Millsaps College issued the following statement.
Millsaps is kicking off a new era: women’s flag football is now officially on the Majors’ roster! The college will be the first in the state to offer women’s flag football as a varsity sport. This game-changing move is all about creating opportunities and giving female student-athletes the chance to break barriers and bring a brand-new spirit of competition to campus. The team launches as a club sport in spring 2026, building momentum as it cruises into becoming the 19th varsity-sponsored sport at Millsaps in the spring of 2027. This will be Mississippi’s first varsity collegiate program. “This is a historic moment for Millsaps and for women’s athletics in Mississippi,” said athletic director Justin LeBlanc. “By investing in women’s flag football, we’re creating new pathways for student-athletes to shine, to lead and to inspire. We’re committed to providing equal opportunities and being at the forefront of this exciting movement in collegiate sports.” Flag football has been one of the fastest-growing sports in the country. At least 65 NCAA schools are sponsoring women’s flag football at either the club or varsity levels. Flag football has also been added as a sport for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Flag football programs for young girls are launching across the state and country, offering further evidence of the growing demand for the sport. The move signals a major step forward in creating opportunities for women in sports and gives Majors fans yet another sport to cheer for. The excitement is already resonating with future student-athletes. “For women like me who’ve dreamed of this opportunity, Millsaps is making it real,” said Elyse Warren, Millsaps women’s basketball player and future flag football star. “This program means we can play the sport we love at the highest level and be part of something bigger, a movement that inspires future generations.” The inaugural season will feature games against colleges across the Southeast, giving Millsaps student-athletes the chance to compete and grow while building a foundation for NCAA Division III play in 2027.

Probably won't be a popular opinion, but just as men should not be pursuing women's spaces, women should not be pursuing men's spaces.
Why wouldn't you offer a sport that puts rear ends in seats, that people will actually come watch!! I am all for supporting the ladies and adding new sports but this is silly, no one gives a shit about this.
Won't be long until Goodell turns the NFL into a flag league.
12:54, the students who play it care about it. Nobody at Millsaps is worried about how many spectators come to watch. This is for the interested students.
Millsaps gonna Millsaps. If they can do something to apologize for white men they will try it. That said, whatever they want to do with sports at Millsaps is fine. I'm a Millsaps alum and half the people I graduated with didn't know they had a men's football team. If the ladies want to play flag football, good for them. It's less ridiculous than Millsaps bringing in varsity corn hole or pickleball, which I'm sure were other options being considered.
This might attract 5 students. Which will actually help Millsaps.
Then don't support them! I doubt you are providing any support to Millsaps anyway.
When I was an undergrad there in the not so distant past, we had M and W's lacrosse teams, which did not appear to survive the decade for a variety of reasons. That said, it got a handful students paying tuition that otherwise would not have attended.
Seems like the push for flag football is a top down phenomenon. When probably about 15%-20% of your current student body is there just to play football, why not give this a rip.

If it is a varsity sport then they have to have equipment, transportation to games, on and on, and all of those things cost money. Money is made by putting rear ends in seats.........this is not "for the students", this is "for the college" If this was just for fun-zies it would be an intramural team and not a sanctioned varsity sport. Again, I want to see them do well and I want people to come support the school, but they had better options that people would actually come watch.
WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE???
12:49 "women should not pursue men's spaces" - flag football does not belong to men!
12:54 "no one gives a sh*t" - have you taken a poll of everyone?
This is great! We used to play women's intramural flag football in college and it was very popular.
