Another church controversy in Senate race?

The Clarion-Ledger reported today that questions arose about a church's involvement in the Senate race:

The super PAC that ran an ad supporting U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran in the Mississippi Link shares a lot in common with New Horizon Church.

Derek Willis of NYT's The Upshot reports that organizational documents filed with the Federal Elections Commission for "All Citizens for Mississippi" lists an address and phone number that belongs to New Horizon Church in Jackson. The PAC's treasurer is listed as Jacqueline Vann, who also serves as chief financial officer for the church.

Rest of article

Sources told JJ that several black businessmen donated money at a fund-raiser in Terry.  They decided to form a PAC and here we are.

I bet they know Pete Perry. . . . .

Tea Party reps will be visiting the church at 2:00 AM to investigate.

This is getting deeper each day. Cochran is showing he will do anything to get reelected. Problem is I view the other fellow as just as sorry.

Then stay home.

Okay fellow Cochran supporters. There's nothing to worry about here. When it's Democrats breaking the tax laws, they get a pass - especially when it's African-American Democrats. It's only those #%$^&*@ TEA folks the IRS ever goes after.

We're safe.

I'm guessing that the church started this PAC before Senator Cochran admitted to violating the commandment in Leviticus 18:23. I wonder if they're now having second thoughts.

Your buddy Perry KF has stepped in it now.

Clarion Ledger reports that DA states that a Hinds County Employee let the three into the courthouse. IT WAS NOT A BREAK-IN.

Next thing you know, Tea Party bloggers will be taking pictures at Sunday services.

What's the Ole Miss v TX Tech score?

Can't believe KF is not covering!

New Horizon Church is backing a Republican? Really? Will they also be backing him in the election against a Democrat?

I hope both sides, including all the out os state people, have learned that this much negative advertising in Mississippi just does not pay off. We don't like it and it makes us stay at home. Too much; way too much.

You'd be surprised how little Pete Perry influences some of this.

I believe this address is the old Sack and Save on Ellis. Does have a church, but also appears to be many other operations out of the building. Does having a PAC there also violate any IRS laws - I don't know, just asking.

Do you all just like Perry so much that you want to make him tied to everything? Quite a fascination!

This is absolutely a non-issue, as someone who practices in federal election law. There is nothing wrong with the officers or employees of a church forming a PAC or Super PAC or whatever you want to call it and advocating for the election or defeat of a candidate. Period. Obviously there could be an issue if corporate assets were used without reimbursement, but there is no evidence that occurred. This is more of the trash that the McDaniel campaign has tossed about.

Anonymous said...

Trash? That is rich coming from a campaign that is trying to recruit across a black community it never paid attention to before. Trying to get Democrats to cross the line for a runoff and courting labor unions. Trash, indeed. A new low in politics.

Thad should have known that pig would squeal on him!!!

New horizon is a non profit so doesn't that mean that they could use their non profit status for getting involve in politics ? This won't be the first time , they were very involve with Tony yarber and even endorse him for mayor . So tell me how is it that they at still listed as a non profit . What happens to separation of church and state ?

"One who practices in federal election law" is either demented or unaware of his responsibilities. He seems to be suggesting that as long as money doesn't change hands, it's entirely proper for electioneering and party politics to go on inside church doors. That is absurd.

Seeking support from those Cochran claims to oppose is a perfect example of why Cochran shouldn't be in the Senate 'representing' Republican constituents.

6/17-334p. Is it the church Socrates Garrett (the big grant recipient developer)attends?

Anonymous said...

,6/17 1054p. no one in this state monitors non profit businesses (or homeowners associations or rural water associations or churches) just charities. you can pretty much do anything you want with the money even invest it. it is a joke. the Secretary of State's office is basically just a database that houses nonprofit businesses' information and that is it. they do not even mandate (only suggest) that annual reports are filed. so there is no Fox watching the henhouses.

7:10; Is this due to white guilt, the fear of action from Jesse, timidity at being called a racist, or just laziness?

601 how would that statement have anything to do with your comment? I was referring to monetary/finances and donations from non profits. Wow ur mind is far out there to read that into my comment.

Hey Pastor, you going to be a pastor or you going to be a "community organizer?" So much for Mission Mississippi and racial reconciliation. If Henderson at Pinelake Church or the new pastor at FBC Jackson made any statements to their congregation-which are mostly white- about the racist Bennie Thompson who actually is a racist - and by the way, you are wrong about McDaniel - the black community would be threatening a riot. And the local media would be pandering to it. And by the way, if you and the other ignorants continue to try to force Nissan into union, Nissan will leave. Now I know that would not affect Jackson much because unemployment is a value there but it would hurt many in Madison and Rankin county.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
