"They want me to sit on my hands and beg"
Governor Tate Reeves took off the gloves and threw a barrage of punches at the Legislature today at his regular Covid-19 briefing. The press conference is streamed below.
* Large increase in deaths today is because information was obtained from testing conducted earlier.
* Governor said he was going to hold off on further reopenings and think about it over the weekend.
* He said the legislature is voting to strip his office of the ability to use CARES Act funds to help people who need it most. "They want to debate it for weeks and months before we get it out to the people who need it the most," said the Governor. He added "You can not manage an emergency by committee." He said passing the buck on to the legislature would politically be the easiest thing to do.
* State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs said the updated statistics are a "reminder this is far from over." 11 of the deaths reported today were ascertained from death certificates submitted. Over 70,000 have been tested. He said "The risk today is no less than it was three weeks ago." The number of hospitalizations is at its highest level. Some hospitals are seeing their capacity shrinking because they are accepting non-Covid-19 patients.

Shouldn't he know how to spend the money without hiring an outside firm? Isn't that part of the governor's job? Or is he just the head do nothing delegator? Sounds dumb not involving the legislators at no cost to the one time money. At least each district would get a say before they screw it up.
he's going to go full TRUMP
The best part of the stream is the sign language guy.
It's Barbour versus the Legislature. Haley pulled off whatever he wanted before with Katrina, stimulus, and BP money because Phil wasn't smart enough or had the balls to stand up to him. Delbert and Phillip are a different story, and they are up against a minion of Barbour's who pissed off most everyone in the legislature during his reign. Game on!!
He should leave things as they are. If we are not overwhelming our hospitals, then continue to open up the economy in pieces. Summertime is a great time to face the virus and build herd immunity as the heat will naturally slow the spread. Also, Sweden and Mississippi are very rural areas, and we can develop herd immunity much quicker by facing it.
I know this younger generation doesn't remember the great AIDS panic of the 1980s, but people were scaired and there was some crazy beliefs being spread. We didn't have the internet to help us figure out what was true and not true. We heard you can get it from shaking hands, eating close to somebody with AIDS, that you "can't tell if somebody has it by looking at them", that it would wipe at a large percentage of the population and that is spreads by kissing. Things we now know are not true.
A big difference between AIDS in the 1980s and Covid 19 of 2020, In the 1980s, AIDS was a death sentence. If you got it, you were going to die. Covid 19, if you get it, there's like a 99% chance you'll survive.
We didn't panic, we went out and did what we needed to do. But today we're burning the world to the ground all in the name of saving lives.
Looks like we are headed to court.
Interesting that Barbour has been in contact so closely with him at this time to “help guide him.”
Is Phil calling in every day to help?
Some folks about to get RICH on this... should have donated to Taters electoral fund.
Can the Ray Mabus and Ronnie Musgrove gang please shut up. You had your turn and did nothing but screw up Mississippi. Go have another Latte in Fondren.
Tate’s on Hannity tonight. Should be fun to watch. Gunn and Hosemann better get ready to be introduced to the country! Just not the way they want.
I can only think of one qualified consulting firm to handle the Covid-19 money and they have just the right man to do it ...https://www.bryantsongysnell.com/phil-bryant-bio
Can't help but wonder if Tate would have been in favor of Phil spending this money if all of this had happened last year or would Tate have said the legislature is in charge of spending?
What 4:26 said...
How much, if any, extra federal money is MSDH getting as long as we are under an emergency declaration? Does anyone know or has any member of the media asked?
" know this younger generation doesn't remember the great AIDS panic of the 1980s, but people were scaired and there was some crazy beliefs being spread. "
@ 4:15pm.
I remember the 1980's AIDS thing very well.
Honestly, that was never a national crisis.
Sure, the Homosexual community panicked, but no one else did . . . but that's another topic.
I'm not a Tate fan, but I admired his response today.
Delbert didn't surprise me at all, but I think many of us didn't expect him to make a power grab so soon.
Gunn is the most interesting.
He seems to have joined Operation Valkyrie sooner than later.
The biggest question is which side of this Republican 'Civil War' Steve Davenport (over at SuperTalk) will support.
Just some thoughts.
@4:15, I'll preface this by saying I believe the economy needs to be as open as possible, but there are risky activities that should continue to wait for a while longer. I'm not supportive of a complete lockdown but open season on everything is not the answer either. People can shop, eat, and do leisure activities in a way that is still relatively safe from uncontrolled spread of the disease.
Let's put some numbers to your "rip off the bandage" herd immunity proposal. According to the model at https://covid19-projections.com approximately 3% of Americans have been infected. It varies by state with New York obviously at the high end, it lines up well with the known rates in the areas that have done random antibody testing.
It takes a 60% - 75% infection rate to achieve herd immunity, but even then that doesn't mean the disease is eradicated, just that it can no longer spread in an epidemic fashion.
So you are looking at a minimum 20-25 times increase in the number of people infected. COVID has already contributed to 65,000 deaths with more on the way, but we'll use that number for now. You will have 1,300,000 - 1,625,000 deaths without some sort of treatment or prevention. That is the figure that should concern most people. There is no way our medical system can handle tens of millions of hospitalizations and no way society will accept someone standing up and saying potentially almost 2 million deaths are acceptable as you hope to achieve herd immunity over the summer.
The reality is treatments are being tested that are showing demonstrable results. A vaccine is possible in quantities to give to the most at risk by early Fall. If we can keep the curve as flat as possible not only will we not overwhelm our medical system, we can hopefully achieve a significant reduction in mortality.
3:59 - Phil wasn't LG when Katrina hit and the $5 billion was being spent. The player then was Billy McCoy - and he was plenty smart (although he hid it well) when dealing with power plays.
Granted, Amy was LG and she was a team player, not wanting to take over the Governor's mansion like Delbert does.
But Billy - all he wanted to do was maintain the House's position being the power in state government. And he was smart enough to know that the system wouldn't work if it had to be legislated.
@256, hell no. (1) there is much more to being the chief executive than to figure out if each and every expenditure done by any part of state government complies with federal legislative requirements, even when those legislative rules are stagnant. In this case, the rules are changing daily as is the virus itself. (2) Agency heads are the beginning part of any expenditure, not the Governor, and they don't need daily, or hourly, oversight from the Governor himself, or even his staff. (3) In order to do it from the Governor's office like you suggest, it would take hiring several attorneys and accountants to be able to address the various questions. But those hires would be for a 6 month period; the money all having to be spent by 12/31/20. How in the hell would you hire a staff of professionals for a 6 month gig? You don't. You contract that kind of work out to folks that do it as their regular profession.
But of course, you need something to take a pot shot at your favorite politician, so keep on showing your ignorance with your comments. They make for interesting thought analysis of how some idiot's minds 'work'.
I voted for Tate, but Tate is a puppet on a string for Phil!!!!!!
Wrong. Tate despises Phil and thinks he is a hillbilly. Tate will win this one. At least in the opinion of voters. Nobody in their right minds wants that bunch of parasites doling out corona money to small county BS projects.
Is anyone questioning why all of sudden Haley is showing up?? Is it because Butler Snow is getting 5% of the 1.25 Billion dollars for helping distribute the money?? Hmmm! Couldn't be that of course because the Legislature are the bad guys.
Well said,,,Thank You
At 6:23, Phil is not even is part of these recipes.
Uncle Delbert snowed everyone with some of the goofiest ads in Mississippi political history.
My Gawd, Cliff Finch driving a tractor and carrying a lunch box back in the 70's was more impressive than Hoseman sitting on a bench with a campy Grandmother (Hollywood character actress
known for Green Acres/Petticoat Junction type shows).
But Mississippi sheep bought into Hoseman's shit.
He's as smart as Kenny Stokes.
Delbert also knows how to play to his base.
But I would tell everyone, this is only the first quarter of an interesting football game.
Here comes the list of new museums in places nobody goes.
Hell, did they ever decide where to spend the BP money? That disaster was 10 years ago and we are still arguing about the money!
I've come double full circle. Good job Chris McDaniel!
I hear squealing in Jackson tonight because the hog's want all the feed so they can get somebody fat .
For those who don’t follow politics, the Pheeler crew supported and ran Bill Wallers campaign and are now out of the game...now big donors to Gunn and Hozeman. Tater’s boys are doing it their way. Hence, the joisting game.
Tate ran like a tyrant dictator over the legislature for 8 years. Everyone hated him.
Tate thought he would do the same as Governor.
Tate wanted to give the Government money to his supporters, contributors, etc.
Enter Gunn and Delbert.
Tate starts threatening and whining and goes on the arrack.
Two observations: 1) Tate, how does a bit of your own medicine taste? 2) For a bunch of Republicans, y’all are jumping on this free Government money like a fat boy on cake. Is that the new Republican way? What next, Medicaid expansion? Can you spell hypocrite?
Wait no one can really trust Tater. Remember his private road.
Mississippi tax payers gets to watch boy wonder, and old fart and bunch of hissing possum fighting over federal money and be screwed over at the same time. We all know that money will be pocketed. Welcome to Mississippi, and God Bless American.
The legislature is sitting on BP funds to spend on economic recovery. They finally got around to negotiating a process to spend the funds and have spent the this session discussing how they don’t like the process and may not spend the funds. The settlement was 2016. Not exactly working at breakneck speeds on economic recovery. When you work three months out of the year it take years. I can’t say that Tate would do a better job bc I know nothing about him but it seems that working more than three months out the year gives and him advantage of opportunity. Also since the money can’t be used to fill budget holes or loss of revenue they would have to consider other things than how they fund or in this case don’t fund agencies.
4:23 - do you just like to make shit up so that you can take pot shots, or do you just not bother to listen.
Reeves said in todays press conference that he hasn't talked to Barbour in two or three weeks, but yet you claim that "Barbour has been so closely in contact with him...."
Take your choice - are you just dumb and can't understand clear English, or are you just a troll that likes to bitch?
Either --------- LG Hosemann is lying, or Director Michel AND Dr. Dobbs are lying. I'll put my dollar bet on it being Hosemann.
This morning on Gallo, Hosemann said and repeated that he had been in contact with Michel and Dobbs (among others) regularly, and even as late as last night (Thursday). Hosemann said again today in his press conference the same thing.
Beginning at the 30 minute mark in the press conference first Director Michel says that they have not discussed anything recently with Hosemann, that they had met with him and Gunn 'early on' in this crisis but nothing recently. Dobbs gave a similar response a minute or two later. Both denied having talked with Hosemann about their funding needs or the use of these funds.
But Hosemann, in his eminance's way claims that he has talked with them and got an answer that said there was no need.
Again - my bet is on Hosemann being the liar, liar pants on fire culprit. Basically making that bet because Hosemann always says what he wants to be fact, truth be damned. As someone else noted earlier, he always has an opinion and it is never wrong, at least in his mind.
And there is no benefit for Michel or Dobbs to have responded untruthfully, and if the conversation was last night as Hosemann claimed they would have remembered the conversation.
96% chance you survive. Not 99%. Which is still very good odds but if you shoot for a 70% infection rate (to achieve herd immunity), 84,000 Mississippians will be expected to die. We simply have not figured out why otherwise healthy individuals die from this yet. And lets say your teenager sails through the illness with only minimal symptoms... but brings it home to grandma or grandpa. Well, the case fatality rate is approaching 20% in those over 80. A vaccine is what is needed to break this. We may have a vaccine in the fall, but then, just for Mississippi to achieve herd immunity, you will have to make and administer 2 million doses. Things have changed for awhile unfortunately. No one in my family is going to go to Disney World, or a football game, or are a packed restaurant until we are vaccinated. I know there are those that disagree with me, but I'm not in the minority in the circles I keep.
In the long run, Gunn will be the ultimate loser in all of this.
Yesterday, a rep from a statewide radio network asked him a simple question, and he became very nervous.
(He also stated acting squirrelly) .
The oddest thing was that Gunn refused to answer any more questions.
As he had an "import conference call".
Gunn's behavior yesterday was unlike anything many had ever seen.
It's obvious now.
All about POWER with him and Hoseman.
I'm so disappointed with Gunn.
Does the legislature plan to spend all of the money before it is required to adjourn on June 30? If they don't, how are they going to spend it before the federal deadline of December 31, 2020? The only way they can spend it after they adjourn but before the 2021 legislative session is if the governor calls a special session. The governor can craft any special session call to include only his own spending proposals. Will the legislature be willing to kiss all the money goodbye because they can't get this way? What a cluster**** this is.
How many private companies can Tate give the money to?
Check out his list of contributors.
KF is the only one who posted that information.
This is all B S. I’m 66, I’m tired of all the bickering between parties, factions in parties and greedy people in general slopping at the trough. Please, someone, act like the person you promised the voters you would be...a public servant. If this continues it might be time, as H.L. Mencken stated to “hoist the black flag....”
@6:00, @6:19, & @8:58. WRONG!!!!!
@8:58pm I am with you, staying semi isolated has worked for us. Hopefully we can get a little relief during the warmer months.
Come fall and winter we will get a second and third wave.
Yesterday, a rep from a statewide radio network asked him a simple question, and he became very nervous.
What was the question?
I am not a big fan of the Guv. But I trust his judgement much more than I do those leeches called representatives and senators.
@7:48 You make such an eloquent, well reasoned, and compelling argument. You win the internet today, congratulations.
4:15 pm, May 1st
I do remember the AIDS epidemic and the scary rumors then were from the same folks who are unwilling to follow guidelines. This time, the warnings are from scientists, not the screwballs with a podcasts or a website or political hacks.
7:30 pm Delbert Hoseman is not perfect, but to compare him to Cliff Finch is ridiculous. Delbert is not incompetent.
ALL politicians cater to their bases these days. That's the problem. The " bases" are short on accurate information and long on " spin". It's suppose to be the politicians job to inform the bases by gathering accurate information and alternatives, not the other way around.
Now, if one side should accidentally hit on a solution, the other side will oppose it for fear it will give their opponents a " victory". To hell with the bases.
It's not productive to bash the legislature with stereotypes or the character and integrity of Governor Reeves. Show some me decency and respect the office of elected officials as you are instructed by the scripture. Be a citizen and take ownership of democratically elected officials. Also, consider that this is how government should operate (checks and balances) and that while there are urgent needs where funds should be injected into the economy immediately, Governor Reeves and the state economist, as well as major business players in MS should have a voice. The remainder of the funds should be allocated after much deliberation and subject to strict legislative and agency oversight. Trust me I've witnessed this situation numerous times when 4 Star Generals have unfettered discretion to spend funds and it's incredibly wasteful and subordinates are always blamed and often convicted of fraud or lose their careers simply because they executed the intent of the commander.
I am not a big fan of the Guv. But I trust his judgement much more than I do those leeches called representatives and senators.
Agree with this....
What is scary is that if the Legislature has control over this money about 50 little Nancy Pelosi clones in the House and Senate will show up with their list of projects that must be included...….or they will tie this up and really hurting Mississippians will not get any relief.
First day out of "lock down" in Texas. It's been even worse than I imagined. Almost no one wears a mask in stores. People stand close to each other and block the aisles and at the register they breathe down your neck. It's like never anything happened, the ignorance is astounding
The Scripture admonishes me to show respect for elected legislators? Holy Sycamore Tree.
Which one of you went to Oklahoma yesterday?
"In the short time beginning on May 1, 2020, that face coverings have been required for entry into stores/restaurants, store employees have been threatened with physical violence and showered with verbal abuse. In addition, there has been one threat of violence using a firearm. This has occurred in three short hours and in the face of clear medical evidence that face coverings helps contain the spread of COVID-19."
For the clueless:
23 million Americans have been diagnosed with autoimmune diseases
15 million have been diagnosed with lung diseases
15 million have been diagnosed with heart disease
These are very high risk categories for CV19
Also a high risk are those who are obese. You may think you are just a bit overweight, but you'd better do a Body Mass Indicator evaluation.
The first three categories do include all ages. So...53 million Americans are at high risk of dying not counting estimates of obesity.
Now what do you think it'll do to the economy if just the top three categories die?
Clueless and impatient and impulsive folks who cannot tough it out through the methods of controlling an epidemic that we know will work will destroy our Nation.
Uhhhh 10:25.... maybe 2% of the three categories you mention. (You forget the success rate) Quit being a drama queen. That many old folks die during whatever time frame you want to use anyway.
Hate it, but true.
