Virgi provides more info on water problems.

Jackson Ward 7 Councilwoman Virgi Lindsay posted this message about Jackson's water problem on Facebook Wednesday:


City of Jackson began experiencing near-record cold temperatures on Sunday evening following the arrival of an Arctic cold front.

As a result, the water treatment system, the water elevated storage tanks, and the water distribution system are experiencing challenges in meeting customer demand and some areas are experiencing low water pressure. The Director of Public Works has declared an emergency in order to bring in contractor crews to supplement the City workforce. We anticipate that this emergency may continue through the remainder of this week.

Treatment. The O.B. Curtis Water Treatment Plant uses membrane technology to filter the water before pumping it to customers. Those membranes were not designed to operate for long periods of time while exposed to these cold temperatures. As a result, our treatment capacity was diminished at times during the past twenty-four to thirty-six hours. Five of the six membrane elements are in service and the sixth element is expected to return to operational status later this evening.

Elevated Storage. Six of the elevated storage tanks have been drained by a combination of water main breaks and customer demand. The treatment plants are operating at full capacity in an effort to meet the demand and refill the storage tanks.

Distribution. We know of thirteen water main breaks on distribution lines twelve inches and smaller. Our maintenance crews are working twelve-hour shifts to make the necessary repairs. We intend to bring in two additional contractor crews to supplement the City workforce to accomplish these repairs.

Aged pipes are restricted by mineral buildup which also effects pressure. Replacing one's service line would make for better pressure in one's own home.

Glad to see she is using words such as "membrane technology" and so forth. Quite a leap from organizing cookouts in Belhaven!

A lot of words wasted in that press release.

Virginia didn't offer more info - she copied and pasted press release of the PW department. What she knows about 'membrane technology' probably would fit better with her medicine chest, not City utility system.

And you wonder why people don't want to go into public service. A city councilwoman tries to put out important information in a timely manner and for her troubles, you clowns just sit up at the wall and shoot spitballs at her. Heaven forbid she should try to inform the citizens if she is not a damn expert. Of course, you say nothing about the other city council members who didn't even try to keep their voters informed.

The well written statement came from the new Public Works Director who seems
to be an experienced and knowledgeable manager. Kudos to the mayor for surrounding
himself with mostly top flight administrators. Quite a change from the corruptive Yarber
Gang.

Virgi is reporting information to her constituents, like all elected officials should do. She has a journalism degree. I don't see where she is claiming to be a membrane expert.

The people complaining about Virgi's statement and her "not knowing what she's talking about" are only saying that because she is from Jackson. If this statement would have come from one of the redneck hicks on the city council from one of the surrounding towns, these same people would be screaming about how great of a public servant the person was for informing their citizens.

NO, 12:06. THE EXACT OPPOSITE. If it were written by a black person and it was said that it was well-written, it would be considered racist, as it is when someone said that Pres. Obama was articulate. Think about it.

I am the one that said it is a well written statement. I have no idea if Virgi is red, yellow, black or white. I don't know if Virgi is male or female. I wouldn't know Virgi if Virgi was standing right in front of me. And I am equally clueless as to who the new director is. I made the comment for the simple reason that too much of what I have read from public officials from Jackson wouldn't pass a 3rd grade English test! And before you take the opportunity to bash me for not knowing who Virgi is (or the Director), keep in mind that I don't live in Hinds county. I'm simply a person that reads the posts on Jackson Jambalaya.

Thanks, Kingfish. And thanks to Virgi, who is plenty tough, and as smart as she is tough. She did wonders for our neighborhood here in Belhaven, and the city will benefit from her involvement as well. She is very white, and has curly blond hair, but those features do not seem to matter much when the idea is to bring energy and love of place to bear on the tasks at hand.

As to the "if she was black" troll above, I and others here have had plenty of praise for Mel, Jr., who has also gone out of his way to inform his constituents through Facebook. We have some fine talent on the Council.

KF, my comment was not meant against Virgi in any way. But it was a complement to the new PW Director, who in my opinion has handled this 'emergency' in a very professional manner and as well as could be done in the situation.

It was a complement to his notice issued to the public. The fact that Virgi copied and pasted it on her FB account was probably a good thing - although since I am not a FB friend of hers, I was not made aware by my Councilperson. Maybe if she wants to use social media, someone could suggest other outlets - Nextdoor, BIA newsletter (which she should be aware of), emails to her campaign email list?

Not condemning her, or complaining about her service. But also, unlike your headline, am not commending her for anything other than what would at least help support the salary she receives along with that of her assistant (who probably did the actual posting - and there is nothing wrong with that either before you think I'm throwing stones again.)

Fact is - I would rather she use more methods than just her social media account to be a communication method to her constitutents. But I also recognize that it is more than her predecessor did and I appreciate that she at least is attempting in a small manner to provide the information.

The PW Department has provided regular updates of the situation to both the Council and to the media; all while attempting to deal with the numerous problems throughout the city.

Really it doesn't matter if she is black or white, if it was well written and thought out.
What matters is there is more water running down the streets in Jackson than there is going to homes. Posting about the problems is not doing a damn bit of good. People need to get off their ass and do something about it.
That is the problem with Jackson. Too many chiefs and not enough Indians.

I simply have a comment. Back in the day and this may be before you lived here Kingfish, in the days of Mayor Dale Danks I can report that when anything weather related was going on, the man was "large and in charge". He would hold press conferences on the news hour (usually @ 7:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.) and let the entire City know what was going on, what was being done and what the outlook was. Standing by him would be whatever City officials who knew the "ins and outs" and could answer detailed questions posed by the press. In any kind of weather emergency, Mr. Danks took charge and his administration were all hands on deck.

Now I'm sure there are going to be lots of follow-up comments about Mr. Danks (good and bad) but this is one area where he as a Mayor excelled. Haven't seen anything like it since him.

Large and in charge doesn't fix broken water lines. Hiring extra crews does. Talking about what is happening on the news was how information got out 'back in the day'. Now, social media gets it out immediately, and doesn't require those working on the problem to go to the tv stations, or stand around while the three majors come to them.

Frankly, in this case, I think the new PW Director is doing a good job of keeping everybody informed. And, BTW, even though I am of the age when I remember the local news times, its been years since I turned on my TV to find out what's going on with busted water pipes - or much of anything else.

3:06 - if you really think there is more water running down the streets than into houses, you obviously have absolutely no idea what is involved with the hundreds of miles of water lines within the city. Fifty five breaks, with half repaired does cause a loss of water, but not nearly what is being consumed in just one or two of the largest subdivisions of the city. Hell, I'm happy that they are getting them repaired as fast as they are breaking, that's a hell of an improvement over the last few years, and I know that they are getting repaired because I read the press releases from those doing the repairing. Not watching the elected folks pimp before the cameras. -- Now, if it was a situation where I personally needed to take action (tornado, hurricane, etc.) I would look forward to seeing my Mayor on the tube or elsewhere giving us information that would be instructful. But in the case of a loss of water, all that I can do about it is wait until it is fixed.

She is doing her job as she intends. So, maybe she didn’t know about membrane technology before she wrote it. The attorneys I hired never knew a thing about my type of business until I explained it to them.....and even during deposition they STILL couldn’t understand. Give this lady a hand. I bet she knows more than you think. And guess what. Most of you don’t know about membrane technology. Hell I know o don’t.

Virgi Lindsay is a rare blessing. A lovely, intelligent, cultured private citizen, who is doing a thankless public job.. She could have easily joined the ranks of braying complainers, like most here on this blog. Instead, she willingly put herself in the trenches, working for a city she loves. That, my friends, is selflessness of the highest order. I am not made of such stuff. There is no amount of money that could persuade me to go within fifty yards of a City Council meeting, with all the Sturm, Drang, and sheer numbskullery that goes on there. Hurray for Virgi. I just hope she does not burn out before she can do some good for us all, here in her ward.

I was at a conference a few years ago and I had a long talk with the Chair of the Economics Department at Emory University. We discussed the US infrastructure problems and how in 2009 it was estimated that it would cost $1 trillion to fix. Obama directed the spending of $1 trillion for the "economic stimulus." Instead of doing the right thing and seriously addressing our infrastructure issues, our President pissed off about 2/3s of the money.

So even a liberal economics professor to admitted this baffoonery from Obama. Don't blame Virgi, Stokes, or Thad Cochran. Blame Barak Obama.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.


In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear.
