Dental Chief Wanted, G.E.D.'s Please Apply

Have you ever wanted to work in the medical profession but didn't have those fancy advanced degrees that all those jobs seem to require? Was a periodontist your favorite animal in Jurassic Park?   Have you wanted to actually run something but never ran anything before? Don't worry, the Mississippi Dental Examiner Board has come to your rescue.  All you need is a GED.  Don't believe it? Scroll down to the bottom of the posting.

That's right.  If you only have a high school diploma, you can become the Executive Director of the Mississippi Dental Examiners Board.  No DDS required.  One must understand that while the fuddie duddies at the Medical Board require an M.D. to hold a similar position, the dentists are much more progressive.

Of course, either the Board is very progressive in allowing high school graduates to apply for the position or there is some home-cooking taking place.  The Board fired the long-time Executive Director last month.  The Deputy Director became the Interim Director.  However, she does not possess a college degree.  Home cooking? Such a thing of course, would never happen in this church-going state so we must thank the Board for its progressive views.

Don't believe me? Watch for yourself as the Board lowered the requirement from a DDS to a PhD to a Master's to a Bachelors to a high school diploma or G.E.D.

does seem like the posting was written with a applicant already selected, got to the bothersome interviewing compliance stuff.

This is boilerplate nonsense. Someone dropped the ball on the posting and just stuck in some standard verbiage. There's no way this is accurate.

But, hell! We hired a guy with three years junior financial advisor experience to be State Treasurer, then moved him up the ladder to the second most powerful person in the state, so why not a GED Dental Chief?

As a physician, why would I care who leads this mid-level provider Board?

Kingfish said...

Nope. Watch the discussion. They intentionally included this language.

This Board has been rogue for years—time to investigate

My sentiments exactly brother!

Hell, we're getting ready to promote a former bank teller to Governor! Go figure.

Obviously they are making the job fit a candidate they want but again how many advanced degree candidates that are any good at all would work for $68,000.00. That the State of Mississippi for you and people will gripe who the person isn’t that great of a leader. You most of the time get what you pay for.

Kingfish said...

The Board is stalling on a public records request for a roster of employees and salaries, including the previous director's salary.

You can back off the 'Jackson Comments'. This has zero to do with Jackson. Talkin' 'bout ignorance!

As a Dentist, trained at UMMC just as many MDs, I resent the comments by Madison Doctor. I hold a DDS degree and am a licensed Dr. I am dismayed to learn the Dental board does not require the executive director to hold at a minimum a masters degree. Frankly, we should follow the Medical Board’s lead and require the ED to be a dentist. Doesn’t the MS Bar require for their ED to be an attorney?

As a MS Dentist, this “Board” does not represent me. Theh are bought off by special interests— they are wined and dined and sent on paid vacations by corporate out of state companies. Pathetic!

I would assume that the dentist that owned and operated the fondren dental clinic on north state street would apply as he successfully managed to fool patients into spending absurd amount of money for implants and procedures they never needed. He was a pure con artist and I'm trilled he is shutdown. Dr Arrington is his name.

What is the controversy? If the interim director is competent and "in place," why should she not be allowed to apply? The description is not written so that it can ONLY fit her or any one particular person, i.e., it says "at least" not "no more than" - if someone with a MBA wanted to apply, the verbiage wouldn't prohibit it.

As to all the talk about doctors, the vast majority (like 99.99%) of "doctors" could only qualify via their high school diploma and experience because the vast majority (OK, maybe only 99.98%) of doctors have a Bio/Chem/science-related undergrad degree, not a business or public admin degree. In any case, why would a DDS be particularly helpful for this position? From the description, it appears the job is mainly working on pedantic govt bullshit, not patients (although patience is likely a necessary skill for the job).

If the deputy/interim director has demonstrated the competence to do the job, her education level shouldn't matter and if she isn't competent to direct, she shouldn't be interim director.

@8:50 - No, the MS Bar does not require its ED to be a lawyer. Larry Houchins served as ED for over 32 years, without a legal degree. The ED is more about management than the technicalities of the profession, and the ED of the Dental Examiner's Board should be no less. How many dentists want to spend their time preparing 5-year strategic plans for the legislature? That said - Larry had a BBA in management, not a GED.

Aren’t these board members elected by the governor? The governor needs to talk with the board members who want an executive director with a GED...... politics......

Nothing at all wrong with this job posting. The job is simply an ADMINISTRATIVE position. ADMINISTRATIVE skills can be learned by any person with a basic education and average IQ who is willing to apply himself to the task. I know MANY people who have risen through the ranks to top executive positions and performed in their jobs extremely well withOUT benefit of a college degree. It is WAY past time for employers to stop requiring a college degree for jobs that do not require specialized skills that can ONLY be obtained through specialized training at a specialized school. The average college graduate leaves school with absolutely NO marketable skills so they must be trained ON THE JOB....in exactly the same way that non-graduate would be trained.

The reason is obvious, but spelling it out wouldn't be PC, but that is why this PC bovine scatology persists.

People, this board is completely rogue and full of corruption. How is this legal to change requirements to fit the candidate you want? For many years, this has been a “good ole boy” group ripe with racism, misogyny and just plain hatred. I really hope someone brings them to their knees.
The precious director was corrupt as hell. She just took the fall. Reckon where Stan Ingram stands ?

"Aren’t these board members elected by the governor?"

No, they're not, 10:00 a.m. The governor doesn't 'elect' anybody.

A Bachelor's Degree is the new high school diploma.

@9:20,
The dentist you are referring to is no longer on practice. I can tell you a few horror stories of patients I knew that went to him. Work was crap and prices were absolutely through the roof. He spent money advertising that's all he did.

Let’s get this straight...the ‘administrative’ State of MS job pays 68-90k per their job posting and the board recently acted to dumb down the jor requirements to only require a GED for the advancement of an existing special/favored staffer? And the commenters above see nothing wrong with this? This is the same board that seemingly turned a blind eye to 23 years of questionable behavior of their former ‘adminstrator.’ Didn’t they fire her because of their audit findings from the State Auditors office?

@ 10:17 AM
That's a very broad and negative brush on a college degree. For example, graduates with a STEM education are highly marketable.

Anonymous said...

10:22AM wrote (and is correct): "For example, graduates with a STEM education are highly marketable."

There are limits, however. For example, they could not be the Executive Director of the Dental Examiner's Board in MS. That is actual irony, not what most people think is irony.

As a businessperson, I'd rather have a competent manager with a GED (or hell, even without one) than an incompetent one with more degrees than a thermometer. I realize, however, that effective business management clearly has no role in Mississippi government.

Anonymous said...

They are using the progressive style management model...you dont have to know anything about the subject, you just have to know how to manage the people under you who do....

Anonymous said...

Ridiculous!!!!! You mean to tell me that the board will select a replacement for this position with a person that only has a GED to regulate people with doctorate degrees. This is ludicrous, but really not a laughing matter. Most all dental and medical boards have a doctor in this position. What enlightens our board to think they know more than the rest? Truly, this is very disturbing to think that they could even imagine that this is the proper way to proceed. The board should be ashamed of insulting the Dentist of the state with such a preposterous recommendation. The director of the board in the past has run a very sketchy operation that has been unfair to many people and out of line with common practice and law. This must be stopped!!! It is clear to all that setting the requirement so low is an indication that there is someone that they want as director that is educationally unqualified. If this is allowed to happen in addition to the misdealing of the past director, a full inquiry of the actions of the board presently and the past must be ordered.

Has anyone paid attention to the last sentence in the job description?
Report to the Board, infrequently.
Seriously??

This is a story that the readers can get their teeth into.

Curious as to why you consider the MSBDE a mid level provider board. You have previously posted disparaging remarks about the dental profession in other posts.

Whoever becomes director, GED or PhD, DDS, MD or DO, will not be involved in testing and will not have yes/no power over licenses. From the job description, being a dentist (or possessing any other science doctorate, masters, or even UG degree) will bring nothing to position and from a practical standpoint, the skill set of an administrator and that of a dentist (or MD, DO, etc.) are completely different. On top of which, I would guess that very few dentists would want such a job at the stated salary range. I would think most DDS, MD, DO, etc., since they spent around ten years of their lives and at least a couple of hundred grand becoming a DDS, MD, DO, etc., that is what they want to be, not an administrator.

So, to convince a DDS, MD, etc. to give up "doctoring," something would have to be VERY tempting. Lessee...move to Jackson, MS? Yeah, not likely. Deal with state government, regs and BS, legislators, etc. on a regular basis? Nope. A kiloshiton of money? "Whoa, whoa, did you say a KILOshiton of money? If so, I'm listening..." AHA, we have temptation! We still have the problem of a DDS/MD/DO who is a highly-educated person, but unfortunately, not in right field.

So, to recap, the taxpayers would wind up paying about 5-10 times as much to get someone who has absolutely no education, skills or even a single day's experience in the job they are being hired to do. Does that sound strangely familiar to anyone?

And just to rub the taxpayers' noses into it, for a heck of a lot less, there is apparently someone already there who does have experience and skill to be "interim" director, but some think that person shouldn't be the Director because of reasons that have nothing REALLY to do with whether or not that person can effectively do the job.

Just another government protectionist board that shouldn't even exist. If they want to have a private trade association with a "look for the member sticker to know who you can trust" campaign, fine. But, these things are just taxpayer funded boondoggles.

Just so Madison Doctor will realize that dentistry is not a "mid-level" profession. Dr. Marx is a dentist.

In most colleges, but not all, a four year degree is the new HS diploma.

Of course if a "revisionist history" degree were employable... Oh wait it is, as a teacher.

The truth hurts because it should!

Please PLEASE come record at each MSBDE meeting! You'll have fodder for your website for MONTHS.

The ED does not make decisions regarding disciplinary action. The Board, made up of licensed dentists and appointed by the governor, makes those decisionsz Come on people - if you are going to rant get the facts first. The ED is an administrator and does need to be a dentist to do the job effectively.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
