The Justice Department issued the following statement.
William C. Lamar, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Mississippi, and Christopher Freeze, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Mississippi, announced today that the Sheriff of Tallahatchie County, Mississippi, has been arrested on federal narcotics trafficking and extortion charges.
William Brewer, 58, a resident of Oakland, Mississippi, was charged with conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance, in violation of 21 U.S.C. § 846, and extortion and bribery under color of official right in violation of the Hobbs Act, set forth in 18 U.S.C. § 1951. Brewer was charged by criminal complaint in the Northern District of Mississippi.
If convicted, Brewer faces up to 20 years in prison on each count, along with fines ranging from $250,000.00 to $1,000,000.00 per count. Brewer appeared today before United States Magistrate Judge Roy Percy. He was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending preliminary and detention hearings which are set for August 14, 2018, at 10:00 a.m., in the Federal Courthouse in Oxford, Mississippi.
A criminal complaint is merely a charge and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Trollfest '09
Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.
Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).
Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.
Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".
In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.
In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.
Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.
Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!
This is definitely a Beaver production.

Robbie Bell will perform Her two latest songs: My Best Friends are in the Media and Mama's, Don't Let Your Babies Grow up to be George Bell. Sid Salter of The Clarion-Ledger will host "Pin the Tail on the Trial Lawyer", sponsored by State Farm.
There will be a hugging booth where in exchange for your young son, Frank Melton will give you a loooong hug. Trollfest will have a dunking booth where Muhammed the terrorist will curse you to Allah as you try to hit a target that will drop him into a vat of pig grease. However, in the true spirit of Separate But Equal, Don Imus and someone from NE Jackson will also sit in the dunking booth for an equal amount of time. Tom Head will give a reading for two hours on why he can't figure out who the hell he is. Cliff Cargill will give lessons with his .80 caliber desert eagle, using Frank Melton photos as targets. Tackleberry will be on hand for an autograph session. KIM Waaaaaade will be passing out free titles and deeds to crackhouses formerly owned by The Wood Street Players.

Not sure what a garden variety thug would get for sentencing, but they should double it.
Pretty good argument for ending the War on Drugs and the black markets it creates. Unbelievable, but not surprising.
Drugs and corruption are much worse in rural areas than in the cities.
In Jackson, he'd get probation...or a job on the Labamba administration.
What was he dealing ?
7:37 But he isn't in Jackson, the Hinds county sheriff OR the Labamba Administration doesn't deal drugs or extort people its illegal and hypocritical to their oath which sheriff Brewer didnt abide by. Its a pleasure to sit back and watch people like you blame all the problems, criminal activity and mishaps of people 100's of miles from Jackson on Jackson. By the way I wonder what race sheriff Brewer is?
How about posting the affidavit.
8:49: He's a fat white guy.
Any Sheriff can make 50K a year on the side between Drug Dealers and Bail Bondsman. Not many people notice or care. Like my daddy always said it's the greedy ones who get caught.
Sheriff Brewer appears to be Caucasian.
@8:49 - How about a little critical thinking on your part. The reason folks compare other situations to Jackson is because this is a Jackson based blog and, for the most part, 90% of the threads and posts are in regard to that, for obvious reasons. Check out the blog's name.
And if you actually believe drug dealing and extortion are not going on in Hinds County among public employees, you're living in a parallel universe. But, even if not, there's damned sure enough crap going on in Jackson City Hall, Hinds S.O. and JPD to make up for it forty times over.
8:49 - I said IF, he was in Jackson...and don't be naive, the entire strategy of the Labamba administration relies on white guilt (thanks liberals) accompanied by extortion, discrimination and virtue signaling. Do you honestly think that they don't have relationships and knowledge of who the violent groups/actors are? Without violent crime and racial strife, "transformers" like Labamba have no leverage.
AND, if you're going to play the race card...it shouldn't matter what race he is - justice should be blind, right?
I bet the former Sheriff has a spitoon.
....If the feds knew he had been doing this for 15+ yrs...why did it
take the feds so long to just now bust his a$$...??
No different than a Jackson or Memphis suburb making money on trumped up fines on specious charges.
Tallahatchie County is a sad place, full of addiction, poverty and people with little hope of improving their lives. Maybe getting this long term drug dealer off the streets will help the situation.
"Not sure what a garden variety thug would get for sentencing"
No garden variety thug (or garden variety anything) would be charged under this section of US Code - it involves "color of law," i.e., officials - and moreover, Hobbs Act charges are easier to prove than "regular" bribery charges. Unless some horrible mistake has been made, which is unlikely, his goose is cooked. Innocent until proven guilty, certainly, but these aren't the kind of charges that get filed on "well, we're pretty sure..." Apparently, several criminal defense folks hang around here, so I'm sure one or more will be along shortly to explain it more fully.
8:49 must be new in town. They may not know about the gig Jackson police department had a while back. They provided police escort for drug shipments including uniformed officers and police cars.
Boss hog done got caught. He will be squealing like a suckling pig before long. Standing by for superseding indictments.
Why does the Tallahatchie County Sheriff live in Yalobusha County?
It will be a short drive to Parchman if he is convicted. Boy, I bet some of the inmates can't wait to see his a$$ when he checks in.
Why are there no white leaders condemning the actions of this man? It's clearly a cultural issue when you have all these whites abusing their privilege left and right and knowing they don't have to play by the same rules as everyone else.
7:32....I like the term 'virtue selling'. Please tell me what it means. Thanks in advance.
1:05
Speaking as a white leader, I must say that you are exactly correct!
As i was telling Lamar ... and the pharmacy peeps down in the Hub City just the other day ... "y'all all good ... don't sweat it"
Apologies for going off-topic, but I simply can't help myself: Did you know that Tallahatchie County has two school districts? Fewer than 16,000 residents in the county and six schools -- two school districts. Geez.
Two supers making $85K and $90K and a host of administrators in each district making over $60K each. I believe that the average teacher salary in the state is in the low-$30Ks.
2:35, true, off subject. And point is well made. But your ending fact is well off base. Average teacher salary in MS is much higher than low $30k's.
Starting teacher salary in MS is in the low $30k. Average teacher salary - across state - is $45k.
@1:05 Why does this have to be a race issue? Dirty is dirty no matter what race you are. I don’t recall any black elected officials being called out by other black leaders when they have been caught using their power to benefit themselves and abuse others? I’m white and I agree that if this sheriff is found guilty he needs to serve the rest of his days in a jail cell. Does it really matter that my opinion is from a white person? SMH
5:13 pm I agree, but the reality is that when a black face is the culprit or seen in the mugshot ( none with this post, so thanks KF), it's an opportunity for those commenting to reinforce prejudices and make false comparisons.
It'd be great if we all judged the behavior and expected our race or social group to get the same consequences for bad behaviors. It be great if comparisons that are made were "apples to apples and oranges to oranges" instead of " fruit".
But, the fact is that those who benefitted from Jim Crow and the offspring they raised are resent the loss of advantage . The least successful of both races can blame an easy target for their lack of personal success. Those who are successful can bemoan the loss of cheap labor as well loss of personal wealth, superiority and the control that come with cheap labor.
The politicians of both races can not only use that to their advantage but feel they must. It's no different than after the Civil War when Southerners blamed Yankees which is what led to Jim Crow.
Slavery lasted centuries and we aren't even a century away from Jim Crow.
The risk is that will end up like the Jews and Arabs that use history from 1000s of years ago to justify their actions today.
The truth is that humans are seldom able to eradicate even the really bad behaviors. We know there is still the occasional cannibal or human sacrifice that we dismiss as insanity these days. The bad news is we create more new nouns, new rationalizations , tribal wars aren't limited by geography and we can now wipe our entire species along will all others off the map.
We tend to miss the big picture or place events in long enough context.
So we keep making the same mistakes over and over with the same results.
Just for jollies, how is it that killing someone one or masses of people is murder but deliberately putting a product on the market you know with certainly will kill people and the motivation is profit ( which can be motivation in other murder as well ), isn't ?
Since this Sheriff knows that drug overdoes that will result in death are a certainty, why isn't he a murderer and charged with the deaths of all those who died from the drugs he sold?
There's nothing new about it. The only thing new is the product...drugs. It has traditionally been alcohol. Mississippi sheriffs traditionally supplemented their salary with bootlegging money. That went on for years, and nowhere more than Hinds and Rankin Counties. Those guys never did a day in jail because they were the "good ole boys" and corruption was a secondary issue. Primary was maintaining the "Southern way of Life". Now that integration has won out, we can concentrate on those good ole boys who go too far. This guy is a token. More to come.
The guy who stole the $30k in Belhaven won't have to sell any weed for awhile.
Call me naive, but I really doubt this sort of activity is widespread among law enforcement, or even duplicated to this degree in any other county. Well, two others at most.
8/11 @ 1:05 You do realize that this is a federal indictment, correct? The Parchman folks will just have to do with someone else's a$$.
In answer to an earlier question, they waited this long because they were making sure they had a solid case against him and all the others involved.
