Food Fight!

GOP calls video "creepy."

The 2026 Mississippi Senatorial election took a nasty turn  after Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith's Democratic opponent, Scott Colom, posted a phony phone call with the Senator on social media last night.  The Mississippi Republican Party was not amused as it filed a complaint with the FBI today.

Colom announced his candidacy to run against the Republican incumbent, Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith yesterday.

The fun began when the 16th District Attorney posted this video on Facebook last night:

Chairman Michael Hurst wasted no time in firing back as he issued the following statement this morning.

Posted below is the GOP's FBI complaint.

The video is very cringe and not even slightly funny. But hardly illegal.

The left is desperate. Earlier in the week the loser Gov. Tim Walz wished Trump was dead.

Anonymous said...

When did everybody become so soft lol.

Anonymous said...

God I long for the days when people just ran for office based on lies about shit they were going to accomplish, and pandering to voters. Remember when Jim Hood ran the ads on his farm with him sitting in a rocking chair oiling a shotgun......we all laughed........it was dumb but at least he didn't stoop to this level.

Anonymous said...

I never knew Mike Hurst was so soft. Smith on the other hand, of course she is.

He is shocked that someone has "...stooped so low as to impersonate the voice of a sitting United States Senator for his personal benefit and gain."

Oh heavens, I do declare. Someone has dared to impersonate the voice of a sitting US Senator. Not a sitting US Senator! Have we no sense of decency!

Is he serious with this nonsense? GTFO

Cringe and stupid is not a felony. Should not have been written up like this. Clearly not an attempt to extort or deceive and does not remotely meet prosecutive guidelines. Total over reaction by MSGOP. Just a campaign intern level stunt at best on both sides.

Anonymous said...

Easily offended, easily influenced…

Anonymous said...

I feel fairly confident Mike Hurst knows the law. Possibly even better than a sitting DA...

Anonymous said...

I will defer to Hurst, a former US attorney, as to whether there were potential violations of criminal laws. Soft or not, the law is the law. As a member of the MS Bar, a DA, and one aspiring to higher office, Colom should be also concerned with the potential ethical violations from this stunt. Rules 8.2 and 8.4 could be applicable. Regardless, it is a bad look, and one beneath the dignity of the office for which he is seeking election.

Anonymous said...

Pretty clear violation of the statute. Not sure what is "soft" about asking for it to be enforced. It was cringy, unfunny, and I doubt it will win over anyone undecided. I would actually be curious as to what Hurst was thinking if he didn't respond like this. Nothing he said was inaccurate. Even citing a less egregious instance of similar behavior. I'm kind of surprised he didn't have more of a tantrum, honestly.

Could there be two worse candidates to choose from?

Anonymous said...

As a Republican, I have always thought that Cindy Hyde-Smith was goofy, but I think this clown surpasses her!

Anonymous said...

As much as I dislike Cindy Hyde and cannot vote for her, one has to wonder if Scott Colom, a self described "Christian", is playing with a full deck.

Anonymous said...

As a whole us humans are no longer evolving positive. Read Enoch and get ready baby !

Republican party used to the tort reform party. Seems like the least little thing they threaten legal action of some form whether civil or criminal.

Anonymous said...

Shooting yourself in the foot is a great way to begin a campaign.

This is the verbal equivalent of throwing a 6" Subway sandwich at a 'roided up, full body armored, face masked ICE agent.

Anonymous said...

Geez, as a woman, I hate that she's played into that" fragile female who whines when her feelings are hurt" characterization and can't just stand up for herself. And anyone who thought that was "real" shouldn't be allowed to vote.

Anonymous said...

No violation of the statute whatsoever. The cringe actress did not act as an official in any official capacity of any sort, nor did she demand much less receive anything of value whatsoever. Mimicking a Senator’s voice in a ridiculous stunt is not a crime. What pearl clutching fool would assert that on paper? Ohhhh, a member of the Rankin County Mafia. The Rankin and MSGOP keep batting Zero. Over nothing.

Anonymous said...

Let's do make mocking a political opponent a federal crime! Then we could put our entire Congress in prison!

Anonymous said...

Unforced error. Colom is nowhere near ready.

Anonymous said...

The leader of the MSGOP, Mike Hurst, is calling for "leaders who are honest, honor the law, and respect the institutions of our government"

C'mon man. Even people who voted for Donald Trump three times admit that he is none of those things. Call out your own.

Anonymous said...

Is Colom also a "part-time" DA?

This man is very dangerous, he was and still is backed by the infamous George Soros who is hell bent on destroying our country by putting in office these left wing progressives!!!

Who remembers the TV ad where Jim Hood portrayed Mike Hurst as a “cute” poodle who “won’t hunt”.
Best ad in Mississippi politics

Anonymous said...

Please check Mike Hurst for long Covid. He's showing signs of being a Democrat. First he goes hard for socialism...I mean education reform bs. Now he's big mad they prank called meemaw.

Anonymous said...

While the video was, at best, mildly amusing, the GOP acting butthurt about it is hysterical. Those are the REAL snowflakes. I really don't want to vote for this guy, but I wouldn't vote for either of our do-nothing, Trump-rubber-stamp, senators if they were running for the Mexican border.

The fact that Mississippians continue to vote these same place-holders back in office, term after term, shows that we really are at the bottom of...well...every listing of US statistics.

Anonymous said...

She like to sit on the “front row” young Colom didn’t get the memo.

Excellent comment, 1:36

What a bunch of snowflakes! Get a sense of humor

Anonymous said...

Well Kingfish, you should have given the other "Idiot of the Day" award to this
Democrat Scott Colom cartoon character.

I don't think the Mississippi GOP needs to sue him .... but buy him more rope.

I had forgotten about Jim Hood's shotgun/rocking chair ad .
That was funny as hell. ( reminiscent of Cliff Finch's lunchbox & bulldozer ads back in the mid 70's).

Anonymous said...

Collom is a buffoon.

Anonymous said...

“Christian”? More like a fool.

Unfortunately my jive isn’t up to par and I couldn’t under half of what that turkey said.

Anonymous said...

As someone who has been in the political campaign 'game' for many years, this ad was not one of the best. But, it was certainly not one worth the crockidile tears being shed by my GOP brethern. All those years in the game were played on and with the GOP team - but framkly, I'm ashamed that they would stoop to this level of stupidity with their reaction to this campaign stunt.

Criminal? Not in the least. Worth the effort? Not at all. Should have ignored it and moved on. All this campaign is going to center on is whether folks like and support Donald Trump next November, cause Hyde-Smith is and will be seen as nothing but a rubber stamp for him. If the party feels safe in the hands of Trump, they shouldn't let an ad like this take center stage.

But - the question is, with Trump's falling popularity, will he still carry the day in our Trumpiest state?

Anonymous said...

This wasn't a great way for Colom to introduce himself to most of the state's voters, who have never heard of him. I still remember Brandon Pressley's introduction, when he identified with the guy who stops at his local gas station to get coffee & a sausage biscuit on his way to work. Presley was a populist who came so close to winning with a home grown message. I've never heard of Colom before now, but he comes across as a spoiled, privileged idiot. And I'm not a great fan of Cyndi Hyde-Smith.

Anonymous said...

Hilarious. This may or may not have been taken from Fox and Friends. Lawrence did it to Kilmeade.

Anonymous said...

I resent him for calling himself a Christian and acting this way. He is pitiful.

Anonymous said...

"I never knew Mike Hurst was so soft. Smith on the other hand, of course she is" .

Has Senator Hyde-Smith even responded to this ad ?
Like her or not ... her intelligence is light years beyond this clown.

Anonymous said...

1:51 - I have wondered that myself many times during my voting years. Where politics is concerned, the answer is a resounding yes. Think Bennie Thompson.

Anonymous said...

Colom is saying his campaign is motivated by revenge - because Sen. Hyde-Smith squelched his nomination to a federal judgeship. By mimicking an Internet prank (where guys call each other to tell them good night), he's saying he doesn't have a vision for the state - it's all about him & his resentment at being passed over. He must have hired a campaign staff of cool kids from out of state.

Anonymous said...

EJ, do you really think Soros is connected to everything?

Anonymous said...

Seriously people Mike Hurst is a former US Attorney & knows the laws! I hope you run for Governor Mike!

Anonymous said...

Rudy Giuliani was a U.S. Attorney too, but we can all see what politics did to him.

Anonymous said...

@6:55 - I too would like to see Mike running for office - again. Supported him last time and would again, for most anything. And as a former US Atty and a pretty damn smart lawyer, I would love to have him representing me. And I guess he does, as Chairman of 'my' party.

But - the idea that he wants an FBI investigation, and to charge Colom with a cirme for this political ad, is nothing but pandering to the base; not good lawyering.

Let the games continue. We will spend all our time talking about George Soros, and they will spend their time talking about CHS's butt-love of Trump. And for the next 14 months, we will hear little else, other than how Trump's policies are hurting our state while Cindy supports them anyway - and how Colom is a liberal crime-loving wannabe.

Let's don't get excited over this part of campaigning, at least not this early. Sounds too much like Justice Waller getting his panties in a wad over Tate's campaign ads, after he had been running one suggesting Tate was a kindergarten plaything.

Anonymous said...

Lighten up, Francis. The part is so soft.
The GOP should run an ad with CHS answering the phone, saying, "Hello! Oh hello! I didn't know you were in politics! Who is this again? What? You are going to run against me? Oh, bless your heart, sir! I guess I got three little words for you: BRING IT ON." And then she hangs up the phone, looks at the camera, and says, "I'm Cindy Hyde-Smith, and I want to continue being your Senator in Washington." You read it here first.

Anonymous said...

Hurst is in a lose-lose situation with this as far as message board fodder. This reaction: soft and idiotic. Respond in kind: childish and weak. No response: scared and incompetent. At least with this response he does have legal precedent as some semblance of a foundation for it. I agree with 9:48 though, that would be a phenomenal idea. Just a "New phone. Who dis?" type of ad.

Anonymous said...

CHS should respond in kind with an AI generated call between Colom and Chowke where Colom asks Chowke to get him on the next private jet headed to Boca Raton.

Anonymous said...

I'll vote for Cindy Bryant Hyde-Smith if it means keeping a republican seat and only for that reason. But, be careful what you wish for...She'll retire in two years and Tater will occupy that seat.

Anonymous said...

I did not think anyone could ever make me consider voting for that ding dong CHS again. But this guy may have done it.

Howard Dean level career failure with this embarrassment. Just a horrible way to intro yourself and immediately look like a chump.

Anonymous said...

"I'll vote for Cindy Bryant Hyde-Smith if it means keeping a republican seat and only for that reason."

And that's why we're in a race to the bottom, where elections are decided in the primaries, by the fanatics of either party, due to gerrymandered election maps.

All this false indignation from the GOP which allows the occupier of the White House to sell MAGA crap all day long, what a joke. Mike Hurst might have been former U.S. Attorney, but he can't read a statute very well if he thinks this prank fits the one he cites.

Anonymous said...

Not illegal, surely, but certainly tacky and off-putting. I wouldn’t cast a vote for this clown, but that doesn’t mean I’ll cast a vote for the other clown either. There’ll be a third party on the ballot, and it’s not a law that I have to vote for anybody at all if there’s nobody on the ballot who’s worth a shit. Because, me, I’m sick to the top of my gullet with Democrats, Republicans, and chickenshit, road-to-the-bottom politics as usual.

Anonymous said...

The plain text of 18 USC 912 clearly does not apply here. The stunt is dumb and childish (if that really wasn’t her), and it certainly wouldn’t win me over if I were on the fence. However, with no other fed statute cited other than 18 USC 912, this looks to be a frivolous, and frankly, silly, matter.

Anonymous said...

I won't vote for any democrat running for state or federal Senate or House seat; however, please will a few republicans primary 'Mee-Maw' and send her back to the garden at home.

If I recall, our Lt. Gubnor had paid political ads for years featuring made-up people and even made a cartoon character of hizzown seff.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
