Madison-Rankin Counties' District Attorney Michael Guest issued the following press release:
18 Year
Old Gang Member Convicted in Canton Murder
Madison and Rankin Counties’ District Attorney
Michael Guest announced today that Fredrick Tyrone Smith, Jr. pled guilty in
Madison County to second degree murder and was sentenced to serve forty years
in the shooting death of James Ricks.
On January 21, 2014, the Canton
Police Department received a 911 call about an individual being shot at a home
on Canal Street. When officers arrived
at the residence they discovered the victim, James Ricks, lying in the rear
bedroom after having been shot once in the torso. Medical personnel began life saving measures
in an effort to revive the victim but they were unsuccessful and Ricks died as
a result of his injuries.
The
Canton Police Department interviewed the homeowner who was present at the time
of the shooting. Police learned that
Smith and the victim had an argument over a computer. During the argument Smith pulled a small
caliber handgun and shot Ricks. Smith
then fled the scene on foot.
Police
and members of the Madison County Sheriff’s Department went to Smith’s
residence. Police surrounded the home
and were able get Smith to come out of the house and he was taken into
custody. Smith was taken to the Canton
Police Department where he was advised of his rights and he agreed to give a
statement. Smith admitted to police that
he shot Ricks during an argument. Smith
also admitted to being a member of the four corner hustlers street gang.
Canton
Police performed a gunshot residue collection of Smith’s hands. The gunshot collection kit was submitted to
the Mississippi State Crime Laboratory and they were able to identify gunshot residue
on Smith’s left hand.
Guest stated, “This was a senseless
killing that resulted because of an argument over the use of a computer. We sometimes forget that human live is
precious and once a decision is made to take the life of another that decision
can never be undone.”
Guest added, “At the time of the
shooting, Smith was a 17 year old gang member who walked the streets of Canton
carrying a gun. Smith is a dangerous
young man who showed no remorse after shooting another individual. The citizens of Madison County are safer and
they should sleep better at night knowing that Smith will serve the next 40
years behind bars.”
Guest concluded, “The Canton Police
Department and the Mississippi State Crime Laboratory did an outstanding job of
investigating this case and obtaining the evidence we needed to prosecute and
convict Smith. Their hard work has
helped remove a killer from our streets.”
District Attorney Michael Guest was
sworn into office in January 2008 and represents the Twentieth Judicial
District, Madison and Rankin Counties.

So Guy #1 didn't want Guy #2 to use his computer to check Facebook, so Guy #2 thought the proper response was to murder him?
Its not about culture, its not about black/white, its about the condition of someone's thoughts that believed that this was a proper response.
Not so fast, 11:16. You're not digging deep enough. What you suggest places you at only the third level down. Dig deeper. You're looking no deeper than symptoms.
18 years old (19 in December) and he will spend the next FORTY years of his life behind bars... WAKE UP YOUNG PEOPLE!
So, 60 years for having 10 pounds of weed with intent to sell it to dope head idiots. 40 years for killing someone. Brilliant.
As a police officer who once worked at Canton P. D. I can tell you that The city of canton is an awful place. The mayors office does not let the media know of the stuff that goes on there. They do their best to hide all the crime so businesses will want to come there. The drugs guns robberies and the list goes on is the same as Jackson.
THANK YOU DA Guest!! We appreciate your hard work for Madison and Rankin Counties!! Keep up the good work, and PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE run for Attorney General one day!!
Buries the lede. What about the computer was the subject of argument? Ownership? An e-mail? Use of Comic Sans as default font?
11:16, I think you missed the point: It's ONLY about culture....think about the American cultures in which this is not an unexpected or surprising response.
How many are you coming up with?
Sounds a lot like manslaughter to me, but what do I know?
Does anybody else know why it's important for Guest to point out that this kid is a member of a gang? Did it have anything to do with the second-degree murder? Or, is it more about making sure we know that he puts the black people away?
Thank you Michael. Good job by all agencies involved.
7:49, it is not about black, it is about criminal. You need to pull your head out of your behind and look at what too many the young people of the black race have become. Criminal thugs, who have no respect for anyone or anything and racist people with the (it is because they are black) mind set like you have made them that way.
So, did Canton pass the increased school bond bill so taxpayers can pay to give every kid his own computer? Is this what they had in mind?
