It appears defendants were paying bribes to Hinds County prosecutors to reduce bonds. The U.S. Attorney filed a bill of information in U.S. District Court Friday that alleged Hinds County Assistant District Attorney Ivon Johnson and an unnamed co-conspirator fixed bonds for criminal defendants in exchange for cash payments. The bill of information states:
Current website for Hinds County District Attorney |
beginning shortly after June, 2013 and continuing until on or about February of 2016, the exact dates being unknown in the Southern District of Mississippi, the defendant, IVON JOHNSON, an agent of Hinds County, Mississippi, and others, did combine, conspire, confederate, and agree together to commit an offense or offenses against the United States, to wit: Title 18, United States Code, Section 666(a)(l)(B), that is, did corruptly solicit, demand, accept and agree to accept a thing of value from a person, intending to be influenced and rewarded in connection with a transaction and series of transactions of Hinds County District Attorney's Office involving $5,000 or more...
The primary object of the conspiracy was to obtain money in exchange for favorable treatment in court proceedings in Hinds County, Mississippi..
1. IVON JOHNSON accepted money from a co-conspirator, totaling at least $15,000 throughout the conspiracy, on behalf of criminal defendants, including S.B., an individual charged with a felony offense in Hinds County, Mississippi.
2. On or about October 20, 2014, IVON JOHNSON, as an agent of the Hinds County District's Attorney Office, moved to reduce the bond amount of S.B. from approximately $15,000 to approximately $3,500 in exchange for approximately $500.
What is interesting is Mr. Johnson apparently waived indictment since the U.S. Attorney (in Shreveport) submitted a bill of information to the court. The bill of information thus begs the following question: Has Mr. Johnson "flipped" on anyone?
The District Attorney is arrested for allegedly wrongfully communicating with criminal defendants in jail. The Justice Court Clerk is accused of accepting bribes. Now one of the lead prosecutors in the District Attorney's office is charged with lowering bonds in exchange for bribes.
Stay tuned.

Eyebrows raised.
Not the only thing going on in fed court. Isn't today the day of reckoning for more individuals in the Epps/McCrory scandal?
Seems to fit with "catch and release". Will be a great day for Jackson residents when this tangle is removed and crime can be prosecuted as it should be.
Not really. This is what they wanted. This is what they voted for. The WMPR crowd supports this.
LOL @ "eyebrows raised"

This has been going on since the Ed Peters days as part of a very corrupt Hinds Courthouse gang.
I have long been wanting and waiting of the the feds to come in and start busting up Hinds County / Jackson
Is there an honest person left in Jackson?
@9:19, Sure, his name is um, er, well..... Never mind....
What else do the natives of Jackson and Hinds county need to see to realize that this ship is sinking? The African American community has demonstrated that it can not take the reins of control and govern appropriately. I guess the "it is our turn to lead" is not working out for them or anyone. Remember, there has been black leadership in Jackson for two decades. This just did not happen overnight. Meanwhile the capitol city is burning.
Great reporting Kingfish.
Is this part of the reason people with arrests after arrests out on bond keep getting released and arrested for other crimes?
The sheer foolishness of these newly minted public officials is amazing. Simply because they observe that these activities have been going on for years under the old "good ole boy system" they think they have arrived and can do the same thing. Crooks like Ed Peters could operate with relative impunity within a network of entrenched
influence, but these new Black guys have no such network and operate on their own. Stupid. They have no political or legal backing from
anyone who can help them when the chips are down. They should concentrate on doing their jobs, and leave the stealing to the "good ole boys" who know how to do it!
9:38 Has it right on the money. Its time for some Action in Jackson. Lets elect someone or several someone's that can get the job done. Close down the free housing in Jackson and let the non-taxpaying freeloaders go elsewhere or go to work.
"it is our turn to lead" = "it is our turn to be corrupt with extremely limited impunity"
"and others"
Word is RSS filed Ivon Johnson a couple of weeks ago. Odd that he didn't file charges against Esq. Johnson if he knew about these shenanigans.
Ed Peters was one of the most corrupt DA's in the country. Was busted more than once by the FBI but always got off by flipping on people. The last one Ed was involved in was the Scruggs case.
Get out now for it is much worse than most know. The last few alive with any money will have a hell of a tax bill. Other places in the country are just not as bad off as Jackson. This is worst run City in America.
Ivon was fired recently. But how does someone who is practically illiterate get hired in the DA's office anyway? Anyway, there's more stuff Ivon is implicated in.
How many people working for RSS have been busted? Anyone keeping count?
Sickening, and especially sickening for the cops who risk their lives out there.
As someone commented, a lot of the corruption goes back to Ed Peters, who is still not in prison. A rancid legacy.
Theres a DA who owns a bail bonding outfit, but only Jackson being out the usual comments.
11:09 - Ivon Johnson has an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering. Lack of intellect is not his problem; apparently greed and lack of respect for any laws and rules is one of his problems.
Crooked ass Caucasians have been doing this for years. Who's to say this gentleman even committed these crimes. The news and blog is always looking for a story until it's your story to be told. Robert Smith just got busted and now looking for a way out by presenting names of "alleged" criminals/crimes. Give it up people I'm sure if Ivon Johnson did do these things and helped lil Ray Ray out or Susie and Roy you didn't have nothing to say. Get over it and go back to your Black Lives Matter protesting!!
OK - 2:04. We understand. Ivon couldn't be guilty here, just like RSS isn't - they are both black. The only thing going on here is that white folks are trying to make these black officials look bad.
Thanks for the explanation.
@2:04
It seems like Ivon must have thought he himself was guilty, otherwise why is there a bill of information filed instead of an indictment?
@3:07
I don't think 2:04 cared to read any part of what was published. It is strictly a racial thing for 2:04.
My bet 3:07, is that it is because he is "talking"....big time.
So who else will fall besides the Incredible Ivon John?
Kingfish you know this is a bunch of bolona, they trying to use Ivon to lie on Robert.. Now let me say this Jim Hood and Stanly Alexander is behind this..
A bill of information SCREAMS that he's already flipped.
He'll plead to conspiracy, get 6 months & sell Shuler down the river.
"Rolling down the river"
I wonder where RSS is going get his eyebrows waxed down at Eglin in Florida?
This is sad. Throw away a career for a damn inmate! Should have took a course in corrections 101!. "Who can you trust, if you can't trust an inmate". Surlely not the DA.
I know Ivon- or at least I thought I knew Ivon- I can not believe that he is going to jail- ouch
Ivon Johnson has waived his right to have a grand jury hear his case and has either agreed to implicate others or he and the government have agreed on a plea. If he accumulated $15k in $300-$500 transactions, that's 30 or more counts; so another indication that the deal has been agreed on. While I understand that many of the posters on this site would like to see RSS implicated, don't hold your breath. It will likely be one or two defense attorneys, if anyone.
Obviously there is tremendous scrutiny on the DA's office and the environment over there is toxic. Any Assistant DA playing fast and loose is playing into the hands of the AG feds and unless he agrees to flip RSS he/she will probably go down hard. Too bad they don't do this in other law enforcement agencies and didn't in Ed Peters old office since he had the right "connections". Hate to call this selective prosecution, and if it's the beginning of a statewide effort to root out this stuff it's worth it. But I doubt it.
While it is probably true that the same things went on when Jackson was still a white city the blacks should have watched a little closer. You need to use your brain if you want to be a crook and not go to jail. If you are not very smart the decision to become a criminal might not be a good idea. You have to try to hide the fact, not brag about it.
So 9:49, what I'm hearin is that if you have the "Good Ole Boys "pulling your butt out of the fire it's okay but if not, don't try it. And the Good Ole Boys get their punishment how? These crimes are reserved for the "Good Ole Boy?"
