The city of Jackson issued the following press release.
Cold Weather Measures and Water Conservation Tips
Jackson, MS – The City of Jackson began experiencing near-record low temperatures on Sunday evening following the arrival of an Arctic cold front. As a result, the water treatment system, the water elevated storage tanks, and the water distribution system are experiencing challenges in meeting customer demand. Some areas are also experiencing low water pressure due to several water main breaks throughout the city.
The Director of Public Works has declared an emergency in order to bring in contractor crews to supplement the City workforce. We anticipate that this emergency may continue through the remainder of this week.
In an attempt to conserve water, we are asking the citizens of Jackson, Mississippi to use the following tips to help do your part in conserving water:
• Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth. Water comes out of the average household faucet at 2.5 gallons per minute. Don’t let all that water go down the drain while you brush! Turn off the faucet after you wet your brush, and leave it off until it’s time to rinse.
• Turn off the tap while washing your hands. Do you need the water to run while you’re scrubbing your hands? Save a few gallons of water and turn the faucet off after you wet your hands until you need to rinse.
• Hand-washing a lot of dishes? Fill up your sink with water, instead of letting it run the whole time that you’re scrubbing.
• Cut your showers short. Older shower heads can use as much as 5 gallons of water per minute. Speed things up in the shower for some serious water savings.
• Don’t run the dishwasher or washing machine until it’s full. Those half-loads add up to gallons and gallons of water wasted.
• Wash clothes in moderation.
• Fill up water containers, bathtub, etc.
• Purchase extra drinking water.
The City of Jackson will continue keep you informed during this weather event.

It’s like I live in a MASH unit
If we an all agree here in Jacksun to forego showers for this whole week, we can cut down on the expense of visitors from the entire surrounding metro area! We’ll have I55 all to ourselves for a change too!
We shouldn't shower at all this week and then go hangout at Rainbow or Cups in fondue with the other hipsters.
Most of these are common sense rules of conservation, but if they want people to save water why are they telling them to fill bathtubs? An average tub holds 80 to 100 gallons. That makes no sense.
With as many layers as we're wearing this week, nobody will ever suspect.
If you're on a laptop or phone, having to click off on street signs, cars or storefronts twenty times is quite a chore. Is it the blog's intention to restrict posts and lessen interest by creating frustration with the process?
On a water-related note....the City's website for paying your bill has been offline the past two days. Hope they haven't lost their host. That website worked pretty well last year and maybe this is only a temporary glitch.

I complained too about the pictures
It’s not his program but rather a third party’s...google I think
He has no control over it I think
It's all Google. I have no control over it whatsoever.
I thought the City of Jackson was always in an emergency. As long as the rent gets paid on my properties in northeast Jackson, I don't really care. Enjoy living in your third world country!
One question.
Why does Jackson have water problems when it turns cold?
It is just as cold at my house and my water lines do not freeze.

The only ever reasonable response I've heard to an inquiry such as yours is, Jackson's infrastructure, pipes, etc., are way older than most cities in this state. It stands to reason there'd be more problems and with these types of issues, but from what I'm told, these underground water pipes aren't dug up until "something" happens. There's just so many.
Jackson is not the only city experiencing very cold weather related water line problems. When the larger diameter pipes experience very cold water running through the pipes there is shrinkage to the pipe and to the joints. Weak points could have problems from this major temperature change. Most houses have a 3/4" service line and small diameter pipes do not experience as much change with temperature variations. Your home is heated and has less chance of damage. The city has pipes ranging in sizes up to 48" and 54".
Its the size of the pipes in Jackson. Small diameter pipes do not experience as much change in cold weather as larger diameter pipes. Cold weather causes changes in the pipes that can make weak areas break or leak. Check out other cities; particularly up the east coast right now. Small diameter pipes do not experience as much change as large diameter. Jackson has water pipes up to 54" in diameter and yes, some of our older pipes, particularly the concrete ones (which should never have been used) have many more weak areas than the newer ones.
Amusing to watch the Lumumba administration act as if all of these problems couldn't have been anticipated. We went through this all before to same effect. Lumumba's crew was caught flat-footed and out of the loop.
6:12, far be it for me to take up for Jr's administration - which has yet failed to prove to be competent. But just what would you have had them do in advance of this weather. Start repairing the breaks before they occurred? Maybe you should sign on to be a consultant and let them know which lines were going to break so they could have known where to start.
Yes, they knew that there would probably be breaks, I'm sure. And as far as I know they stocked up on supplies potentially needed. If they are going to have crews working 12 hour shifts, lots of replacement pipe joints would be needed. But you can't declare an emergency ahead of the emergency; you can figure out who you can hire once the emergency is declared but you can't hire them and put them to work. UNTIL there are actually breaks wherever in the hundreds of miles of waterlines they actually occur.
Start repairing the breaks before they occurred?
So you're saying there were no breaks in-progress in the hours immediately before the temp plummeted? Somehow I doubt you're that naïve. Apologia plays better over in Laddville.
