He should leave things as they are. If we are not overwhelming our hospitals, then continue to open up the economy in pieces. Summertime is a great time to face the virus and build herd immunity as the heat will naturally slow the spread. Also, Sweden and Mississippi are very rural areas, and we can develop herd immunity much quicker by facing it.

I know this younger generation doesn't remember the great AIDS panic of the 1980s, but people were scaired and there was some crazy beliefs being spread. We didn't have the internet to help us figure out what was true and not true. We heard you can get it from shaking hands, eating close to somebody with AIDS, that you "can't tell if somebody has it by looking at them", that it would wipe at a large percentage of the population and that is spreads by kissing. Things we now know are not true.

A big difference between AIDS in the 1980s and Covid 19 of 2020, In the 1980s, AIDS was a death sentence. If you got it, you were going to die. Covid 19, if you get it, there's like a 99% chance you'll survive.

We didn't panic, we went out and did what we needed to do. But today we're burning the world to the ground all in the name of saving lives.

@4:15, I'll preface this by saying I believe the economy needs to be as open as possible, but there are risky activities that should continue to wait for a while longer. I'm not supportive of a complete lockdown but open season on everything is not the answer either. People can shop, eat, and do leisure activities in a way that is still relatively safe from uncontrolled spread of the disease.

Let's put some numbers to your "rip off the bandage" herd immunity proposal. According to the model at https://covid19-projections.com approximately 3% of Americans have been infected. It varies by state with New York obviously at the high end, it lines up well with the known rates in the areas that have done random antibody testing.

It takes a 60% - 75% infection rate to achieve herd immunity, but even then that doesn't mean the disease is eradicated, just that it can no longer spread in an epidemic fashion.

So you are looking at a minimum 20-25 times increase in the number of people infected. COVID has already contributed to 65,000 deaths with more on the way, but we'll use that number for now. You will have 1,300,000 - 1,625,000 deaths without some sort of treatment or prevention. That is the figure that should concern most people. There is no way our medical system can handle tens of millions of hospitalizations and no way society will accept someone standing up and saying potentially almost 2 million deaths are acceptable as you hope to achieve herd immunity over the summer.

The reality is treatments are being tested that are showing demonstrable results. A vaccine is possible in quantities to give to the most at risk by early Fall. If we can keep the curve as flat as possible not only will we not overwhelm our medical system, we can hopefully achieve a significant reduction in mortality.

(1) there is much more to being the chief executive than to figure out if each and every expenditure done by any part of state government complies with federal legislative requirements, even when those legislative rules are stagnant. In this case, the rules are changing daily as is the virus itself. (2) Agency heads are the beginning part of any expenditure, not the Governor, and they don't need daily, or hourly, oversight from the Governor himself, or even his staff. (3) In order to do it from the Governor's office like you suggest, it would take hiring several attorneys and accountants to be able to address the various questions. But those hires would be for a 6 month period; the money all having to be spent by 12/31/20. How in the hell would you hire a staff of professionals for a 6 month gig? You don't. You contract that kind of work out to folks that do it as their regular profession.

But of course, you need something to take a pot shot at your favorite politician, so keep on showing your ignorance with your comments. They make for interesting thought analysis of how some idiot's minds 'work'.

The legislature is sitting on BP funds to spend on economic recovery. They finally got around to negotiating a process to spend the funds and have spent the this session discussing how they don’t like the process and may not spend the funds. The settlement was 2016. Not exactly working at breakneck speeds on economic recovery. When you work three months out of the year it take years. I can’t say that Tate would do a better job bc I know nothing about him but it seems that working more than three months out the year gives and him advantage of opportunity. Also since the money can’t be used to fill budget holes or loss of revenue they would have to consider other things than how they fund or in this case don’t fund agencies.

This morning on Gallo, Hosemann said and repeated that he had been in contact with Michel and Dobbs (among others) regularly, and even as late as last night (Thursday). Hosemann said again today in his press conference the same thing.

Beginning at the 30 minute mark in the press conference first Director Michel says that they have not discussed anything recently with Hosemann, that they had met with him and Gunn 'early on' in this crisis but nothing recently. Dobbs gave a similar response a minute or two later. Both denied having talked with Hosemann about their funding needs or the use of these funds.

But Hosemann, in his eminance's way claims that he has talked with them and got an answer that said there was no need.

Again - my bet is on Hosemann being the liar, liar pants on fire culprit. Basically making that bet because Hosemann always says what he wants to be fact, truth be damned. As someone else noted earlier, he always has an opinion and it is never wrong, at least in his mind.

And there is no benefit for Michel or Dobbs to have responded untruthfully, and if the conversation was last night as Hosemann claimed they would have remembered the conversation.

We simply have not figured out why otherwise healthy individuals die from this yet. And lets say your teenager sails through the illness with only minimal symptoms... but brings it home to grandma or grandpa. Well, the case fatality rate is approaching 20% in those over 80. A vaccine is what is needed to break this. We may have a vaccine in the fall, but then, just for Mississippi to achieve herd immunity, you will have to make and administer 2 million doses. Things have changed for awhile unfortunately. No one in my family is going to go to Disney World, or a football game, or are a packed restaurant until we are vaccinated. I know there are those that disagree with me, but I'm not in the minority in the circles I keep.

In the long run, Gunn will be the ultimate loser in all of this.

Does the legislature plan to spend all of the money before it is required to adjourn on June 30? If they don't, how are they going to spend it before the federal deadline of December 31, 2020? The only way they can spend it after they adjourn but before the 2021 legislative session is if the governor calls a special session. The governor can craft any special session call to include only his own spending proposals. Will the legislature be willing to kiss all the money goodbye because they can't get this way? What a cluster**** this is.

ALL politicians cater to their bases these days. That's the problem. The " bases" are short on accurate information and long on " spin". It's suppose to be the politicians job to inform the bases by gathering accurate information and alternatives, not the other way around.

Now, if one side should accidentally hit on a solution, the other side will oppose it for fear it will give their opponents a " victory". To hell with the bases.

It's not productive to bash the legislature with stereotypes or the character and integrity of Governor Reeves. Show some me decency and respect the office of elected officials as you are instructed by the scripture. Be a citizen and take ownership of democratically elected officials. Also, consider that this is how government should operate (checks and balances) and that while there are urgent needs where funds should be injected into the economy immediately, Governor Reeves and the state economist, as well as major business players in MS should have a voice. The remainder of the funds should be allocated after much deliberation and subject to strict legislative and agency oversight. Trust me I've witnessed this situation numerous times when 4 Star Generals have unfettered discretion to spend funds and it's incredibly wasteful and subordinates are always blamed and often convicted of fraud or lose their careers simply because they executed the intent of the commander.

What is scary is that if the Legislature has control over this money about 50 little Nancy Pelosi clones in the House and Senate will show up with their list of projects that must be included...….or they will tie this up and really hurting Mississippians will not get any relief.

The first three categories do include all ages. So...53 million Americans are at high risk of dying not counting estimates of obesity.
