Update (1/28/18): Deceased is Crystaline Barnes. She was indicted in 2014 for burglary but the case was remanded to inactive docket in 2016.
JPD issued the following statement.
It occurred shortly after 7:30am as an Officer was conducting the stop of a vehicle for a traffic violation after receiving reports that the vehicle had forced another motorist off the roadway.
After stopping the suspect vehicle and requesting an additional unit for assistance, the vehicle pulls away. The suspect vehicle u-turns to evade the responding unit. It later stops and began driving in reverse toward that Officer who had exited the patrol vehicle just prior. The Officer then discharged their weapon into the vehicle before safely jumping out of its path and the suspect vehicle collided with the patrol vehicle.
The suspect vehicle drove forward again towards the initial Officer who also discharged their weapon into the vehicle. The suspect vehicle subsequently collided with a nearby utility pole just off the roadway.
The identity of the driver has not yet been determined, but is a black female, possibly in her early to mid twenties. Further investigation determined that the driver was fatality wounded during the incident.
It remains unclear what lead to the driver’s actions. Investigators are actively working to gathering additional information.
As a part of standard procedure, both Officers will be placed on administrative leave with pay. Two separate investigations, both an internal and a criminal, will take place in order to determine whether any department polices or any laws have been violated.

Yeaaaaa, give the office a pay raise and a Distinguished Marksmanship badge and put him back to work.,
4:01, agreed TOTALLY. If YOU don't want to get injured / killed by the police, don't try to injure / kill the POLICE. Seems pretty simple to understand on the front-end, but that's just me.......
So sad. Are we at a point where nationwide training must be mandated so that the public will understand the police will shoot you if you try to kill them.
A part of society seems to have forgotten that.
Could this be handled through a tearful TV spot by Sally Struthers?
Comply or die.
If the vehicle was evading the officer and did a 'u-turn' and then went in reverse toward the officer, that's impossible.
@5:24
Read the story again. There were 2 officers, one in each direction, so it is possible.
When keeping it real....goes wromg
Once again, Obama is gone. His war on law enforcement will no longer be tolerated. Try to kill or injure a police officer and you will suffer the consequences. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes!
Just the latest case of a life lost due to failure to prosecute and imprison criminals. Had Ms. Barnes been serving time for the 2014 burglary, she might still be alive today. Thank goodness the two police officers were able to avoid being killed or injured.
Who knows why it wasn't prosecuted. May not have had a real case. I can't find an indictment on the partner mentioned in the indictment.
Stay Woke, Jacktown!
If I was armed as a innocent bystander and someone tried to run me over with a car. I would sling lead at them too!
That’s not even taking into consideration this person was non compliant with a law officer.
Just cuz you don’t like the P.O. P.O. don’t mean you can disregard the instruction.
There is often so much more to a story than a headline. It is reported that there is a long history of mental illness in this young woman’s family.
Thank you JPD!!
Why don't you just come out & say it. All criminals have mental problems. Police have a tough job with the war on Police started by Clinton, Obama & Kenneth Stokes. Just saying.
Just another thug that had to be taken off the streets the hard way.
The courts can protect the thugs but every once in a while one will have to face the people.
Does NOT take 30 rounds to stop a vehicle!! Why no video? Lots of
unanswered questions here.
