Just awful.

I lived about a mile from there in the Heatherwood area. These stories are why we left to Madison county. It wasn't worth my family's safety to reduce my commute by 5-10 minutes.

Save your time looking for a nice apartment to rent in Madison. We don't 'low nunna that up in here. Ridgeland is the apartment capitol of central Mississippi. And then there's Jackson.

But, back to the scene of the crime...not sure how the apartment management team can be held responsible when somebody follows a group of women into their unit. He probably lives in the next building over.

9:23; The problem has nothing to do with Madison County. It's a way of life in apartment complexes nowadays. A large percentage of the apartment renting crowd belong to the 'take what you want' mentality.

The problem is not GEOgraphic. It's DEMOgraphic.

first: let's hope the thugs are put down like animals by JPD. They don't deserve a trial after brutally raping a woman.

second: just because someone does not have a lot of money to rent an apartment does NOT mean they deserve to be raped because they live on 'that side of town'. living on a lower middle class income OR even welfare should not necessarily mean living in constant fear of rape or murder.

third: all that being said, it's true that living on 'that side of town' will put you in danger of being raped or murdered. MOVE! move to smaller towns with far less crime and affordable rents. Mississippi is full of them.

fourth: or another novel idea: actually keep criminals in prison for full terms. support social programs such as big brothers/big sisters that mentor the youth in positive lifestyles. not everyone will be an architect, but some people can put pride in working at a mini mart. as long as someone isn't a thug-we should be encouraging and just not whine about 'them' vs 'us'

Last month, there was some idiot on the "officer shot" thread talking about how safe and popular this apartment complex was.

This can't be. Just last night I saw on WLBT Lee Vance talking about how crime was down across the city.

The description of the assailant is curioulsy lacking an important detail. I'm amazed at the number of people who are more afraid of being thought a racist than they are of being raped, robbed, or murdered.

10:31, It is one thing to be the victim of a crime. If you describe the criminal you open yourself up to all of their friends, family, and race. It is sad when things have gotten that bad.

There's a review of these apartments on Google from three weeks ago that describes the exact same behavior for robbery (no rape). Seems like this isn't the first time this guy has struck. JPD needs to get on this.

No matter the topic, the Madison folks love to hate on Jackson. Hate to break it to ya, but Madison ain't nothing special. It's a pasture with cookie cutter houses. So get over yourself.

Vance, Yarber and Foote pressure officers to under classify, under report or not report crimes especially in precinct four. Most crimes that wind up getting officially reported are classified as property crimes rather than violent crimes.

I've lived in Madison my entire life. I've never heard of anything like this. Madison might not be anything special, but that doesn't detract from the fact that Jackson is more dangerous than most third world countries. There's certainly nothing special about that dump.

It's getting harder and harder to have any sympathy for the many victims of Jackson crime. There's no way these people didn't know that Jackson is not a safe place to live. Like too many others, they just put blinders on and refuse to believe that Jackson is as unsafe as it is. It's beginning to be a reap what you sow type of thing.

In the rare event that someone that cares about their family enough to live in a safe area, but is still a victim, then I have sympathy for them.

Potholes, water issues, crime, etc. All of this, and I seriously still would rather live in Jackson than any of the "suburbs" around here. Regardless of what the Jackson-haters say, I still enjoy living, working, and shopping in Jackson. I know that really gets under your skin.

Does anyone else think this story just doesn't add up? Made them lay under blankets? locking them in the bathroom? How do you lock someone in the bathroom from the outside? If he withdrew all his money wouldn't they have a photo of this guy by now? 6:42, A person should live where they enjoy living. Some like to live in a quite safe place. Some like to live in a ghetto cesspool. Different people, different tastes.

I'm a JA parent. We don't live in Jackson but we wanted our kids to have a good education so we toured several schools and decided that JA was the best option for us. We love the school. I feel like my kids are getting a wonderful education.

But it's just getting awful around that whole area. I don't like being down there after dark. I don't want my kids driving by themselves anywhere near there after 5. I am really questioning our long term commitment to the school. It's sad because my kids love it. And other then the location, we love it too. But I just feel like it's only a matter of time before something happens to someone at the school.

@7:22 they do have a pic of the guy from the atm machine. He threatened to come back and kill them if their atm cards didn't work. They stayed under the blankets bc he said he would kill the one he raped if they moved. They were legit scared for their lives.

Youngest then Sophomore daughter robbed at gunpoint 35-40 minutes after a football game along with group other JA students a few doors down from Judge Waller's Sheffield house in 2008. All three gun toting suspects ran, then exited out the passway area east of the Judge's house to Wilhurst Street. Love, LOVE, JA, a really wonderful school and loving faculty but the campus location has become a major liability.

That is why a victim gave several interviews to the media and posted his experience on Facebook. Of course, facts seem to consistently escape Mr. H. He sees this site as a bigger threat than someone who might stick a gun in his face and pull the trigger.

There is no place for any of you to assume you are safe from something like this. When you choose to be defenseless, you also choose the consequences.

Get professional training. Get a gun and an IC carry permit, then use them. Go to the range and practice. Regularly.

If you are female, you are a target. You have things thugs want (money, sex, valuables) and you are assumed to be defenseless, or very close to it. If you do have a weapon, it's probably in your purse, which is the first thing the thug will grab when he slips up behind you. Wear your gun on your person, under your clothes. It may save your life, or the life of someone you love.

I lived in Flowood. I now live in Jackson. I don't lie to myself about my safety in either place. There are no guarantees.

I was shopping at Bed, Bath, & Beyond at Dogwood on a beautiful sunny afternoon one day in the not too distant past. An hour later, another female shopper in precisely the same place I'd just been was kidnapped and subjected to one of the most brutal rapes I can recall hearing of.

The only person who is sure to be there when you need them is YOU. Make your choices accordingly.

And not a word from Ashby Foote. He has been an incredible disappointment. I definitely won't be voting for him next go around.

Actually, it's just Zinfandel. And it's more like constant "irritation." The rest is pretty close. At least for me.

One of my sons was held up at gunpoint in Fondren and robbed. He was again assaulted after a break-in in Fondren. He moved back home to Brandon where our cars were broken into and his audio equipment was stolen.

When we lived near JA and my children went to school there, we had not one problem and my kids could walk home from school.

When we lived in NE Jackson a bit farther from JA we had not one problem.

It's not where you live, it's who is in your neighborhood.

Why would a criminal drive to Jackson? I forgot, it is a safe haven for criminals. Reach the city limits and you are free.
