Century.

At least the electorate might then at least have common definitions of words!

Don't know what state the electoral genius at 7:06 was registered in, but in Mississippi we have never had party registration and always had the right to vote in either party primary. The total ignorance of many voters is scary - particularly when it comes to conduct of elections.

But this ought not surprise us. The "Constitutional candidate" McDaniel - the chairman of the State Senate Elections Committee - obviously doesn't either. Heard him today on two talk shows saying he 'hadn't decided' on whether to start a write-in campaign. Showed his ignorance again, or his total disregard of the law - take your pick. Write in votes are not counted in Mississippi unless the other candidates have all died or withdrawn.
