The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 234 new cases of the Wuhan Virus as well as 22 deaths today. The total number of cases is 9,908. The virus has caused 457 deaths. More information and a complete list of infected counties can be found at the MSDH website.
There are 208 nursing home deaths. Such deaths comprise 45% of overall Covid-19 deaths in Mississippi.
Meanwhile, the all important hospitalizations chart was a mixed-bag of news. Hospitalizations and ICU's increased while vents remained flat for four straight days. Further inspection reveals vents have stayed flat for nearly a month.

I can't make sense of these daily case numbers. Are we building back up from the weekend, or actually going down? Is Thurs or Fri gonna be another 400 type day? Followed by a misleading couple days?
My county, Union, has seen cases go from 20 or so to 50+ in the last couple weeks. What's the scoop on this? Not asking for names, but who are they and what are their stories? And is anything being done to contain the local outbreak?
Can you imagine a world where journalists, both local and national, are adequately funded? If only Union had a Kingfish.
Can you imagine a world where journalists, both local and national, are adequately funded?
Adequately funded?
Can anyone confirm or refute that hospitals are receiving extra funding to declare a patient COVID-19 positive, as well as receiving extra incentives to hospitalize patients?
If our freedom is linked to these daily numbers coming out, then we are doomed.
12:07- That was poor wording on my part. I mean wouldn’t it be nice if the market adequately supported good journalism at all levels. The Daily Journal out of Tupelo is now a corporate owned piece of garbage that just reports official pronouncements. They do little to no actual reporting.
@12:00p- Exactly WHO should adequately fund your news? Your socialistic/communistic roots are showing...
Personally, I prefer independent, unbiased reporting.
12:09, are you suggesting hospitals get paid to treat sick people. Hold the presses, you just broke this whole thing wide open.
The Woodlands in Clinton has about 50 cases. 50 patients. Who have not had visitors in 2 months. Either something is terrible wrong, or the employees are spreading it. If someone is in hospice and is diagnosed AFTER entering, how is that counted? Are cancer and heart attack deaths falling? What is 'average' daily death count in Mississippi on a Tuesday?
How much protection does a mask provide when worn on one's chin, or just looped over one ear?
Could we get testing results broken down by actual date of the test, and actual date of death?
12:09, if they are not, they should be. Hospitals are reimbursed by Medicare and insurance for their costs in treating patients. If a patient is COVID positive, the hospital incurs more costs because more safety and sanitation must be taken. In addition, it’s not like constantly running ventilators is without costs too.
So yes, more than likely, hospitals receive extra funding when they incur the extra expense of caring for COVID patients. But it’s not because ThEy ArE TrYiNg tO TaKe uR fReEdUm in some conspiracy between the liberals, China, and Bill Gates that Trump is somehow complicit with.
12:00pm, you ask a good question. Daily numbers are too volatile to draw any conclusions from. As you know a 200 day could be followed by a 400 day. Instead, wait until you see a 2 week flattening in the graph that KF sometimes posts. Right now that graph has done nothing but go up since this all started, and the slope of that graph has not lessened either.
Our "freedom" is not linked to normal or enhanced health insurance and Medicare/Medicaid reimbursements, Hoss. If anything, we better hope hospitals are getting some kind of payment. This is another Tea Party type conspiracy meme.
It came up in mid April on Ingraham, suggested by a GOP Tea Party legislator. Dr. Scott Jensen. Since then, the RWNJs have taken it to a new level. Jensen has been called out, and partially retracted his statement (Well, quibbled on it and waffled, but that's MO)
Here's the not so simplistic answer: They are not simply getting EXTRA funding. That's a conspiracy. They ARE getting reimbursements, just like anytime someone goes to the hospital, and it depends on whether they have Medicare, etc.
https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/medicare-hospitals-covid-patients/
It's rated a MIXTURE, because, yes, hospitals get paid for sick patients by Medicare and those are the normal rates, not inflated.
As I posted a dozen times, "letting her rip" with massive hospitalizations not only costs lives and suffering but taxpayers. Only fools propose that.
But posting this type of "concern" troll (but, I heard, and there's a picture on the Internet, saying Big Bad Hospitals are "GETTING RICH" off Covid"...), are why a lot of us are calling out the conspiracy theory posts (comments) on this website in part. KF at least entertains our malcontent responses, and that's gracious.
Because conspiracy theories ALWAYS have a little bit of truth, and then......
"The figures cited by Jensen generally square with estimated Medicare payments for COVID-19 hospitalizations, based on average Medicare payments for patients with similar diagnoses."
Ask FactCheck reporter Angelo Fichera, who interviewed Jensen, noted, "Jensen said he did not think that hospitals were intentionally misclassifying cases for financial reasons. But that’s how his comments have been widely interpreted and paraded on social media."
So, normal range of payments. Because there is a 20% premium POSSIBLE (under law) (incentives as Tea Party guys like to call their GubMint grants), there is an "avenue" for a little more money. But, the Tea Party took that remote possibility and ran with the conspiracy theory.
And, here we have it. Again.
Another fact check: linkhttps://www.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2020/04/24/fact-check-medicare-hospitals-paid-more-covid-19-patients-coronavirus/3000638001/
It would help if MSDH would actually update the whole page at once instead of a few stats here and there.
The Tea Party harpy needs to get tested. Not for the Wuhan virus but for mental insanity.
What was that purple haze floating around in the background on CNN during the Senate hearings today? I can't tell if it is a big corona virus peeking over the top of the video frame or Jimi Hendrix revisiting. One is as likely as the other these days. LOL
Yall stay the course and stay safe!
12:00 pm, Yes, I can imagine what that looked like. During the 30's and 40s, the German government ensured that newspapers and radio was adequately funded.
Although the Jews didn't like it, but not many people protested it.
@1244. If they are in hospice, but get Covid 19 after the fact, that becomes a Covid "case", and their case will close when they either fully recover or they die, which ever comes first.
@12:09
yes, hosptials get the addtional money.
https://www.factcheck.org/2020/04/hospital-payments-and-the-covid-19-death-count/
and this is a left wing publication reporting that.
@May 12, 2020 at 12:43 PM
I don't think there is any question about the virus spreading at hospitals.
FACT: Hospitals are getting EXACTLY what they were promised. They are also getting this:
The bipartisan CARES Act and the Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act provided $175 billion in relief funds to hospitals and other healthcare providers on the front lines of the coronavirus response.
The payments from the $12 billion COVID-19 High-Impact Allocation are being distributed by the Department of Health and Human Services through the Health Resources and Services Administration to 395 hospitals who provided inpatient care for 100 or more COVID-19 patients through April 10, 2020. $2 billion of these payments was distributed to these hospitals based on their Medicare disproportionate share and uncompensated care payments.
These 395 hospitals accounted for 71 percent of COVID-19 inpatient admissions reported to HHS from nearly 6,000 hospitals around the country."
Read that part about "disproportionate" and "uncompensated" again before anyone spreads more Covid conspiracy theory. About all it lacks is a more blatant tie to the "Rothschilds" or something.
No, hospitals are not lying on Covid to "make more money." They all are barely surviving. And we need them to survive so we can survive.
PittPanther and many others keep using the misnomer-phrase 'flattening the curve'. No curve is 'flat' until there is no increase and no continued growth. Flattening actually would be a perfectly parallel line. We have not seen anything close to that and won't....for at least 8 more months.
Maybe these self-anointed experts ought to become familiar with the notion of 'a decrease in the rate of continued escalation'. That's not flattening. Call it what it is....a numerical decrease in escalation over time. Nothing 'flat' about it.
One has to love the grammar Karens making themselves look foolish.
Look, Karen Misnomer, the phrase "flattening the curve" is appropriate and is appropriately used in this context.
Flattening = "to make flatter". There is no requirement need to be met where COMPLETELY flat is achieved in order to employ the use of the term "flattening."
Huge drop in hospitalizations yesterday followed by a huge increase today right back to where we were. My spider sense tells me some hospital was left off yesterday's numbers. ICU patients are up and vent usage is up. We haven't reached the peak yet. Other areas are seeing some containment of the virus, but not us. Keep at it guys, you're doing a tremendous job in ensuring as many people die as possible.
Well, after watching the Senate Hearing earlier today, many who crave closet life and being locked down may get their wish. The experts have spoken and I'm sure it will lead to more panic and as some will say, reasoning, to avoid future deaths and lead us to Utopia. I do fear this will, if it occurs, not be accepted well amongst others. I also fear that in attempting to eradicate something that can't be eradicated, others will suffer from other malady's as we will solely focus on Covid. Maybe this is indeed the end times for humans so a new breed of mankind will emerge after the dust settles. Some sarcasm and irreverence meant.
@4:55
To be clear, I didn't accuse anyone of lying, let alone hospital staff or doctors. Yes, the hospitals are getting more money for treating wuflu patients. Yes, we do want our hospitals to stay in business and be paid fairly. Yes, that extra was laid out in CARES legislation. But you do see that the magic number of 100 patients would create some incentive to reach it and trigger those additional funds.
Wash your hands and take care.
Every positive Covid case is confirmed by the CDC.
The hospitals can't fudge that number.
2:54pm, May 12th
You inferred that factcheck would support your position...trusting I suppose that no one would go to the site to see if you are telling the truth.
You either are a liar or can't read.
FACTCHECK:" Recent legislation pays hospitals higher rates for Covid-19 patients and treatment, but there is no evidence of fraudulent reporting."
And, if you bothered to be informed before forming an opinion, you'd discover that hospitals are having to spend more on the PPEs, other supplies and equipment to treat CV19 patients. In other words, dummy, these patients are far more costly to the hospital than the usual ICU patient. That is why both the House and Senate supported the " new legislation".
I wish MDHS would report a week or two weeks along with the daily report.
I would like to know when we get 14 days of fewer cases.
We clearly have not even reached a plateau and certainly haven't come close to the 14 day decline recommended by CDC.
It was always a certainty that when we started, we didn't know how many CV19 cases we had. Now we are still only tracking the symptomatic and still NOT identifying the contagious who have zero or mild symptoms. The notion that more tests result in more cases is a really, really stupid argument for claiming our situation has improved! We are simply discovering that it was worse than we wanted then or now to believe.
The ONLY improvement is our ability to identify and treat earlier and an increase in the supplies needed by the medical community to do so.
Unfortunately, those of you who don't understand viruses or statistics are preventing those of us who do from getting to go out and about safely.
I could if you could measure 6' and remember what that distance is and would wear a mask. Your fire arm doesn't make me feel safer when you are too dumb to wear a mask to protect yourself and obviously don't give a rat's ass about harming others.
@2:54
I posted the link, hoping that people would read it.
I am not a liar, although i have told some lies in my day.
I can read, it's fundamental.
My position is that yes, in response to the questioner above, hospitals are getting paid extra for Wuflu cases, which was laid out in the CARES legislation.
Quoting myself above: " Yes, the hospitals are getting more money for treating wuflu patients. Yes, we do want our hospitals to stay in business and be paid fairly. Yes, that extra was laid out in CARES legislation. "
Yes, the link i posted (https://www.factcheck.org/2020/04/hospital-payments-and-the-covid-19-death-count/) points out (rightly) that we would expect that hospitals should be paid more, due to the increased cost associated.
However, I also said that this additional payment creates an incentive for hospitals to overstate the number of cases. While most people at hospitals are honest, God-fearing people, human nature is such that some will be tempted, and some will in fact cheat, in order to get their hands on the additional money. We don't have to wait long for many examples of that happening.
You might want to back off your intake of clorox there big fella.
