Wading Through Jackson's Water Problems

WLBT concluded it's three-part series on Jackson's water problems last night.  Reporters Anthony Warren and C.J. Lemasters quizzed the efforts to help the water system stay, well, above water in a ten-minute video.  The story is good local journalism that is worthy of your time.  They spent several weeks putting this package together and it shows in the production.  Watch it here.

Horhn: "There's a growing lack of confidence in the city's ability".

One name. Lumumba. Until he's gone, state help will be tightly measured and come with strings attached. Like it or lump it.

And we appreciate the hard work. But as long as WLBT continues their love affair with The Mayor (just watch the end of the morning news) then he really will not feel the heat. Bottom line is that our local media has done nothing to really pressure the admin. and IMO does it for the "dirty laundry". The less they do to help the worse things get....if that makes sense.

Good job by WLBT. Nice reporting.

Lumumba doesn't get it. I like the part where he said they wanted to be treated like any other city. Somebody needs to tell him that other cities don't get all of the government help he is wanting. Other cities run their water/sewer systems like a business and manage it correctly and don't fall into this hole where they need a bailout.

This would have been the ClarionLedger's type of reporting 20 years ago. I'm really glad to see that local journalism is alive in our TV stations and Independent journalists.

Jackson's Soc-cartel of Soc-contractor hustlers can't be trusted to handle money. They and this silly unclothed impetuous boy mayor are just too "entitled", deceitful and greedy.

The State needs to take over Jackson executive governance, its schools, airport, police, utilities, real estate, budget, public works, all of it so that State acts as "Mayor" and consults with City Council.

But would the State shoulder that burden? They will have to eventually so why pretend this radical marxist mayor will ever improve?

Jackson has a water problem?

As long as those we elect continue to " kick the problem to the next administration" thus continuing crisis management, the solutions will be far, far more expensive or a complete do over.

Keep electing those who reward their family, friends and supporters rather instead of meeting the long term needs and educating their constituents about government, there will be more crisis to come.

Those of you sitting in your old towns without a well in your yard will soon discover that delivering safe may actually be a problem in your community as well. You just don't know it yet. The rules are not as stringent and until it hits crisis mode ( which usually comes when a member of the public finds out), it's too late.

Anthony Warren does a great deal of solid reporting on WJTV's website. Most of it doesn't get on-air treatment. Give the station credit for challenging the mayor - nobody does it better or more often than JJ, of course. But at least Warren & LeMaster hold their own to stem the flood of puff pieces about the mayor by Maggie "The Meek" Wade.

Congrats on getting credit where credit is due, KF.

Whatever happened with Horhn's DUI conviction?

Also from the WLBT story, "Meanwhile, efforts to create a regional wastewater authority to better manage the Savanna plant fell on deaf ears.

'It didn't happen because the Rankin County citizens and leadership and South Madison County didn't want to tie up with Jackson,' the [former] public works official said. 'It was money. But also, there was also the fact that Jackson was controlled by Blacks. It's just plain and simple.'"

No. It was mostly the fact that the Jackson leaders and voters, both of which happened to be black, were so mismanaging the city. And it's only gotten worse - they can't even get garbage collected or potholes fixed.

Not true at all. The burb Mayors tried to work with Jackson. Jackson totally blew them off for years despite the millions they paid. Hell, Willie Bell, former PW Director, got up at a city council meeting when Yarber was Mayor and said Rankin was a customer but they didn't have to listen to them and shouldn't do so. Ms. Pittman got up and said Rankin was trying to poison the water for Jackson. I kid you not.

Yes, Willie, they are customers. Just like Amazon is a customer to USPS, FEdex, and UPS. And if they treat Amazon like crap despite the billions it spends with them, Amazon can and will establish its own delivery system.

A meeting was set up with the West Rankin UA Mayors while Yarber was Mayor as a last chance effort to keep them from leaving. Yarber showed up over a half hour late and fumbled some of the basic facts. The Mayors said enough was enough.

The majority of people left in Jackson are free loaders. They are on some type of government assist program. This has been going on so long they think soaking the government is the best thing they can do. They then vote for people who have the same idea. Welfare has become the main source of income for Jackson. Nothing will change until that can be changed. Throwing money at the problem will only make it worse.

Jackson doesn’t want the state to come in to fix anything, they just need someone to place all the blame on. Which will happen on day 2 of the state taking over. Pathetic excuse of a city.

Anonymous said...

@12:15 you are correct. When they have to do something, all they know how to do is put their hand out. That is what Lumumba and the city council is doing. Instead of rolling up their sleeves, getting to work, and fixing it, they are holding out their hand asking for money. They need to quit asking and start doing.

They are freeloaders. They want somebody else to support them and fix their problems for them.

"White flight was already happening but accelerated following the 1979 Easter Flood."

Somebody should send WLBT Kingfish's post earlier this week showing that isn't the only flight happening.

Anonymous said...

Not a penny more than Jackson's per capita share. PERIOD.

Curious why Williams, in the report, uses the '79 flood as his specific benchmark to start the lack of investment clock.

@11:47
I live in ne Jackson and I am white but I’m tired of people claiming race for all problems. Suburban school districts are much more diverse than JPS and also hires diversity he’ll. Madison has a black female superintendent of Madison co schools image of a white was named superintendent at JPS!!! It wouldn’t ever happen
So stop the bs talk of race. You and that idiot check bouncer named otha Cain. Your a pathetic small minded race baiter it seems

FYI, 3:40 there is a world of difference between Madison city schools and Madison county schools.

Anonymous said...

@6:33 you are wrong. There are no "Madison city schools". In Madison County, there are only 2 school districts. One is the Canton Separate School District. The other is the Madison County School District. Ridgeland High School, Madison Central, Germantown, and Velma Jackson are all Madison County Schools. There are no Madison city schools. Such a school does not exist.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
