What exactly do they do all day at these charter school? Sling paint against a wall?

8 of the top 12 school districts are "breakaway" districts that are surrounded by terrible districts but have the advantage of being small and separate from the terrible schools. Clinton is separate from Hinds County (and borders Jackson) yet performs at the third best level in the state.

3 of the remaining four are school districts in which their is a breakaway district that functions at a lower level, although Canton's improvement is to be celebrated, its still 140 points below Madison County.

There's not an exact science to interpreting these raw scores, but if every student in the district made a perfect score, the district score would be 900. The student scores are Levels 1-5, with Level 3 being passing,

Madison County had 70.5% students at Level 4 or 5 in Math and 66% at Level 4 or 5 in English. 87 percent of Madison County students improved their scores from one year to the next.

In the bold new city, 30.4 of students were Level 4 or 5 in Math and 34.3% were 4/5 in English. 71 percent of JPS students improved.

Clinton got their scores on the Math side - 75.9% of students were 4/5 and 92% improved. Impressive.

Canton is an oddity. Does Gluckstadt fall under Canton? Everything else there is exactly what I would expect.

JPS is "recommending" that their IEP-identified students attend charters. This forces the charters to shoulder the burden and improves JPS's test scores in the process. Charters can't say no to the families and must provide the same accomodations as the giant district. It's a monumental task for these small schools.

Waiting on the "Clinton is doomed" guy

@12:53

I ve been in many IEP meetings in my life, not once has anyone ever recommended sending one of those children to a charter school. You are full of sh--

It would take some significant proof before I would believe the Canton scores are valid. And to answer a question, the Canton district extends south and west beyond the Canton city limits and does take in some neighborhoods such as Lake Caroline.

12:32 - the schools in Gluckstadt are part of the Madison Co. district.

Anonymous said...

1:09 - that's not what the students' parents are saying.

Anonymous said...

I’ve seen my fair share of bs in JPS that outsiders wouldn’t believe, but I have a hard time believing 12:53.

As in many things, the Gulf Coast dominates in Mississippi.

Anonymous said...

All the North side of Lake Caroline is in Canton School District

Anonymous said...

@2:20 the coast is an absolute gem for MS…from a Delta boy that loves seafood!

Anonymous said...

2:20 The Gulf Coast is influenced by Southern Louisiana and the New Orleans vicinity more than Mississippi. It's always been a little different than the rest of Mississippi. It helps.

All the arguments in favor of charter schools have been defenestrated.

Anonymous said...

KF, the explanation for Canton's rating can be traced to Carey Wright's formula of grading schools.

Anonymous said...

MS public schools should never be trusted. One of their stunts is to hold back under-performing 3rd graders to re peat, thereby improving 4th grade credentials.

Choice and Voucher accounts enable parents to put kids in school of their choice, thereby rewarding better performing schools with more revenue and punishing punk schools with less revenue.

Clinton is no longer doomed.

@12:27
They do much more. They lobby for more tax payer money for charter schools. And apparently they’re not very good academically.

@4:56
Children are held back becuse they FAILED an early life test. They may fail for many reasons: intellect, socio-economic background, political issues, etc. Look at the data before you print! The charter schools are dragging down otherwise good results from Canton public schools.

Don't we have an issue with the credibility with what's come out regarding the fraud in JPS? Is it in other districts too and just hasn't come out?

Anonymous said...

12:53 is right… not sure if it’s being encouraged but the charters absolutely have to take them and it hurts them. But hey, gotta support that JPS jobs program, amiright??

I don’t believe a single digit of this. Cheating on the scoring of student achievement occurs all across the fruited plain, Atlanta and Dallas just two coming to mind. Compare these scores to the 20 or so (so-called) developed Western countries and I will wager the results are at or very near the bottom of the list.

Jackson missed being a B bone single measly point.

Kingfish: Canton's test taking participation rate was less than 95%. Therefore, by policy they got the hammer dropped on them: Docked a letter grade. I believe there is an appeal process.

If JPS told disabled kids to go to a charter they would be breaking the law.

Here is a pdf that explains the situation to parents of disabled kids: https://sites.ed.gov/idea/files/dcl-factsheet-201612-504-charter-school.pdf

Unless there is a charter school which is setup to specifically serve a certain segment of the disabled population, like the School for the Deaf, for instance, they have to serve the disabled the same as everyone else, just like every other public school has to do.

Those saying otherwise do not appear to be telling the truth. Read the pdf at the above link for the proof.

I worked in the school system for 15 years. Any and all "data" that is reported by them to whoever is collecting it is exaggerated, inflated, or flat out contrived to the max. Believe it.

Everyone in the system is aware of it, but you're not supposed to say a thing about it. Depts. of Education (DOEs) are nothing more than jobs sites. There is very little learning happening. It's just a yearly activity children are forced to do that keeps tens of thousands of folks employed in a so-called feel-good job, but it's the golden handcuffs of PERS they endure the charade for, and so DOEs can spread the money around.

This is great news for Jackson and environs, because I thought there had to be educable children enrolled before there could be any improvements in academic achievement.

Kingfish - when you release school level data, take a look at College and Career Readiness for the high schools.

The suburban schools do as expected, with Madison Central leading the way. The JPS high schools are around a 15% average - with some under 10%. For example, 8% of Lanier graduates are considered college or career ready. That is our city's future workforce. No wonder there is no industry in Jackson.

Anonymous said...

Following 4:56’s logic, Madison Central and St. Andrew’s will have no problem taking all the Wingfield students after it closes or the 92 percent of Lanier students that aren’t college and career ready. What a crap show that would be.

Can Judge Wingate and Ted take over MDE and JPS? Better yet, can the Governor just save the taxpayers a crap ton of money and get rid of MDE and investigate the JPS higher ups?

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
