They're all shrinking. This is old news.

Anonymous said...

Don't worry. We're fast approaching the point where everyone who can leave has already left. The decline will slow down then.

Anonymous said...

If you move to Madison we don't want to hear: "That's not how we did it in Jackson."

Anonymous said...

Like all socialist styled societies the only way to keep people from leaving is to force them to stay. Chokwe hasn't built a wall....yet.

Anonymous said...

Atlas is shrugging in Jackson.

Anonymous said...

The entire metro area will benefit when this trend reverses and our core metro city thrives.

Anonymous said...

Best way to leave might be to for NE Jxn to secede from Commie Chaos, become an independent city.

Anonymous said...

Has the government done a study to see why so many people are leaving these cities? I would really like to know why these cities are in decline. Is there a common denominator?

Anonymous said...

If you are not being paid by local government a guaranteed salary or own a funeral home why stay?

Reading 3 out of the first 5 comments makes me wonder how many people are paid to monitor online information and post their employers' messaging.

I see the same 3 tropes over and over:

1. Jackson is not that bad

2. Socialists are that bad.

3. Miscellaneous Libertarian BS

It should read "The 10 Fastest shrinking METRO Areas"

There is no doubt that the infrastructure problems played a role. Most of the white flight took place earlier.
While housing costs, particularly for apartments are higher in other places, they are ridiculously high in Mississippi.
Many of my widowed friends who needed to sell their homes to have enough money for living expenses as costs were too high to remain in their homes. Finding good apartments in northeast Jackson is difficult.
Those communities that are reducing the high costs of housing are building apartments that are affordable to the middle class and older citizens and that have maintenance standards and building inspection when complaints are made that slum lords find unattractive. It requires them to actually have business expenses so they can fix that which breaks.
Frankly, it's the "de-regulation" that allows utilities and the insurance industry and other essential services to hike prices without any actual increases in expenses other than in executive bonus and perks and the adding unexplained "$1" charges at will ( do that for a million customers and it's real money).
My most amazing " increase" was for a TV app that went from $8 a month to $74 a month. I keep thinking that's a mistake but it's been there for weeks. Now DirectTV can't show WTVD here.
Everyone should watch Johnny Football to see how it's greed that's ruining everything, from housing to entertainment to sports.
How much is enough? When is inflation driven by actual increases in expenses rather than greed? And,when is success from work rewarded to the one/s who excelled at work or the company executives who hired him? If someone working for a company created a patent for the company that resulted in billions, what should his "reward" be?
How did companies end up being allowed not to honor pensions when the companies were sold or " restructured"?
Yes, we have made much of what was once illegal, legal by being blind loyalists to parties and not watching what our representatives are doing or fail to do!

Why would black middle class be leaving? Thought it was all white-flight? Are they racist too? I'm confused. Could it be ALL people want safety, good schools, driveable roads, clean running water. I guess anyone that wants these things is racist?

Had a hot date this past Sat. Upon leaving a restaurant in the Fondren, I looked both ways before crossing the street. At 9p, the corner of Duling and N. State St. was completely empty. Not even tumbleweed. Something is wrong.

10:07 for president 2024!

Hey 10:07, save all that rambling for Facebook

Anonymous said...

Surprise surprise surprise. Was anyone expecting Jackson to have a big surge in population? Almost everyone has their own idea of what is causing it. All it takes is one short drive down a city street. Potholes so bad you have to creep slowly down the street. That gives the thieves and car jackers time to decide where the best spot is to stop you. Burned out and overgrown houses all along the street. Businesses closed. What reason is there for people to live in Jackson?
You can bet the government has paid for many studies and will continue to pay for more while blaming people who have the sense to leave the city.
I can save them a lot of money. Crime and greed. Too much of both. From the citizens up to the elected officials.

@926 for the win!
Who is John Galt?

@10:07 did you go from regular Hulu to Hulu Live accidentally? that increase can't be right...

Anonymous said...

That’s what happens when you murder a huge percentage of the population.

Anonymous said...

If a natural disaster would go ahead and finish off the cities and the current occupants, decent folks might be willing to move back in and rebuild. No decent folks want anything to do with these cities as they are now.

Quick! Jump in the Delorean, Marty! Kingfish is making posts from 2005!

Anonymous said...

They shoulda started in 1980 til now....202/145

Anonymous said...

It is more than simply the number who've left but also who left. So many of who left were higher earning, higher disposable income taxpayers and businesses. At some point the loss of tax revenue will meet the City's budget. But I guess until then...

Anonymous said...

Things will turn around after Jackson gets through spending a lot of that extra money just sitting around on improving the planetarium. By the way, what was the final outcome when the CPA firm was unable to complete the annual audit for lack of financial information. The audit firm refused to sign off on the audit.

Does your city have BO? Find out now why no one wants to be with you anymore.

Anonymous said...

@9:55
Do you honestly expect KF to approve a comment that blames Black People?

Anonymous said...

All the folks blaming "communists" should look at the state population growth relative to other southern states.

It's not just one side of the political spectrum to blame here.

How exactly? Please be specific

Anonymous said...

1007 thanks for the rambling stream of non sequiturs

Anonymous said...

9:39, the answer to your query about why people are leaving Jackson is obviously (in no particular order):

1. Crime - they don't want to be shot going to and from the grocery store;
2. Clean water cannot reliably be provided to them;
3. Garbage - who knows when and whether their garbage will be picked up;
4. No leadership - elect clowns and you have a circus;
5. Safer schools for their children; and
6. Roads that don't have 3 foot potholes that you have to dodge every few blocks.

It would frustrate the hell out of me to pay taxes and have to consistently deal with the lack of services all while the circus of "leaders" do nothing but throw away more tax dollars on "studies".

Anonymous said...

Crime- infrastructure- litter and weeds everywhere including the prime dining and shopping areas- crooked leadership doing who knows what w all the federal funds received- businesses and residents fleeing for cleaner and safe areas in Madison and Rankin-
Potholes that will destroy a vehicle- when will the state auditor’s office do something and investigate the gross mismanagement of funds!!!

Your date was hot and Duling at State vacant because whole town's too hot to leave home...or...you found the only female in the Fondren without piercings, chest tats, blue hair and overalls.

BTW, I lived on OKC 4 years, tumbleweeds were still a pestilence in every windstorm, even in nice suburbs. Course no one dated a tumbleweed in OK, only in the Fondren.

send help please said...

What's wrong with Jackson?

CRIME, including the pathetic elected; mostly the mayor but also the city council, which isn't working.

If outside government takes away the water supply and give us judges that will actually punish criminals it will be a start. Same for sewer.
Same for garbage disposal. [what are the connections with the "mayor" and Richards?]

Time to start a movement for those parts of Jackson east of State Street and north of Northside Drive to seceed. Look at the murder rates in those locations; very small compared to the rest.

Anonymous said...

Where in the hell do the Jackson Fire Dept guys think money for a raise will come from? That is sooooooooo laughable. The citizens don't understand that the money is gone. It left years ago.....

Anonymous said...

@9:35 - How do we get that process started?

10:33 - tell that to the overblown windbag at 10:07. He missed them both.

@10:26 - "I was blah blah blah at 9pm in Fondren blah blah blah". All of these restaurants close at 9pm. Plus, you're full of shit because I was in that area around the same time and it was pretty much what one would expect around closing time in the district. Go pound sand, troll.

Anonymous said...

@3:09, so you are the definitive [anonymous] authority?

Anonymous said...

I had to run a quick errand today and found that the CVS on State St is closed and the old Jitney 14 is now a Grocery Depot. Its happening even faster than you can light a crackpipe.

Feel free to assault some 'The Fondren' sand yourself there, troll.

Get Governor on board to separate NE Jxn from the rest of the City, declare NE Jxn the new capital, we'll build him an incredible, world class but traditional new Governor's Mansion on wooded hill, Northwest of corner of Lakeland and Ridgewood Road, a parcel reserved for State use only.

For PR, we can all wear Tee shirt stating:

The Spirit Moves Us
FREE NE JXN

>build a new governors mansion
You wouldn't even have to build one. Went to an estate sale 6+ months ago that would have been perfect for the Gov's Mansion. backed up to the golf course on Winged Foot Circle. Got a nice Kittinger side table from that esate sale.

I have worked all over the country over the last 50 years and Jackson is by far the worst. I said the many years ago and it is still turn; " get out while you are still alive."

PrayForJackson said...

I am not sure if there are any real estate agents in this comment section, but I would really like to know... Have housing prices in Eastover declined much? Has that neighborhood yet seen a mass exodus to Madison county?

Anonymous said...

CCofJ would not cotton to events at a Governor's Mansion, nor would the parking and security be adequate. The location NW on the wooded hill on state property across Ridgewood from River Hills could be ideal. Winged Foot Circle has some nice residences, but not of sufficient commercial quality and enduring classical character required.

Possibly could site a new State House and Court House nearby.

Opposed? How often do you feel safe in downtown Jackson, day or night?

Anonymous said...

Jackson still has at least one feather in its cap: The dumbass jackson jambalaya comment section crowd really hates it.

Anonymous said...

I just got back from Roanoke, VA. A very nice little city with lots going-on. 100k population and an airport with 6 gates. But, everything nicer than Jackson by a considerable margin, and a vibrant downtown in the evening. For a state capital, Jackson is an embarrassing eyesore that offers very little to the citizens or visitors.

Anonymous said...

The way a hedge funder improves value of a company is to lay off, write off and sell off until a lean and practical core remains. That core in a municipal sense is NE Jxn, the rest is the deadwood, husks, rot and marxist chaos of a fake mayor and his cohorts that should be cast aside to wallow in its depravity.

Anonymous said...

Of course it's shrinking. There are only two, maybe three neighborhoods in NE Jackson that are nice. The rest is a garbage dump without clean water, drivable roads, or waste management. It's a miracle there's anyone left at all.

Anonymous said...

Please Kingfish spare us from the NE Jackson secession harpy. It simply isn't happening.

Anonymous said...

Used to be you had to drive a few miles to come to Jackson for necessities and general shopping. Now it’s the other way around. A friend asked me to run by the store for cat food. WHAT STORE? They’ve closed, fallen into disrepair, become surrounded with blight, offer rancid meat or overpriced milk that’s good for two more days. I can’t just drop in the I-55 Kroger for one or two things. That’s a planned ordeal.

Then last brought a real whammy — I went to make a deposit at my Lakeland Drive bank branch. CLOSED. PERMANENTLY. As a of July 31.

Did the city really just budget a chunk of $$ to upgrade the Convention Center and restore the Planetarium? Does Chokwe even mention attracting business anymore?

There’s an eerie, dystopian cloud hovering over Jackson.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.

Jackson Jambalaya is the home of Trollfest '07. Catch this great event which promises to leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Sonjay Poontang and his band headline the night with a special steel cage, no time limit "loser must leave town" bout between Alan Lange and "Big Cat"Donna Ladd following afterwards. Kamikaze will perform his new song F*** Bush, he's still a _____. Did I mention there was no referee? Dr. Heddy Matthias and Lori Gregory will face off in the undercard dueling with dangling participles and other um, devices. Robbie Bell will perform Her two latest songs: My Best Friends are in the Media and Mama's, Don't Let Your Babies Grow up to be George Bell. Sid Salter of The Clarion-Ledger will host "Pin the Tail on the Trial Lawyer", sponsored by State Farm.

There will be a hugging booth where in exchange for your young son, Frank Melton will give you a loooong hug. Trollfest will have a dunking booth where Muhammed the terrorist will curse you to Allah as you try to hit a target that will drop him into a vat of pig grease. However, in the true spirit of Separate But Equal, Don Imus and someone from NE Jackson will also sit in the dunking booth for an equal amount of time. Tom Head will give a reading for two hours on why he can't figure out who the hell he is. Cliff Cargill will give lessons with his .80 caliber desert eagle, using Frank Melton photos as targets. Tackleberry will be on hand for an autograph session. KIM Waaaaaade will be passing out free titles and deeds to crackhouses formerly owned by The Wood Street Players.

If you get tired come relax at the Fox News Tent. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag.
