The Jackson Free Press endorsed Chokwe Lumumba, Jr. for Mayor today. Some excerpts:
Looking back, we realized that this endorsement represents the first time we have ever endorsed a candidate for Jackson mayor other than former Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr.....
When we interviewed Chokwe Antar Lumumba, we were struck by two strong themes. One, Mr. Lumumba appears to have been raised from an early age to appreciate and model his father's approach to leadership and decision-making. While only 31 years old, he exudes a discipline and quiet determination that people many years his senior haven't mastered. His articulation of a framework for a "unity, debate, unity" style of governance is something we appreciated.
Second, Mr. Lumumba clearly communicated differences with his father and a strong willingness to make his own decisions if he's elected mayor. He does represent a new generation of leadership—one firmly rooted in and respectful of tradition—and he affirms he will be his "own man" as mayor.
Most importantly, Mr. Lumumba has promised that he is committed to continuing his father's work in transforming Jackson for all of its citizens. After careful consideration—and recognizing that there is risk in any choice—we'd like to give him that chance. And if the citizens of Jackson agree, the JFP promises to watchdog closely to make sure he keeps that commitment.
Vote Chokwe Antar Lumumba on April 8, 2014. Rest of editorial

Gee, imagine that....
Wow! I'm so surprised! Insert *sarcasm*
"JFP promises to watchdog closely to make sure he keeps that commitment." Because we all know how savagely they went after Harvey. *roll eyes* *facepalm* What a freakin' joke... the statement, the "paper", and its staff.
I just KNEW they were going to endorse Harvey Johnson, as they ALWAYS HAVE. Major shocker for me. *no sarcasm*.
This city is dead, dead, dead!!
This would be an appropriate time for the yawn and snore guy to comment........
Who cares? Other than Donner and a few groupies, does this really make a difference?
Yawn.
Donner's endorsement will be long forgotten by tomorrow morning because she simply has no influence in Jackson politics.
Free the Land Motha F***as!!!
And this people is why I am leaving the state all together. It is things like this that just let's everybody know that even the Capital city is full of idiots.
Why leave the city, much less the state? This is about as important as the guy with the cardboard sign, on 55, near the Hilton, proclaiming his candidate preference.
Bennie's new commercial, which I just heard on WAPT, he says "Melvin has demonstrated in his short time on the council that he is the perfect man for the job". I wonder what he means by that.
What is the JFP ????
Sorry, I've only lived her 52 years.
Never heard of it.
Jackson has a terrible problem. But 'this" (or any other code word for black people) is not it. The problem is the decaying infrastructure.
It's bad. It's getting worse in a hurry. The roads are the horror. There's no money to pave most of the roads. No one seems to have a clue on the best way to spend the money they do have. Rather than fix Fortification or Capital or West quickly, they tear them all up at the same time and leave them torn up for years. Meanwhile traffic is forced onto other roads, which tears them up sooner.
Walk around the neighborhood after a rain and it smells like raw sewage becuase, for some reason, the sewage system overflows everytime it rains.
Everywhere you drive you see infrastruture that is terminal and dying fast.
If they don't get a handle on it the next wave of people to leave Jackson will not leave because of "this." It will be people--black and white--who are sick of the road and sewage problems.
Now all we need is for Jerry Mitchell to endorse someone.
9:04. The bond issue passed by over 90% EYRNHO.
Earlier this evening I saw a TV report that Myrlie Evers is not endorsing John Horne for Mayor. In fact, she is not endorsing any candidate.
Good to hear. I was surprised at the earlier news that had her endorsing Horne. I think she is a good and wise woman.
But, I do wonder how that earlier erroneous news re the Horne endorsement got started in the first place.
As far as the JFP endorsement of the coat-tail riding Antar. LOL
10:05 trumpets 'the bond issue'. In a village which with each passing week becomes more and more commerce-retarded, the bond issue is going to solve the problems. Wait for it.
I don't know why but I was thinking this scene when the JFP went and endorsed anyone.
Last night's debate had all the makings of an SNL skit.
