Outback Jackson Closing

McKinley Pierce, the owner of the Outback Steakhouse franchise on I-55N, posted the following message on Facebook: 

Due to certain circumstances as well as the current effects of Covid19. It comes with a heavy heart but the decision was made to close Outback Jackson and cease operations effective April 29th 2020. This has been my home for 12 years and i really had hopes and aspirations to make it the place of business i fell in love with all those years ago. I have met so many great people over the years, gained a wife and alot of friends and associates at this place. I fought and fought and fought some more but it just wasnt in the cards apparently.

All my staff ....we put up a fight and i was always optimistic from the day i took over we could turn things around and i thank you for all your hard work and time and dedication. I love you ladies and gents and i'm always here for you whatever i am able to do. Ive watched so many of you graduate, have babies, get married, and go on to other ventures and i.m glad i was able to see it all. Continue to thrive and make things happen. The hardest part about this is me feeling like i failed you guys. To all my managers thanks for the time, energy and support it didn't go unnoticed. To the community thank you for continued support and the opportunity to give back and partake in multiple things the past two years.

 I'm not sure what my next move will be but with the love and support of many and my family ill figure something out. 2510 I LOVE YOU GUYS. Ive tried to be a blessing to many and i hope some blessings find me soon!

Sorry to see him go. Took my girls there whenever we could. Needs to look at Madison since one in Flowood.

And so it begins, all around the nation! Every town and city is seeing this and from all reports its not going to improve.

Saw owner (10 locations)on TV last night said each of his locations budgets (rents utilities not coming down)had been set on full capacity any thing less than that would bankrupt his company.

Tried that Flowood location once. Totally sucked. Charred food, poor service. They offered free desserts but I'm not really about comps. I just want something good to eat. Last time I went to Jackson location about four years ago, well, the food was underwhelming and not as it once was.

The place was nearly always packed. Parking was a bear. How unfortunate for the city of Jackson to loose the tax revenues.

Maybe we can get a Waffle House there now.

I worked here and the Chili's on I-55. That area's customers try to hard to complain and get free meals. You can only give out so many free steak dinners for 4 before you fold. Lousy tippers too.

I used to eat there quite a bit in the ‘90s. Not so much lately since the retail shops and dining options have grown in Flowood and Madison. I’m sure the recent downturn pushed it over the edge, but that’s a declining area anyway. I’m sad but not surprised. Hope he can find a better opportunity in an area with a promising future.

Nor to us "over 60" folks. I've never been crazy about chain restaurants. I much prefer (and always have) locally owned establishments. This goes back to my childhood and my parents. Of course there were not too many chain restaurants back then.

Depends on the chain. J Alexander's is pretty good. One nice thing about some chains is you know at a minimum of what you are getting and they tend to be consistent. I think regional chains tend to be better than national chains, though.

Had to quit going there years ago because they kept the temperature near freezing. All the staff wore coats as did the prepared patrons. When we complained, the staff agreed that it was too cold, but did nothing about it. So we never went back. I'm surprised they lasted this long.

I moved to Jackson 5 years ago. I'm almost always disappointed with the food when I go to restaurants in the metro. But I feel obligated to say to everyone in a group that I enjoyed my meal. I hate being obligated to lie under social pressures.

Respect to anyone who decides to endure the ups and downs and strive for the successes of business ownership. He deserves a pat on the back, and if you ate his food or not, and if you liked it or not, his economic contribution to the community likely helped you /the people you love in some way. Big respect for Mr. Pierce. He took on a challenge that not many people would! I wish you the very best! Keep going and thank you!

Exactly KF. It depends on the chain. Unfortunately a large portion of the national chains have cut food quality over time. Outback, Red Lobster, Logan's, Olive Garden, and others of that tier of "casual dining" restaurants in general are nowhere near as good as they were 20 or even 10 years ago.

Some of it has to do with the quality of the ingredients. Beef, chicken, and pork have all fallen prey to selective breeding and mass-market farming that prizes fast growth to quality. Some of it has to do with the buyouts and corporate shenanigans that have burdened them with debt and consequently they have to micromanage every last dollar for low food cost.

There aren't many places left that give a consistently good experience without being exorbitantly priced.

J Alexander's is the best chain going in terms of price, quality and service. Too bad the Metro doesn't have one.

My Dad, who was a child of the Great Depression and member of the Greatest Generation, always referred to Outback Steakhouse as simply "Out House"....as in "Hey, let's go to Out House and get a steak for dinner."!

I agree, Mr. Pierce did go out like a man. He had the guts to get in the game instead of spending his entire life standing on the sidelines. What a classy farewell letter. You can tell this guy is a class act. Another door will open for this gentleman.

9:42 is correct. I stopped going to this location and to Chilli's at Briarwood when the same people as 9:42 mentioned were 85% of the patrons. I was embarrassed for the management and staff the way that so many were eating most or all of their meals then complaining about the food and wanting it comped. The waitstaff was hurt because these same people tipped either nothing or very little. If you plan to eat out you should not go to a restaurant if you can only afford, maybe, the mean and not tip the servers.

Mad respect for this gentleman. I wish I could give him an opportunity. I wish him well and wherever he lands, I hope KF keeps up because I will patronize that business as well. That I-55 corridor has gotten tough. Crime, customer base, etc.

Scrooges offered curbside service but last weekend shut it all down as well. It will supposedly reopen when restaurants can offer dine-in service.

I honestly can't see the majority of restaurants surviving this.
Chains, franchises or the locals.

After 50 plus years, (even before this), the "drive through" national chains screwed up over 35 percent of normal drive through orders.

At one point, my family and I had eaten pretty much everything on the menu. Once we moved to North Jackson in the early 2000s, Outback became a mainstay for us.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).


Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.


In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

Sid Salter of The Clarion-Ledger will host "Pin the Tail on the Trial Lawyer", sponsored by State Farm.

There will be a hugging booth where in exchange for your young son, Frank Melton will give you a loooong hug. Trollfest will have a dunking booth where Muhammed the terrorist will curse you to Allah as you try to hit a target that will drop him into a vat of pig grease. However, in the true spirit of Separate But Equal, Don Imus and someone from NE Jackson will also sit in the dunking booth for an equal amount of time. Tom Head will give a reading for two hours on why he can't figure out who the hell he is. Cliff Cargill will give lessons with his .80 caliber desert eagle, using Frank Melton photos as targets. Tackleberry will be on hand for an autograph session. KIM Waaaaaade will be passing out free titles and deeds to crackhouses formerly owned by The Wood Street Players.
