this may sound far out and I don't know how old the coaches were however I think there needs to be an age limit on teachers for the students they teach or coach. when you have a new grad teacher that is about 22 years old teaching 18 or 19 yr old teenagers, they are not much older than the students they teach. I think new young grads need to teach elementary school an older ones need to teach high school. this would probably eliminate many of the problems that we have with student/teacher relationships. it would be nice to have statistics of the ages of teachers and student relationships that have occurred in the past. this is no excuse by any means but these young teachers may be dating the same age as the students they teach. of course this would be common sense so it would never fly. they need to have very strict guidelines and punishment on this!

Good intentions, but not possible. Teachers have to select subject areas while they are in college. If you teach Early Ed, and then want to teach high school, it requires additional certification.

Perhaps better/more oversight by administrators would help. Too many principals sitting on their butts in their offices all day, instead of visiting classrooms throughout the day.

Mississippi has a code of professional ethics and standards of conduct for teachers that covers this situation. Very stringent and allows the state to suspend or revoke a teacher's license. Does not require criminal conviction. Every teacher signs off on it annually.

I was with these coaches for a majority of my child's past year, and I even asked her if at any time during the year if she had seen/witnessed anything inapropriate and she looked at me and said, "No, of course not." You shouldn't make accusations with only the statement of a minor.

Well this sucks. I am a current student there and this fall starts my senior year, either way, all the good veteran teachers have left. Ridgeland was a place where the staff there actually wanted you to learn and become someone in the future. Now because of lack of discipline and guidance towards the new classes, all the good motivated teachers have left, even the principal and asst. principal are gone. Now its just about graduating, not becoming something big, just simply getting the diploma & getting the heck out of there. If this is true, who ever they are I'm sure they're one of the new staff fresh out of college and the student is more than likely a freshman from the age mentioned. Without any actual knowledge, I would guess that LE has more than just the minor's statement. Usually, there are cellphone records of calls, text messages, photos and other information. I would be surprised if they didn't investigate the case thoroughly before getting to this point.

Actually, I am a student at this school, these coaches were great to everyone, they loved these girls. It is very surprising to find out that these things happen at our school. Our school has been having issues and know this is making us look worse. Thanks!

I've seen accusations like this springing up all over the country. About 1/3 of them end up being a kid who wanted attention or who got their feelings hurt and they don't care if it ruins people's lives in the process. But in every case the teacher/coach is ruined no matter if they are guilty or not. Mainly because people like many of the posters here just assume he/she is guilty before you know the facts. If this is another one of those cases, I hope those coaches sue the crap out of everyone involved. There needs to be a consequence to these kids ruining people's lives just for some attention. Like I said this is the case about 1/3 of the time so they may in deed be guilty. But just wait for the facts to come out before you smear people's names just because some kid has a story to tell.

Seems like that school has gone to crap since Sharon Summers took control. It was a top school for a decade. I heard that about 90% of the faculty left or retired since her arrival. If they don't get some new leadership in there soon, its going to be bad news for those folks up in the central office.

Also, if you look at where RHS grads are going to college, (all over the USA), you will be assured that they are quality students produced at the school. Why not work to make your community the best it can be, rather than deride it in this sort of forum?

I see a lot of hate on men and age and coaches. I am an alumni from there and believe it or not this type of thing wasn't uncommon for girls to say at this school. If the coach failed them or gave a well deserved bad grade she would cry wolf and one student has gotten in trouble for that a while back. So all you noble keyboard nights shut up. I can't believe they did this to us! They were my coaches. I know the girl! It pisses me off that they did something this stupid and now has to leave our whole team behind.

I read where another coach was fired for "inappropriate contact" after texting his team "have a good summer and God bless" in a mass text at the end of the school year. Don't be so quick to judge.

How many of you can pontificate with such little knowledge of the facts and evidence is mind boggling. Wait for the facts and evidence to be presented to the grand jury and let's see what happens. But don't forget that a minor cannot consent to an inappropriate relationship with a teacher, coach, preacher, doctor or any other person in a position of trust; hence, the minor is the victim.
