It seems JPD has been playing around with the crime stats again. Of course, JPD Command didn't mean to do it mind you. It was just an honest mistake, you see. WLBT reported last night:
More than a hundred people have been killed in the Capital City since 2023 began, a number that only recently surged because of previously undisclosed homicides that the Jackson Police Department has now released to WLBT.
Data from JPD shows 24 additional killings that the agency waited months to share with WLBT and — by extension — the public....
Those additional homicides change 2023′s year-to-date numbers from 78 to 102, affecting the picture of crime in the Capital City.
Before the department released this information, Jackson had what appeared to be a 25 percent decrease in killings this year over last.
Now, the total number of homicides this year is only down slightly from last year’s 103 at this time.... Rest of article.

According to WLBT Jackson Homicide tracker we're at 102 on day 283. Their tracker for 2022 had 90 on this day last year. We are on track for 131 or 132 this year. 2022 WLBT tracker ended at 120.
102/283 = 0.3604
0.3604*365=131.55
My question is are these 24 accounted for in this data set? If not the true number would be 162 for end of year.
Look- It's just 24. Anyone could overlook that.
I commented too soon. So that puts EOY at 132 or 133 provided we don't have a particularly nasty month.
Chowke's Marxist fuzzy math.
Where is the "falsifying documentation" line at? I would think they have walked up to and are peering over it.........
Cap'n Abraham Thompson says: “I think the most important thing for us to do is to identify the problem today and address it properly, make sure we put things in place to make sure that it doesn’t happen again.”
No, Dumbo...The most important thing is to put more boots in orientation, on the ground and in patrol cars - Key Word PATROL.
Area funeral homes would be a more accurate source of this information.
Imagine all the crimes that are never made public.
Who can be surprised. The mair was and is an artist at concealing federal documents detailing what was expected of the city, for years monkeying around with crime data, going months without releasing any information regarding crimes, concealing the number of employees at JPD, withholding information on professional employee numbers in various departments, not being transparent about contract negotiations and staffing....Hell, who could doubt he would issue an instruction to "Let's get them murder numbers down - You know what I mean".
8:52,
The 24 are accounted in the data set for this year's number, both in the bar graph and line graph that monitors the whole year.
Where it gets tricky is the 18 from last year that JPD didn't tell us about until January. We never got victim names or exact dates, just monthly totals. That's why the year-to-date line graph for 2022 doesn't match the actual count as of 10/9/22, which was 103.
I hope that clears up any confusion. I can answer any questions about the tracker (or corresponding data) that you have because I've been managing it since 2016.
cj lemaster:
Based on what you just said the entire data set is compromised and shouldn't be taken seriously by anyone. Whoever manages their crime information has "massaged" this data until its just bupkis
All of it
Which is REALLY FUNNY because we are talking like N=130
These are problems you expect to deal with in data sets like N=500,000 and even then based on the whacky reporting you couldn't ever publish this and have it taken seriously by anyone
Ridiculous
NO ONE KNOWS HOW many folks are getting killed every year in Jackson via violent crime
Better question, how many of the shooters have been sent to prison? Any tracker for that information?
"...to ensure these cases don’t fall through the cracks (again) in the future."
I've seen cracks and I've seen the Grand Canyon, the latter a better fitting metaphor for Jackson's reputation for undisclosed data, crime stats, budgeting, auditing, EPA letters, etc.
9:43,
I don't agree with that. The reporting for 2022 is accurate on a monthly or yearly basis. Because we were never provided exact date information for those missing homicides, the daily tracker can't be used. We even have a disclaimer on the tracker that explains all of this.
Your argument is that we can't use this information because of data kept from the public. That data has been released now. And we know that data hasn't been massaged because these were used in internal documents not meant for public disclosure.
I didn't start covering this last week. We've been tracking killings in Jackson -- not just investigated by JPD, but also Capitol Police and HCSO -- for seven years. It's the most reliable homicide data we have anywhere. If the department fails to provide the public with information on additional cases, that's a failure of the department, not our data gathering abilities.
Where is Rukia and her band of merry community activists demanding transparency from Mayor Chokwe?
At this rate, by the end of his current term, 1% of the city’s population will have been murdered under his administration.
Per capita, the murder rate is soaring, considering how rapidly the population is declining.
How in the world can a city fun a Water Utility Billing Department when they can't even count to 102?
Patiently waiting for Chok's press conference on this.
Well, if Mississippi didn't use RICO to attached to the crime of one individual charged but rather allowed indictment of the entire "gang", we could better rid ourselves of gangs.
If we were harder on those who engage in domestic abuse and strengthened protections for the victims, that would help as well.
And, if we could involuntarily commit those with violent mental illnesses and addictions that triggered violence instead of the still incredulously stupid need to wait until they had harmed themselves or others, we could reduce the tragic consequences.
And,if we kept guns out of the hands of all of the above and gave law enforcement the means to remove guns from the crazy and violent and felons without a hassle, but NO NRA was every fool to have a weapon!
10:15, the answer to your question is that you won't hear anything out of the Mayor's sister nor any of the other race hustlers like her. This issue is 99+% black on black. Don't expect race hustlers to spend time on black culture problems. No money/grifting in that.
Thank you to LeMaster, WLBT, and Kingfish. I think we would get a lot less information without y’all in Jackson. WAPT should and can do better in my opinion.
Really sad and wild what the second 10:15 said. Harvard owes Jackson an apology.
Where is the harpy that comes at us for posting facts about how dangerous Jackson is?
And for the record, I do not dispute the fact that MOST of the time you can attend the fair or drive on 55 without getting shot. I (unlike him) am not appealing to emotions and suggesting an overreaction.
But for him and his ilk to make fun of folks for "bad mouthing" Jackson or as I call it...Factually stating the obvious, is unacceptable.
I feel sorry for the kids of these Social Justice Warriors that genuinely believe it is better to risk their safety than to be (incorrectly) labeled as racist for choosing to visit safer cities. God help Jackson and the people that cannot afford to flee the unabated violence.
I have nothing but respect for the remaining COJ residents that want to shed the light on the horrible plight of Jackson and improve it.
But for Black leaders to suppress the murders of mostly black people is revolting.
It is criminal what Chokwe and the COJ judicial system has done to poor POC in Jackson.
I appreciate CJ for this. So few media members seem to be willing to speak up for Black on Black crimes.
This is a very common tactic used buy law enforcement agencies. For example, classify an auto theft as unauthorized use of a motor vehicle; do that enough and show a reduction in auto thefts. Grand larceny as a misdemeanor larceny and magically property crime is down.
Be skeptical anytime the chief or sheriff reports glowing numbers to show how great a job they are doing.
"This isn’t the first time that the department has withheld information about homicide cases from residents. Data obtained by 3 On Your Side earlier this year showed 18 killings that had not been reported by JPD in 2022."
If it happens one year, it may indeed be unintentional. But two years in a row?
No wonder WLBT reported in May that killings were down 37% this year - the police department "inadvertently" omitted many homicides this year in its notifications to the news media. Is there anything this mayor & his administration won't lie about? Or try to cover up?
https://www.wlbt.com/2023/05/12/analysis-homicides-jackson-drop-six-year-low/
Just a perception of 24 overlooked homicides
12:04, you're right. That's why I put in that May article that there were concerns underreporting might have been a factor in that crime drop. Though we didn't have the numbers to support that claim, we included the possibility because of previous issues with the department.
CJ Lemaster
I am the commenter from several posts back about the stats. What you said at 1:19 is what I was talking about. I wasn't saying you guys reporting the numbers was off, I was saying the actual numbers reported BY THE DEPARTMENT was off. If they are giving y'all shitty inaccurate numbers to work with, then none of it is credible. I am sure the actual data compilation by you guys is fine, but what's the saying about silk purses from a sows ear or something like that.......
To clarify all 102 murders include those committed in the CCID and not investigated by JPD? The city needs to eat those numbers too.
Now that we know the (possibly) correct number of murders for the year to date in Jackson, will the local media outlets report for each murder hereafter the total number of murders for the year to date?
Chowke's spin-doctors will work on his response to these JPD lies at his next presser, and the sheeple who vote for him will lap it up.
That number will increase with the holidays coming up…Lord, help us…
Next…
CJ Lemaster @ 1:19 PM - Thanks and good work on updating that May 12th story so quickly.
https://www.wlbt.com/2023/05/12/analysis-homicides-jackson-drop-six-year-low/
The body count of Jackson could be 25,000 and the only thing the idiots in Jackson are concerned about is the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department, that’s all you need to know about Jackson idiots and their thinking.
C.J. - many thanks for the work you do.
We just want the facts - I'll bet you get an email, or 2 or 3, about every death in Jackson - just so you can match the numbers.
Did you do a FOIA for every death in 2022?
Or the first 6 months of 2023?
Whatever happened to this study between JPD & Jackson State to track violent crime so the city knows where the "hot spots" are? It was supposed to have been completed in 2018. Was it continued?
https://www.clarionledger.com/story/news/2019/01/21/how-can-jackson-ms-curb-homicides-2019-its-complicated-murder-killings/2548162002/
And by the way, with JSU's homecoming this weekend, whatever happened with the investigation into 4 people killed at a bar during homecoming a couple of years ago? I believe the bar was called Rain, it was hosting a homecoming party. There was an active shooter shooting into the bar from outside. Were there any arrests?
@7:50AM
More than likely the study was so horribly done and the data so mangled that they never wanted to release the information. Years ago there was a project that was done between a mapping company and JSU that was supposed to provide where I was working updated GIS maps of Hinds County. JSU bragged about how they were getting their Computer Science and other "scholars" to work on the map and database inputting data such as street names and other items. When we got access to the map it was so screwed up you couldn't search for anything. 95% of the street and road names where misspelled so badly you couldn't even search for partial names, Streets with North or South in their names where linked to the wrong streets on the map, the display tag that appeared over the city of Jackson when zoomed out was misspelled as "Jaxson", we looked at the database for a bit and seeing all the shitty work just reported back up the chain that it was at best nonfunctional and worst dangerous to use. The data entered by JSU was so horrible that the entire project was scraped and never spoken of again.
As someone who has worked in the "emergency" aspect of the city and responds to 911 calls - I wont say in what capacity - You are only seeing about 1/2 of what goes on within the city on these news channels. With that being said, JPD is also only reporting about 1/2 of it as well - they are only only showing up on scene of about 3/4 of it - it is not unheard of for 911 to be called and JPD never show up and the incident disperse itself prior to them even showing up. I have been on scene of murders, armed car jackings, etc. that were never once picked up by the news.
Jackson is FAR worse off than one would be lead to believe by watching the news - shocking... I know.
