The new airport's "master plan"

The Jackson Airport Commission produced a "master plan" for the construction of a new airport.  JJ copied the report and posted a copy below.  The report provides a roadmap for the construction of the airport.  The highlights are:

*The Mississippi Air National Guard told Jackson it would need longer runways when it began using "jet-type" aircraft. Jackson faced the same demands from commercial airlines. In short, Jackson needed a larger airport for jet aircraft.
*The commission and Airport Use Panel met in Washington, D.C. and determined that Hawkins Field was not a realistic solution to the problem.
*The commission chose a site in Rankin County for the new airport.
*The runway system would consist of three paved runways. Two were to be parallel and the third would serve as a crosswind runway. This system could serve "up to 80 operations per house".
*At least one runway would be 8,500 feet to meet the requirements of the military.
*A wind coverage chart is published on page six.
*Trans Texas Airways and Eastern Airlines had pending applications for Jackson service (p.7).  Delta Airlines and Southern Airways were the only airlines operating at Hawkins Field.
*The terminal area would require space of 26,781 square feet.  It was project to increase to 31,759 in 1980.
*The observation deck was built to accommodate the "sight-seers" that were expected as jet aircraft were a "new thing" in Mississippi.
*The plans allowed for expansion of the single-level terminal building to a two-level building if it was needed.
*The apron could handle over ten aircraft.  It was projected to expand to thirteen plus in 1980.
* A map of the parcels of land purchased from the sellers is published on page eleven.
*The first stage of the construction was estimated to cost $4.16 million. The second state was estimated to cost another $2 million.  The third stage estimate was $1.5 million. Ultimate stage construction was estimated to cost $2.9 million.

What engineering company worth their salt would miss the reservoir on the map?

Anonymous said...

Really hope that 3:03pm is kidding

Anonymous said...

Duh 3:03PM. This plan was written in 1958. Construction on the Rez did not begin until 1960.

Anonymous said...

Gee 3:03PM He left out I-55, I-20 and I-220 too.

Anonymous said...

3:03 - maybe it's because the reservoir wasn't built yet.

I think I see red's place on it though.

Not just the rez, or Interstates. There is no 'Flowood' on this map. Or Lakeland Drive into Jackson. But there is Whitfield - guess that's where they got the bodies to populate this area of Rankin County.

Lakeland's on there, but it only runs east from Old Canton to a little past Ridgewood.

I worked on building the airport between between my sop and Jr. Year of college. There was no I-20 etc only Hy 80. Worked from 5AM till 5pM 6 days a week. &1.50 per hour 1/1/2 time over 40 hours, paid for my Jr year. only the east runway was initially built. Flew out of the airport for many years. It was convenient and had adequate service for a city the size of Jackson. All cities Jacksons size are having the same issues as the airlines are reducing flights to smaller cities. Dont have a dog in the fight over who should manage the airport but you can't question that it is aregional facility

I can remember in the late 60s maybe early 70s getting on Lakeland Drive and going toward what is now Airport Road. The bridges were built, but the road bed was just gravel. It was all farmland out that way, and I remember a windmill that was on the south side of the road about half way out. At the time most people wondered where in the hell was this road going. Also, at the time there was no Flowood except for the area around Hwy 80 near the Pearl River.

...but you can't question that it is a regional facility ...

You are correct. YOU CAN NOT. The airport serves 40% of Mississippi or more.

Nobody, NO ONE, could have predicted back in the late 50s the shithole that Jackghanistan has become.

Jackghanistan is out-of-control, PERIOD, no matter how many soundbites you hear out of our well-meaning Mayor or the platitudes (GOP campaign cash-ola) from the remaining vestiges of the elite White Power Structure still residing behind their gated neighborhoods and off-duty JPD officer security patrols.

It has been determined that THOUSANDS of Jacksonians have been stealing water. WHERE ARE THE PROSECUTIONS?

To conclude that the major regional airport in the southern United States serving such a large area of the State of Mississippi should be left to the dysfunction of Jackson city government is to blindly assume that the voters of Jackson's Ward 3, for example, will someday summon (before his death) the strength to send their openly racist freak Kenneth Stokes to the electoral showers.

The State of Mississippi should have taken over the Jackson Airport well before 2016. The Republican majority are fools if they think matters will stay the same or improve.

JACKSON IS LOST.

If you don't use ALL CAPS, no one will take you seriously.

Under what authority, 7:41, except for your racists rants against Jackson. The airport is not property of the state. It was built by the City of Jackson and if you don't want to use it that is your choice. Drive to Birmingham (oh, that's right, it is under black leadership and is broke.) Maybe, drive to Atlanta. Can't do that either. Memphis. Under your definition, a shithole just like NOLA. What are you gonna do? Guess you will have to take a bus.

The Jackson airport is owned by Jackson just like those other regional airports in surrounding states (B'ham, Memphis, NOLA, Hotlanta) are regional airports but are not owned by their states. Just because you can't stand Jackson doesn't give your argument any legitimacy. Nor does it give Harkins bill any legality either.

It isn't a matter of 'the Republican majority' either. Overall, they are smart enough to know that the state has no basis to 'take over' property owned by Jackson - unless, of course, they want to take over the entire city by putting it into receivership. Frankly - I would be in favor of that move but until then it would be the utmost of liberalism to try to take away the city property just because somebody wants to.

The State giveth and the State taketh away.

This comment from anonymous had an offending first sentence but the rest was fine:

please explain where the "State gaveth" the airport. City of Jackson bought the property and built the airport. The MS National Guard did pay for part of it - the part that they used (their hangers, support facilities, etc. - you know, those things that you probably have never seen.) The State didn't give a damn thing at the Jackson airport - so if they try to taketh, realize that would mean they could take whatever they wanted to - maybe the trailer park next to your Rankin County cookie cutter subdivision.

Truth be told....the State should and is inevitably going to have to take over the City of Jackson.

It is not the fault of the current leaders but rather the fault of the past 5 mayors for failing to have the vision to see the needs of the City and budgeting for it.

Jackson's needs dwarf its abilities to pay for the needs.

Eventually....parts of Madison, Rankin, Copiah and Warren will have to absorb the bottom of the barrel which is Jackson...or another county structure put in place altogether. 150,000 broke, jobless, uneducated, check cashing, weave selling, drug dealing, car washers cannot support Jackson....period.

"150,000 broke, jobless, uneducated, check cashing, weave selling, drug dealing, car washers cannot support Jackson....period."

And that, my friends, is the real bottom line.

Anonymous said...

Jackson should sell it to the State. That would pay for a couple pot holes to be filled.

Anonymous said...

If Jackson did sell the airport the money from the sale would disappear. Just like the taxes paid. Just like any money Jackson gets from it's citizens. It would end up in the pocket of the elected officials. Always has and looks like it will continue.

Anonymous said...

9:30 - Kinda like Madison County's money was ending up in those elected officials pockets, and the City of Canton's money was ending up in those as well. Difference is - Canton threw out most of the crooks (starting with the Mayor) and Madison threw out theirs (except of course Griffin, but now he has been castrated). Hinds took care of theirs - at least til the next election. Problem still remains with the crooks that control Jackson.

1:14 PM

You better check in on the election challenge.....I hear that Banks is about to be back in his seat...and man will it be a show then.

Anonymous said...

I didn't see Ross Barnett's name on the property map. I smell some 60-year old shenanigans.

Anonymous said...

@3:14 - so "you hear"? Interesting. Who are you hearing from? Do they, or you, have any idea what you are hearing about? Probably Dorsey/Rudy's dream of returning, but I'd bet against it.

EVEN IF Banks won the challenge and came back - I'd bet he would be in the 3-2 minority and the show won't change.

But, I don't listen to the street talk. Rather, I'll wait and see what 'da Judge has to say. With the crap that Dorsey has tried to initiate to influence this case, I'd rather put my money on the problems he might have with the bar. And I'm not referring to the one at Char.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
