Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens issued the following statement.
Hinds County District Attorney Jody E. Owens, II, announced Monday that Michael Jamal Owens has been found guilty on all charges related to the murder of his wife, 36-year-old Ebony Owens, and the subsequent arson used to cover up the crime. On March 15, 2023, Michael Owens fatally shot his wife, Ebony Owens, in the head inside their Edwards home. He then wrapped her body in a blanket, placed it in the backseat of her own vehicle, and drove to a remote area on Old Highway 80. At the bridge over the Big Black River, Owens threw Ebony’s body into the water. In an attempt to conceal his crime, Owens set fire to Ebony’s white 2015 Acura, along with the blanket and clothing used during the murder, on the roadside near the river. He also removed the car’s license plate and discarded it in a wooded area nearby. Ebony’s body was recovered on March 25, 2023. After trial, a jury returned a guilty verdict on all counts against Owens: First-Degree Murder and Arson. Owens now faces a mandatory life sentence to be served under the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections. “This was not just a murder, it was an execution followed by the disgraceful cover-up of throwing Ebony Owens into the river as if she were disposable,” said District Attorney Owens. “Hinds County will not tolerate such acts of violence, and my office will continue to prioritize seeking justice for victims and holding offenders accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”Note: Owens got life in prison for the murder of his wife and a three-year prison sentence for arson.

Unless it's life without parole, it just means a minimum of 25 years. Only a few states keep track of " lifers" re-offending. The states put the burden on parole boards who are political appointees. In Mississippi, our Governor appoints 5 members . One chairs the board.
