His opponent got more votes.
Now maybe his thug he was protecting can put him on his payroll
Colonel Reb is crying tonight.
Don’t feel sorry for him. He can easily retire to his hick town and defend duis.
Lots of JJ readers in Lowndes County apparently.....
Lowndes County voters voter against both Jeff Smith and Corky Smith (father and son) Jeff will no longer be Chairman of Ways and Means in the House and Corky will not be County Attorney. Maybe the two of them can Clark family (DBA Butler Snow) Jeff - you and Corky need to be careful in Caledonia - every time you walk down the sidewalk, remember that every other person you pass voted against your candidate for Mayor - who won by one vote. It's about time for new leadership from Columbus in the House!
You’d be surprised
The law of averages and arrogance catch em all....eventually.
Thankful for small victories on an otherwise dark night.
Is Smith the half brother of Ricky Cole? They both pretend to be fictional characters out of a Mark Twain novel. Or either characters in some of Jerry Clower's jokes. Just think how entertaining Steve Holland would have been with that mustache. I knew he was missing something.
If Jeff Smith did not support a wife beater and tell the folks in Lowndes County they were stuck with him, he might have been re-elected. Corky, on the other hand, has been campaigning for the last two years. With the two of them involved in the Caledonia Mayor'd race really hurt them. They should have stayed out of other people's races! Jeff - are you going to wear your spats today, along with your cane?
Every undertaker in the legislature ought to have a black mustache and wear a black suit with black fedora. And white socks. And be a cornball.
Now, maybe he can pay for his own food and whiskey!!!
I guess they finally had enough (how long did this take?), conscience of the electorate is often the downfall of politicians. I'm sure Smith will make a fine living defending wife beaters, drunk drivers and peddling his access to his former colleagues.
JS was once caught knowingly complicit in trying to defraud the state of some funds for one of his local public entity clients, but nothing ever came of it. Good riddance. Another big politician/lawyer that did essentially the same thing is a former congressman with the initials WD. He got fired but not punished or disbarred.
Big upset in Lauderdale County too. House pro-tem Snowden upset. Big leadership changes coming in House.
The more incumbent legislators that are defeated, the better.
I believe Jeff Smith's opponent got a major endorsement from one of the education groups. So, this may be a precursor to other races in the state and the education vote.
No Smith and no Snowden and no Burton?
Who will Phil Gunn have to carry out his wishes?
Are Robert Foster and Mark Baker still in the House?
@4:55 AM: Both Foster and Baker ran for statewide office so they couldn't also stand for re-election.
You should have seen Lowndes county Circuit Clerk Terese Barksdale.
She was holding her head in her hands when the results starting coming in to the court house. She could not believe that both Jeff and Corky were losing their races. Teresa, you need to not be so obvious to the general public who you were supporting. Maybe you are next one to go down in Lowndes county. Look out four years from now.
Smith was opposed to a local/private Columbus tax for their convention center. They didn't have a convention center for a year because of it.
Maybe now, we can have wine sold in grocery stores or shipped to our houses. Unless the Thompson’s can convince the next Ways & Means chairman to also kill it every year to protect their sister’s wine store.
