Pelahatchie shut down yet again last week. WLBT reported Friday:
At least five employees with the town of Pelahatchie won’t be paid Friday because Mayor Ryshonda Beechem has refused to sign their paychecks, Mayor Pro Tempore Margie Warren tells 3 On Your Side.
Those affected include the town clerk, a police officer, and other personnel who do not utilize direct deposit, including Beechem herself, according to Warren.
Warren said those paychecks can only be cashed with two signatures -- hers and Beechem’s.
Beechem declined to comment, instead referring questions about the issue to her attorney, Thomas Bellinder.
Bellinder said the mayor has been advised not to sign anything involving checks, loans or notes because of past financial issues and alleged violations of law by the board.
“She has informed the Board that per her understanding, the Mayor Pro Tem (sic) or other board members can sign the payroll checks,” Bellinder wrote in an email response.
At a regular board meeting Monday night, aldermen unanimously approved a measure to authorize three aldermen to be able to sign checks or warrants approved by the board “where the mayor is unavailable or unable to sign the checks/warrants.”
Beechem did not attend the meeting, saying she wasn’t feeling well on her Facebook page.
That measure cannot be recognized by the bank in question until approved minutes of the board’s actions are provided to the financial institution, Warren said.
Minutes are typically approved at the next board meeting, which would be September, leaving those employees relying on paper checks without pay until then.
Because of that looming delay, aldermen called a special meeting Thursday night to accept the minutes from Monday’s meeting.
Warren said the process takes three days and includes paperwork that must be filed by aldermen with the bank, meaning it could be Tuesday before those employees get their paychecks.
Mr. Bellender said the Mayor is bonded.

As a resident of Pelahatchie, this is pretty embarrassing, I do not know what this ladies end game is but she is hurting this town and its reputation as a good place to live. Maybe that is her goal. Leadership in this community has a lot to answer for and I do not believe it is entirely her fault. Everything I typed is probably an understatement, but as a reader of this blog, I have wanted to say something, shake my head just to express some wonderment at the jacked up way things are in town right now.
Before the Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity crowd jumps in here and rants about Democratic-managed hell-hole cities and towns, let not forget the fact that almost all the states and rural areas with the most poverty, poorest education, worst health issues, most polluted environments, highest numbers on government support, and highest per capita federal assistance relative to federal taxes paid into the treasury are RED states -- almost all governed by Republican governors and state government.
Those are FACTS, not opinions.
Screwed up as a soup sandwich.
Not showing up to meetings, and not signing pay checks, she has pretty much justified her pay decrease the board voted on. If I were a betting man, I bet payroll checks aren't the only thing she hasn't paid. *wink wink*. Water bills in her own name and other bills for the city.
Yes 10:02, cities like Detroit, Flynt, Philly, etc. All Red State Republican leaders. Got it!
9:58, her goal is to run the town into the ground. She has said so, to avenge the firing of her aunt who got caught embezzling money from the police dept but was allowed to leave peacefully. See what the town gets for trying to be nice.
Didn't the board cut the Mayor's pay out of spite? I wouldn't sign any checks either until they restored my pay.
Those are FACTS, not opinions.
Prove it.
10:13. it’s Flint, not Flynt. Thats the spelling of the publisher of Hustler magazine.
10:40 - all you have to do is a little research. Don't believe me, look it up yourself. The first three have been well documented over the years, at least for Mississippi, on this very blog with sources cited. The Republicans are in denial that they are indeed part of the problem.
You made the claim pal. You support it with links. The onus is on YOU. Short of that you're just sharing your opinion, NOT facts.
@10:02... Yes, the Red States are poor and rely on federal dollars. Pretty much everyone knows this.
However, I will add that most, if not all, of the suburbs in "blue" states also vote republican. If you look at it from a socioeconomic point of view... The middle class half of America typically votes Republican. The 25% very poor and the 25% very rich typically vote Democrat.
Why do you think that is? The rich get richer by paying politicians and influencing elections. Just look at the MS delta or even Detroit, Baltimore, any big city. The only reason rich people vote democrat is because they want to keep their power and poor people/immigrants/minorities can be easily bought.
KF, You done stirred up the embroiled Pelahatchie mess again. And, it just too darn HOT to do this.
That's funny, another JJ blowhard who wants everyone to load up the blog with links so he doesn't have to verify anything himself. I bet even if the poster provides links, the blowhards mind is already made up!
The troll 10:02/11:25 jumped in to highjack the thread for AOC & Co... Discussion wasn't gonna go in that direction and they knew it. Shear dumba$$.
Something is fishy. Mayor why want you pay tour employees? It looks like there is something missing. What you got to hide Mayor? Maybe its that you don't even live in this town. She couldn't even pay her own water bills. She has run off good employess to just get revenge for her mother. But mayor you cannot hide wrong. The mayor keeps saying God's got this. Can I tell you something. Yes he does.He knows the truth and so do you. As the mayor says RIGHT IS RIGHT and WRONG IS WRONG. The truth will come out one day and its not going to be pretty. You can only live a lie so long
So, this seems like a good time to sign up for direct deposit.
Let’s examine this Red State Vs Blue State issue you’ve got going here: Mississippi for example. Statistically speaking, the Red state of MS maybe be poorer, less uneducated & fatter than some other states. But it is nowhere near appropriate to place blame for that on the political preferences of the population as a whole. MOST people in MS are middle income, reasonable well educated people who partake of a reasonable well balanced diet. And, obviously, since we are a RED state, most of us prefer a conservative governmental structure. That’s why we are a Red State.
But, then, there is “everybody else”: the unmarried high-school drop-outs who have birthed at least 3 kids before age 20 and whose main physical activity is strolling the aisles of Walmart while screaming at and slapping the aforementioned kids...THESE are the people who feed at the government trough. THESE are the people taking the government handouts. It’s NOT the hard working, middle class people who are voting republican!! It’s the porch sitters and street corner loiters......ALL of whom vote Democrat!!! It’s not Republican’s fault that we have a greater percentage of these people than some other states. Further, it’s probably not going to be too long before they and their offspring start to outnumber the rest of us. Then the state will be deep blue. Who are you going to blame THEN???
@ 2:30 that means the Mayor would have to have a bank account. Pretty sorry when the Mayor of the town doesn’t have a bank account with either local bank. Talk about a good ole boy system, pretty sad when the banks won’t give their own mayor a banking account. Yet supposedly she’s an accountant and has bankrupt several daycares along with the town of Pelahatchie.....what a leader
Hey, 2:30, when one is a deadbeat Mayor who uses other people's credit without their permission and you find yourself on the losing end of a debt collection lawsuit, one avoids placing money in legitimate banking institutions for fear that one's account will be garnished.
@10:02 - PREACH THE TRUTH, BROTHER... !
8:34 I think garnishment is withheld by the employer not the bank.
2:27 You need to think some more.
That probably wouldn’t help. Ask someone.

Not all African Americans are Democrats and not all Democrats are African Americans.
