Mississippi Department of Corrections Commissioner Pelicia Hall issued the following statement.
Mississippi Department of Corrections Commissioner Pelicia E. Hall is
requesting the assistance of two outside agencies in investigating
inmate deaths this month.
"I have been communicating with the FBI and the Mississippi Department
of Public Safety regarding our deaths," Commissioner Hall said today.
"While we believe that most of the reported deaths during the month of
August are from illnesses or natural causes, such as cancer and heart
disease, based on available information, we are seeking assistance from
others outside the department in the interest of transparency. My
administration is committed to ensuring that all individuals in the
department's care receive appropriate medical care."

Trollfest '09
Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.
Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).
Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.
Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".
In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.
In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.
Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.
Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!
This is definitely a Beaver production.

Jackson Jambalaya is the home of Trollfest '07. Catch this great event which promises to leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Robbie Bell will perform Her two latest songs: My Best Friends are in the Media and Mama's, Don't Let Your Babies Grow up to be George Bell. Sid Salter of The Clarion-Ledger will host "Pin the Tail on the Trial Lawyer", sponsored by State Farm.
There will be a hugging booth where in exchange for your young son, Frank Melton will give you a loooong hug. Trollfest will have a dunking booth where Muhammed the terrorist will curse you to Allah as you try to hit a target that will drop him into a vat of pig grease. However, in the true spirit of Separate But Equal, Don Imus and someone from NE Jackson will also sit in the dunking booth for an equal amount of time. Tom Head will give a reading for two hours on why he can't figure out who the hell he is. Cliff Cargill will give lessons with his .80 caliber desert eagle, using Frank Melton photos as targets. Tackleberry will be on hand for an autograph session. KIM Waaaaaade will be passing out free titles and deeds to crackhouses formerly owned by The Wood Street Players.

Average American mortality rate is 844 per 100,000 population.
MS prison population is 19,500 persons on average.
That equals an average mortality rate of 13.7 persons per month. 15 persons dying in one month is just about national average!
This is SIMPLE MATH. This is a non story and media sensationalism at its finest.
Why should we expect people who by and large make poor lifestyle decisions to have a below average mortality rate? Furthermore who cares?
http://www.mdoc.ms.gov/Admin-Finance/Pages/Daily-Inmate-Population.aspx
https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/deaths.htm
It would be statistically impossible to have that many deaths in one month. The heat has not been as bad this year as last.
"While we believe that most of the reported deaths during the month of August..." Most? Dayum...how many were there?
5:51, thanks. I thought this sounded like sensationalism, but did not have information to back it up. If they reported how many people died in any hospital in town, people would be screaming for an investigation of the hospital.
Hopefully they will also publish how much we taxpayers have spent on everything for these criminals that were nothing but a drain on society.
556, does your reading comprejection stop in mid sentence? They know how many deaths there were -,they reported the number. They believe that most of those - the reported number - were caused by x, y, or z. But, they are wanting autopsy verification. Get it know? Or, do we need to break the sentence down into its various components for you?
@5:51
Applying the US mortality rate may be "simple math," but it's wrong You'd need to have more detailed information about the average age of the prison population.
For instance, the average mortality rate of ages 25-44 is closer to 150 per 100,000.
Why hasn't anybody called for the Commissioner's resignation? She is in over her head over there. That place is in total disarray.
So now folks think that Commissioner Hall is GOD.
Our society can't be that stupid. How can she control
death. Have we heard victims of who have been raped or
family members who children, mothers or fathers have been
brutally murdered?
@ 9:40 PM
Try harder:
The 15 inmates who have died this month range in age from 24 to 78.
https://www.wapt.com/article/15th-inmate-dies-this-month-in-mdoc-custody/22889181
The 12th inmate, Troy Pittman, 59, died at Promise Hospital in Vicksburg Monday morning. He was serving a 30-year-sentence at Central Mississippi Correctional Facility.
(59, at a hospital at time of death)
https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.clarionledger.com/amp/1143342002
Tony Springer, the 13th inmate, died Monday evening at Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula. Springer, 75, was an inmate at the South Mississippi Correctional Institution in Leakesville.
(75, past average male age of death statistically)
https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.clarionledger.com/amp/1143342002
Two other inmates at Parchman were found dead in their cells within hours of each in April. Michael Montrell Norwood, 29, and Milton Craig, 28, were found unresponsive in their single cells in separate buildings at Unit 29 on April 2 of "apparent suicides."
(Suicides, but I’m sure you think those are coverups? Ya know, “the man”)
https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.clarionledger.com/amp/1143342002
Aug. 2: Albert McGee, 57, South Mississippi Correctional Institution in Leakesville
Aug. 4: Charles R. McCullough, 66, State Penitentiary at Parchman
Aug. 5: Jack Glisson, 70, South Mississippi Correctional Institution
Aug. 11: Ricky Martin, 58, Central Mississippi Correctional Facility
Aug. 19: James Myrick, 63, State Penitentiary
Aug 20: John Luttrell, 67, Central Mississippi Correctional Facility
Aug. 27: Troy Pittman, 59, Central Mississippi Correctional Facility
Aug. 27: Tony Springer Sr., 75, South Mississippi Correctional Institution
Aug. 28: Curtis Hughes, 45, State Penitentiary
So there’s at least 8 of them past age 57, one 45 y.o. plus 2 “alleged” suicides. Not exactly the 25-44 year old window you referenced. Took about 5 minutes to look it up. Bring facts to the table if you want to discuss this with adults.
Commissioner Hall can't control death!
Has anyone heard from any victims who has
experienced rape or family members brutally
killed?
>>>Applying the US mortality rate may be "simple math," but it's wrong You'd need to have more detailed information about the average age of the prison population.<<<
The next step beyond "simple math" is understanding that one needs to make additional corrections as prison inmates aren't expected to be killed in significant numbers in automobile and motorcycle collisions. Arguably in a well run prison system homicides ought not to happen in significant numbers, nor should drug overdose deaths or poisonings.
http://www.worldlifeexpectancy.com/mississippi-cause-of-death-by-age-and-gender
Drugs are bad...mkay~mr Mackey
How rich! A serial killer, in prison, killing other criminals! Sleep well (with one eye open)
This isn't normal for MDOC hence the concern. It is spread over the system and that makes me feel a little better but then again in the back of my mind it makes you wonder about institutional control by knowing how the place is run.
Think of how much money we are saving, this looks like a good thing to me.
Lies, damn lies, and statistics. Bad people do bad things to others and themselves -- that's why prisons are chocked full of them. As they are in Mississippi. The new MDOC commish seems to be a making a good effort to take the reins from the absolutely incompetent and corrupt past leadership. But it's a shit sandwich and just about a no-win scenario for her (or any new commissioner for that matter).
I think she's done the right thing -- let outsiders look in, independently evaluate, and report what's going on. But don't believe for a second that the majority of these prisoners are "really good people who just need a little help getting straight...". They deserve humane treatment and a chance to rehab themselves but they are not, for the most part, "good people".
@11:24 PM
“The next step beyond "simple math" is understanding that one needs to make additional corrections as prison inmates aren't expected to be killed in significant numbers in automobile and motorcycle collisions. First of all we have already dispelled your nonsensical argument that the people dying are in a narrow younger age window. The earlier post definitely says that’s simply not true. You cherry picked the 35-44 year old window, which is great if you want to build a false narrative that that’s the type of person who is dying in custody. But factually (read the earlier post), it’s not even close to statistically true and disingenuous.
In the overall age category, using YOUR statistical resource, the top ten leading causes of death are: heart disease, Alzheimer’s, lung disease, stroke, lung cancers, hypertension, diabetes, breast cancer, kidney disease, flu/pneumonia.
http://www.worldlifeexpectancy.com/mississippi-cause-of-death-by-age-and-gender
I’m not sure if you have been around the incarcerated population. I have been for the last decade plus in a professional capacity. Additionally I have a formal education in sociology and statistics. I consider myself qualified to debate this. These are, by and large, not people who make good life decisions, and certainly not with long term health and wellness in mind. It’s not shocking that incarcerated persons would have a mortality rate in line with the average American. In all honesty I would expect it be much higher when factoring in the higher propensity of poor health decisions and narcotics abuse. It’s cute and telling that you think narcotics shouldn’t be in prison. I would agree, but I also don’t live on a unicorn farm.
It’s really hard to get very worked up about this. They must have done bad stuff to land in jail, and society on the outside was doing just fine without them, so ho hum if there are a few fewer to feed and house. And I’d imagine that, for them, death would be preferable to a miserable life in jail, anyway.
The genius in the opening post fails to realize that the prison population contains nobody under the age of 18 and a non-parallel number over the age of 70. Deaths of people in those two age groups alone are enough to blow his theory out of the water.
@ 2:57 PM
What’s your theory then genius? MDOC is maliciously cloak and dagger killing innocent inmates? Did Russia collude to get them incarcerated as well? Please expound with your statistical fact based analysis of what you believe is happening... chances are it hurt your feeeeelings so rather than bring anything constructive to the table you responded with nonsense. What is your honest fact based analysis? Until you present that you’re just wasting oxygen.
@2:57 PM
You’re presented with facts, offer none in return, but expect to be taken seriously.
I figured the pen would be the safest place most of these bad boys and girls ever had.
A prison sentence is not supposed to be a death sentence.
11:06, Actually, sometimes, it is
7:24, who is also 7:27, is off in the ditch twisted around his own axle. The opening post, which he penned, is nonsense. He now knows it. There is zero correlation between the anticipated or factual number of deaths among a prison population and those experienced in the general population of a state or nation.
He might as well give us his opinion of the comparison of drowning victims in the city sewer system of New York and the number found to have drowned in bath tubs in Queens.
Why was an inmate from Central Ms Correctional taken to fleabag Promise in Vicksburg when CMMC, UMC, St.Doms, Baptist, River Oaks (if he was squeezing out a baby) were 15 minutes away?
@4:34
Typical liberal nonsense: facts don’t matter, only your feelings matter.
Thanks for clarifying yourself.
There are 47 inmates on death row waiting to die.
Are we mad at the judges who sentenced them to die?
The attacks on the prison system is promoting and condoning criminal behavior!
Those who participate in these attacks should share the punishment that is issued to
those offenders.
Why don't those prison strikers support ridding the prison system of contraband and drugs?
They never talk about the deaths of other inmates that have been carried out by the
hands of career criminals that they support or the drugs trafficking into the prison
that most of them are part of!!
They only support the alleged injustice on the streets and behind the wall! All smoke to hide the
real agenda which is money making, killing and getting high!
